Smith playing better for the rest of the period doesn't absolve him of responsibility on that goal.
Yes it does. If the wings start to play tentative the Hawks will eat them alive. It was a pedestrian 3 on 2 that if Cleary played properly is just a foot note in a high pace game. Smith was a net positive that period. Coulda put them up 1 early.
That goal is definitely on him, he turned the puck over and didn't give any effort to get back.
Cleary at least skated to get back, he covered the wrong guy, but at least he was covering someone.
That's not how it works. Covering someone who's already covered doesn't count as covering someone.
