Loui Eriksson's smoothness and IQ is something i never get tired of watching.

Loui + Sedins should revaitalize the Vancover offense this year. Just a question of the scoring around them.

A healthy Murray should compliment the CBJ defense REALLY well. Is Werenski gonna get NHL time this year?

Eichel is among the many players playing with guys they haven't ever played with. Both Gaudreau and McDavid play in different conferences...not much to base chemistry on..

Even without the rookie blinders and Leafs coloured glasses, Matthews has looked great. His EVS zone starts show that the coach relies on him, even after considering the fact he's not playing his normal position at center.

Possession stats in small samples mean little. Possession stats in 2 preseason, pre-tournament exhibition games for an All-Star tournament means jack **** -- and jack left town.

Eichel last year, in some of the most sheltered minutes on the Sabres, was the worst player besides Deslauriers in terms of score/zone adjusted possession stats. He was the worst on the Sabres in scoring chance for %. That's a full season of data. That's statistically significant. By no means is that an indictment on his talent level and future numbers which will improve as they always do (though those numbers for such a prospect are a bit disappointing), but please don't make it out like Eichel is some possession monster because the advanced stats in 2 preseason, pre-tournament exhibition games for an All-Star tournament say so. Perhaps we should also draw conclusions from the Coots-Trocheck line finishing as the worst possession line so far....and they're the #1 and #4 best possession players on the roster.

Curious how Eichel was a neutral or positive possession player when he actually got proper linemates (Reinhart, Girgensons).

Eichel completes 22.9 successful plays per 20 minutes that drive the puck up the ice towards and into his opponents’ zone, more than any NHL forward.

What? He had the second most points, most goals, and most shots on the team? Are you okay?
Just going to ignore this post? Love how you bring up Corsi in other posts to show how Eichel > Matthews but don't mention it now.

I feel like Eichel has been much better and people are talking about Matthews with rookie blinders on. Every time he touches the puck, it's some miraculous moment. Any poor play, well, he's a rookie. For perspective, Eichel has 3 assists and 9 shots through two games and a 60% corsi. Matthews has one point, 3 shots, and the worst corsi on the team. Reading this forum, you would think the opposite. Yeah, I'm a Sabres fan, so it of course comes across as homerish, but it's also right.

Well, you are wrong, but also right concerning you coming across as homerish. Not a fan of people using the corsi % without added context, especially in a short sample of games such as the one you're presenting, and one of the big factors in their difference in corsi for% is the way the two players are being used by McLellan. Eichel almost exclusively is deployed in the offensive zone (~90% shifts started in offensive zone in Game 1, 70% in game 2), whereas Matthews is either neutral (50% starts in game 1), or extremely defensive (15% starts in game 2). So it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone when the former supports a higher CF% than the latter player.

I know you've been one of the most ardent Eichel fans around and have been anything but that regarding Matthews and the hype around him over the past year or so, but let's try and be a bit reasonable.

I really like what I've seen as a leaf fan from Radulov

Plays with no heart or intensity. Glad we won't have to worry about him when we play the habs

Seeing as how Radulov isn't even in the World Cup, I'll take your thoughts about world cup realizations with a very very small grain of salt. Wow.

Ugh... this guy again with the unreasonable Habs bashing. Try being a hockey fan, rather than simply a Leafs fan!

Aaron Ekblad will one day be the best Dman in the NHL. He's only 20, it's unreal how good he is at this age.

With that beard he looks 30 years old, I mean has anyone checked his ID, it's insane... the Thon Maker or Bismack Biyombo of the NHL... hit puberty at 9...

J-Bo is a different player in international competitions than he is in the NHL.

He's no Subban/Gio/Brodie/Letang but he's been a definite plus for Canada so far, and outplaying locks like Vlasic.

Seriously. No way he's 20. He looks like a grizzled vet - his beard, his facial features, everything. Insane.
