We Have A Gm Problem

And btw, I hope you have the same energy come draft day when players get drafted who others don't agree with are called busts like last year.

What's good for the goose.....

I agree.

Sharp was Tallons Rizzo trade. Davidson has done nothing similar and from the looks of it wont unless he's the one giving up the Rizzo which, quite honestly, he doesn't have any more.

Teams are more then willing to give up draft picks and the teams that aren't are in the same boat as the Hawks.

Davidson gave away a 90 pt first line player for scraps while the lightning GM laughed and im sure other GM's laughed along with him.

Davidsons on his second head coach. Now that they finally got a cable deal and this slop team will be more visible I think Davidsons tenure as a GM is on thinner ice then many wish to believe and that's a good thing.
ok I am all aboard the KD isnt the right GM guy but this isn't accurate. Brandon Hagel never topped more than 40 pts for Blackhawks and didnt hit 90 pts until 3 yrs after the trade. Hindsite yes that trade sucks but it also allowed us to be bad enough to get Bedard.

I'll reiterate what I've already previously said in this thread.

This is a thread titled "We Have a GM Problem". The conversations within it were never going to be top notch to begin with.

And so if it gets a little off topic at points, who gives a shit? If any thread gets off topic a bit, who gives a shit? That's what happens literally every off season here. Deputy Whatshisname might not realize that given he's only been here for a few months, but the rest of you know what it's like here.

Stop pretending that some posters engaging with, ummm, less serious posters is taking away from any real solid discussions. Those solid discussions hardly exist during these summer months, especially when the thread starts off with a bang by saying that we have a GM problem.

it's poor talent evaluation considering Hagel was 23 and a 20 goal scorer at the time. Two draft picks and two players who aren't even here any more isn't wasn't enough then and most certainly isn't now.

Hawks would have been just as bad if the Hagel trade never happened.

I've been around and reading these boards for nearly 20 years at this point... KBIB, JFIB, PCA, whatever his username has been, he's always been a troll. Literally a decade of bat faith stirring the pot BS.

But not my forum and not my rules. Would be nice to see more people understand that and stop taking the bait.

Also talk about a bizarre excuse to say the trolling is ok because it's the off season and the tread title. Very odd.

Hawk's finished 1pt better (better for tanking, worse for standings) than San Jose in 2023. If Hagel is as good as you make him out to be, he would've gotten the Hawks more than that in the standings. Thus, it would've affected our chances at Bedard.

This entire board isn't just going to put a poster on ignore and pretend he's not here. That's not going to happen even if you think it makes sense.

I personally think it's better to call out awful takes instead of letting the narrative fester. Works better if the poster doesn't triple down, but at least we have solid counter-arguments to the shit.

I also did not say that trolling is okay during the off season. It's not okay at any point. But this board frequently goes off the rails during the summer months. You should know this if you've kept up with this site for decades. So don't get pissy it's happening, it's a long ways away from opening night and slight topic derails are going to be the norm until then.

there is a whole thread on the hagel trade question where i'm pretty sure this exact conversation was already hashed out (and not even for the first time). i've also said before i don't think it makes much sense to credit drafting bedard to the hagel trade. what hagel would have been had he stayed in chicago and what moore and boisvert might be in the future are undetermined.

if you twisted my arm i might even go as far as to say i'd rather have the debrincat trade back before i'd go back on the hagel trade. very good chance you lose him to free agency by this point though.

Big deal.

As good as Hagel is he wasn't turning that tire fire into a playoff contender.
My previous post was a little confusing wording wise, that is actually on me, so I'll try again.

The Hawks finished 2nd worst in 2023, granting them the 2nd best odds in the draft. Sharks finished 3rd worst, with a single point separating each team.

If Hagel was on the 22-23 roster, the Hawks would have assuredly gotten at least one more point in the standings. Which would have given the Sharks the 2nd best odds at Bedard. Meaning we likely would've drafted where San Jose did that season, which would've netted us the white Will Smith.

Hawks got, from your own accord, a currently "average" top line center due in large part to trading away guys like Hagel and DeBrincat when they did.

As I've said, all roads lead to Tanking in 25-26 for McKenna anyways... may as well have a series of high picks preceding that year and a great prospect/young player pool. Over/Under 0.5 Playoff Series wins 2022-2025 if they just rode out Kane, Strome, Hagel, DeBrincat, Jones, McCabe, Toews, Murphy team (same one that started 1-9-2) as far as they would take them?

