I fully expect him to do ok, but if you think he is a game changer at the NHL level, they you sir....are a typical leaf fan. :)

So because he took a few years off, he has lost his ability to be the type of defenseman the last time he was in the NHL?

Most likely, actually, yeah.
Except he's played like an NHL defenceman so far this year and everyone in the Leafs organization (and in Tampa when he was spotted there back in 2010) were impressed by his consistently excellent level of fitness. He's a solid NHL defenceman and he hasn't done anything to suggest that he isn't other than take a break for personal reasons for a few years in which he's stayed in great shape. He came back with the Marlies and instantly played like an NHL defenceman and impressed from day one.

So what makes him not a solid NHL defenceman? The only thing left is the fact that he's poised to put on the Maple Leaf. :shakehead

According to Bob McKenzie, on ThatsHockey, at this point Ranger is content in the AHL and doesn't want to move to the NHL and Leafs don't have plans to sign him.

pretty soft, why wouldn't he sign one?

guy has NHL talent but is satisfied riding on a bus 24/7 with the marlies?

According to Bobby Mac, he likes where he is. Apparently he lives in Oshawa and coaches a team there and likes the AHL schedule I guess.

It's so strange, because I was listening to a podcast and they make a big deal about how Paul Hendricks and how he spends all day at the rink and really gets to know the guys.... Hendricks thinks he will sign in Toronto.... So who knows
