Need a better angle but it appears to be the old crosscheck/punch to the back of the head. The only difference between that and a Sucker punch (al la Bertuzzi) is that he didn't remove his hand from the stick. (Action not result)

It's a whether fine, simmonds could have gotten same for his 5k slash/spear at the end of the third.

These type of plays happen frequently enough and best way is to call a penalty when caught vs fining these guys 5k which is like 20$ to them

LOL

And Scab fans complain about non-calls on the Leafs

Habs D is based on non-stop interference and using the stick as a weapon to intimidate and maim

Garbage team that is kept afloat by the league's refusal to enforce its rulebook

Weber gets away with this way too much. The guy is a neanderthal and it is players like him that ruin the game. He was a talented D Man and has a great shot, but, he's playing the game in a time capsule.

So, what is a $5000 to deter him from doing it again? How about an instant 1 or 2 game suspension during the playoffs for violent hits that kids shouldn't be watching on T.V? That might ensure a player considers the consequences. Hell, he'd trade $5000 fines to wear down and injure the opponent in a playoff series every day of the week.

IMO cross checking has been out of hands this playoffs. I love hard physical intense playoff hockey, but cross checking a guy in the back is gutless

It happens every playoffs. A guy like Chara (who Weber is a poor man's version of) can't keep up and just decides to rearrange some vertebrae anytime they catch an opposing player within range.

Think Doug Gilmour use to wear a pad on his back to absorb all the cross-checks he use to get from behind.
As someone who use to work in orthopedics, I'd make it with an outer plastic shell with a slight ridge down the middle, so when some idiot like Weber cross-checks yah in the back, it helps break their stick into two.

Simmonds knew what he was doing when he hacked the ankle of the Edmonton, life is tough on a D-man when you pivot and it causes you pain. I remember thinking when the Leafs were up 4-1 in the 3rd, how disappointing it was that the Leafs were not setting the tone for the next game, they were happy to coast to a victory. then Simmonds hacks Edmonton's ankle, gives him a see you in the next game love tap... and all was good in Leaf land.

Pretty sure its sets the tone for the next supplementary disciple, if Weber steps out of line, maybe the next time is a game.

I hope refs make a note of this for Game 3. All the "cross checking" by habs should be called.

From last game (based on what I recall; I am sure there are others)
  • Kotkanimei crosschecks Rielly breaks his stick
  • Weber cross checks Simmonds
  • Weber cross checks Engvall, after Engvall dummied him
  • Chiarot cross checks Matthews and Hyman behind the net
  • Petry cross checks pretty much everybody in their zone
  • Edmundson crosschecks Simmonds and others. and then wusses out after Simmonds tells him to drop the gloves
  • Perry intentionally hits Campbell and then has a knee up on him

habs are lucky they did not get called on for all the BS they were doing.

personally i think this 5K fine is like 5 dollars for the people that make millions. I think they should make the fine "hurt" financially.

start with 1% of the AAV (1st offense) , 5% of the AAV (2nd offense) to the max of 10% of the AAV (3rd offense) all in cremental.

Example:
a player makes million in AAV

1st offense: 10K
2nd offense: 50K
3rd offense: 100K

4th offense: 100K and 1 game suspension
5th offense: 100K and 1 game suspension

so if the player took fines 5 times he will be out a total of 360K + 2 GM suspensions. The financial fine continues until the total value hits 1M (their AAV).

This way it is fair IMO. a player making 1M AAV verus a player making 10M AAV it is proportional.

5K fine for Weber is peanuts compared to 5K fine for someone who is making league minimum and on a 2 way contract.

Just need 24 to keep his head next game. Pardon the pun.

If he can keep the habs in that mindset, our skilled guys should be able to draw many more calls.

Cant expect anything against 24 to be called, but against 34? You sure can.