Under -10000

Another great thing about the 2026 draft being so strong is that teams with cap space that are in the front of the draft will not want to give up 1st round picks and teams at the back of the draft won't have them and won't have much cap space anyway. So we're going to do quite well with our own RFAs that would require a contract compensating a 1st rounder or more to pry away. So we're not going to have much competition for Bedard, Nazar, Dach, Korchinski, Knight, Del Mastro, and Allan who all hit RFA at the same time going into next season.

So if KD planned for that, I'd say that's another W.

Are there ppl in the middle on KD?

Like I am mildly anti-KD. Telegraphed that Levshunov pick (who wasn't even the best D in the ncaa that year), allowed Sorenson to do whatever the hell it is that he did this year, TJ Brodie was a catastrophe, Bowman regime guy, deprived us of Patrick Kane, Jamie Faulkner collaborator...

but also did tons of great stuff like getting Rinzel, Nazar, Lardis, Kansterov, got Jones out of the locker room when it was necessary to do so, signed Teuvo.

His resume was probably not good enough to land the job when he got it, but he has done enough to extend his project.

(Toxic addition-If he drafts desnoyers over martone he should be fired)

I guess I am kind of right here to be honest. I like his drafts other than Levshunov I was team Buium. I pretty much agree with everything you say but my biggest gripe is the lack of activity in going after younger guys. I think this draft and lack of activity over the summer FA and trade market will have me in full meltdown mode however in about 2months.

I would say that 90% of hockey fans either love or hate their GM. You can hate KD for deciding to blow the team up if you like but he has the benefit of the unknown with his draft picks this early into his tenure. Because he blew it up, he hasn't signed any free agent that is going to screw up their cap for years and hasn't traded away any young player for a rental/nothing. I guess you can make an argument for letting Strome walk but it's not like teams were lining up to sign him at the time.

You can also argue with his draft picks but you can't make any conclusions quite yet. But if we're 2 years from now and the team still blows, then you have every right to call for his head.

I’d overpay a little to get it done. The odds of the overpay amounting to anything are probably less than 50%. Meanwhile Howard has already proven he’s at least NHL ready right now.
How he has proven that? I thought he was leaving Tampa because he wouldn't sign contract?

Yeah and everybody is talking about Rossi and Petterka and free agent xyz but I think those options are too expensive and these are shiny toys that don't fix things and don't necessarily help us for the future when we need playoff production and cap flexibility. I'm not as concerned with the free agency this year, I think he can add to the roster more efficiently without overpaying and handcuffing us with term.

2026 should be the last year that we should fully concern ourselves with a lottery pick and core prospects. Would love to see him get creative with all of the excess of prospects and draft capital to get some young cheap production with upside along the lines of Podkolzin, Geekie, McLeoud, whomever we can take smart gambles on below 6mil/5 year deals. Don't trust him to do so, but if he does , that can subside a conservative free agency class.

This whole argument is self fufilling. Show me a GM for ANY team (any sport for that matter) and I can Cherry Pick some decisions that didn't pan out.

Watch me defend KFC:

Drafting: From 2015-2020 Players the hawks drafted with more than 100 games played in NHL
2015 Dennis Gilbert
2016 Alex Debrincat
2017 Henri Jokihiru, Ian Mitchel
2018 Philip Kurashev, Adam Boquist
2019 Kirby Dach, Alex Vlasic
2020 Lukas Reichel

9 Total guys in 6 drafts - I would consider this a whole lot of shitting in the bed. Other than Debrincat and Vlasic everything else is mehhh.

KFC already has one with one closing in on 100 very quickly:
Bedard and Korchinski.

Trades: He did the impossible by moving Seth Jones when many on this board thought the contract was unmovable.

He did acquired goalie Petr Mrázek and a first-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft (No. 25 – Sam Rinzel) from Toronto for a second-round pick (No. 38).
Sorry Musto -
He did acquired forwards Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall from Boston for defensemen Ian Mitchell and Alex Regula.

As a matter of fact here is his whole history:

I would argue a whole lot more wins than losses:

They didn't pick Levshunov to be a better NCAA player than Buium. They drafted him to be the best NHL D from the draft. It's will never not be funny when Hawks fans compare Lev to guys the Hawks could have drafted, whether it was Demidov -- the 4th best forward in the draft according to 3 other NHL teams -- or a guy like Buium, who had so many believers amongst NHL scouts and execs that he was the 6th D taken...'

Sorenson was an interim coach. At least he wasn't actively stifling Bedard (or any of the other young players).

TJ Brodie was a bad contract. It's getting bought out. It doesn't and didn't matter.

Would Kane even have stayed? Assuming the Hawks wanted to keep him. The team was gutted and the gutting was necessary.

Davidson is the GM. Faulkner is the president of the business side. Do you think Davidson could fire her? What?
