this is more doom and gloom than i expected even for this board...

did we somehow play worse than you all were expecting?

we outplayed them most of the game. we probably shouldn't have outplayed them for any of the game.

just because we are not there does not mean we arent heading in the right direction...

can someone please explain why ron hainsey played more than hanifin, murphy or liles in the third period.

seems like something not to do considering the hockey team he plays for was trailing for the final 13:24 and that ron hainsey is bad with the puck (and bad in general)

he was even on the ice when the carolina hurricanes pulled their goalie

I still don't get why we signed Brad Malone for 2 years, other than that I really don't have any qualms about Francis yet.

It speaks volumes that we outplayed them, doubled their shots, and still lost the game. WE CAN'T SCORE GOALS. We heard all offseason about "all of those one goal losses". It's pretty simple. Outside of Skinner, we don't have a shooter worth a damn anywhere down the roster that can get that goal.

skinner doesn't score goals anymore, either. he just skates sideways and loses the puck.

Bill Peters is a clueless coach. The Hurricanes will struggle to score 150 goals under his garbage defensive "system". He puts 4th line wingers on his 2nd line center's wing and wonders why they can't sustain any offensive pressure and spend all game in their own end giving up scoring chances. Granted, JR 2.0 has saddled him with mostly 3rd and 4th line wingers so there's not much he can do. There isn't any help on the way either since the Canes' best offensive prospects are mostly 3rd and 4th liners, and at best middle 6 tweeners.

People seem to give JR 2.0 a pass because he drafted 2 defenseman in a row, one of which was selected way too high, and because he finally traded away a valuable rental last deadline which any semi-competent GM would do. The roster depth is a complete joke and the worst in the NHL. The bargain bin FA signings like Malone and McClement, and the acquisition of healthy scratch miscasts from other teams are classic JR moves. Hurricanes are going to be in a world of hurt for awhile given the lack of any real direction.

When the defense is finally fixed (if ever, don't hold your breath though), they'll only have 2-3 top 6 forwards at most. The whole franchise needs enema from the owner on down.

bill peters is the best coach in the nhl shut your mouth

So without reading the topic, did anyone point out how poorly Faulk and J. Staal played? Just about every goal against was the direct result of one of those two (or both) ****ing up somehow.

I saw their names come up a couple of times. Jordan Staal especially was noticeably bad tonight.

i thought faulk was great offensively...

was it faulk or hainsey that assisted on detroits second goal?

Faulk was great in the first period. But as the game went on, he tried to do too much and it caused him to make some really, REALLY poor decisions. Add to the fact that he was getting outmuscled along the boards for the entire 3rd period and it adds up to a negative game. But he did score the 3rd goal, which gave Canes fans free food from Moe's, a free BoBerry biscuit, and 50% off Papa John's, so there's that.

Also, I'm not surprised to see Ward getting blamed here, but I have to ask: Which goals would you reasonably expect him to stop? The first goal where Zetterberg was allowed to walk in front untouched? The 2 goals where Detroit had uncontested one-timers from the slot? Or the absolutely killer deflection for Detroit's 3rd?

Because I don't know the answer. It was a scrum in the corner where both players were there. Honestly, from where I was sitting, I thought Tatar had passed it out to Pukk, so I was surprised when they said it was unassisted.

Fact of the matter is we played great tonight.

It wasn't a perfect performance, but it was damn good. We score: 3 goals and gave up 19 shots. This one is all on Ward.

NMrazek faced a ton of outside shots, but several decent chances too.

By my count, ward faced 5 good chances, and allowed 4 goals on them.

Time for lack, methinks.

You know, as good as Detroit's chances were (the ones they scored on) I agree. 4 goals on 19 shots is not good. An NHL goalie needs to find a way to stop a couple of those. Every Red Wings goal was a back breaker tonight.
