The OT is limited due to arena usage and tv contracts.

They already do 20 min OT for gold medal games so doing the same for QF/SF games wouldn't make a big difference. And it would settle the vast majority of games without the need for shootouts.

Since the IIHF introduced shootouts in 1992 there has only been one shootout after a 20 min OT (out of 13 played) and that was the godawful 2000 WJC final that would still be going on had a SO not ended the madness.

That's a terrible and not well thought out argument.

What does winning a shootout really mean? it certainly does not prove you were the better team, not in the slightest.

No, elimination games in team sports like hockey should never be decided by a freaking skills competition.

It's a disservice and disgrace to the game, it cheapens the whole sport and the value of what comes from proving you are a champion.

It really is pathetic they use this at the olympics in elimination games.

See, now you know how high tempered were people about those two teams :) I know you don't like it but me personnally I really don't mind and I never did. Who ever beat us in shootouts just beat us, that's the way how it is for me. I personally realy like these emotions and preassure when you know what is comming....I would definetly stay till the end of any OT but I am happy I know when I am going home. But of course I respect your position here.

It's a gimmick though, nylund is right about that.

I don't agree with it in the nhl either but thankfully they refuse to use it in the playoffs.

Not so at the olympics, the biggest game there can potentially be a shootout so if we are going to be talking about gimmicks let's be honest with ourselves and admit olympic hockey uses gimmicks.

It's not a gimmick any more than sudden death overtime is a gimmick. Not all bad things are gimmicks. It's part of the rules of most international hockey that everyone is subject to. A bad part, but part. It is certainly an advantage of the World Cup that there are no shootouts, just like increased location control, generally healthier players and a best of three finals are benefits.

I don't think sudden death overtime is a gimmick. A winning goal has been scored the proper way.................playing the game of hockey.

Agree with you on the advantages/benefits of the world cup.

I understand why people are hot tempered about those 2 teams, but at least elimination games in this tournament will be decided playing hockey and not in a skills competition................as they rightly should be.

Oh well, we all have to live with things we don't like. :)

I wonder what people would think if Olympic Basketball games were decided by a free throw shooting contest.

Do you know what is by far the biggest team sports tournament in the world? It's the World Cup of soccer. They decide playoff games by shooting penalties too. Probably has something to do with the fact that soccer has about 2.5 goals per game, while in basketball they score well over 100 points a game. In such a high-scoring game there's really not much need for free throw shooting contests.

They've got penalty shoot-outs in Olympic field hockey as well. I haven't heard anyone say that it ruins the Olympic tournament. In handball there's a shootout if the game is tied after 20 minutes of overtime.

Endure with grace. ;)

I think it's bogus they use the shootout at the world cup of football too, really believe it sullies that huge show.

2.5 goal average or not..................play it out.

When do the tune up exhibition games start anyway?

I hope they show them on T.V and not just ours, would like to see for instance the Sweden-Finland games as well.

I have no idea but it has to be soon, I'm sure someone will post the details as we get closer.

Finland/Sweden is probably the most intense international hockey rivalry there is today, always worth watching. :thumbu:

OK here you go:

I gotta say, as much as I dislike the gimmick teams I am really looking forward to see the NAU23 team play. I think people are really sleeping on their chances, wouldn't surprise me at all to see them in the final.

Love the Finland-Sweden games...............they don't care for each other very much on a hockey rink, always a good thing.

Top rivalry to me right now is Canada-U.S and of course Canada-Russia is always special, the granddaddy of hockey rivalries.

Finland has a very serious little brother complex when it comes to Sweden. When Sweden loses, Finnish people absolutely love it. When Finland wins the WHC, Swedish people think "good for them, it's nice that even they get to win something once in a while".

But the emotions between Finland and Sweden and between Canada and USA are still nothing compared to what they have between Russia and the Czech Republic. Do you know why Jagr wears number 68 on his jersey? Those things create such deep feelings that you can't see anything like it between countries like Finland and Sweden.

I find U.S-Canada games and Sweden-Finland games far more heated then Czech-Russia games these days. Maybe it's just me though.

Yes, I knew about why Jagr wears that number.

They play those games in the same arenas, they have to be finished before the other game starts.

Does anyone care about field hockey or handball ? Are they in the class of top sports in Europe?? If they are my bad.

The last 4 minutes are always hectic and exciting.

I think I would prefer to watch a game with your guys commentators then any of the ones doing our games these days sans Bob Cole.

They just sound more hockeyish then our current play by play guys.

We don't have any Gallivans or Kellys or Hewitts these days.

I also was reminded just how much I hated Kent Forsberg, can't stand the whiny little baby.

Most Finnish NHL fans think that our play-by-play men suck compared to Doc Emrick and co. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

It's a ploy tourny with made up teams.

If Canada does not win, they can only say that they weren't allowed to use several of their brst players.

I don't put much stock into who wins, I'm just craving hockey at this point, haha...

Well I am only going by sound as I can't understand a word they are saying. It does "sound good" though.

Finnish NHL fans are in a better position to evaluate the other aspects of play by play such as knowledge of the game, play pacing and so on then someone like me as they probably have at least a passing ability in English while I have absolutely none whatsoever in Finnish.

And from the sounds of it I would never even be brave enough to try.

Sounds incredibly difficult to this guy.

And if Sweden does win I am sure that we will get a healthy Swedish contingent who will say...."look, we are better then Canada!!" and should they lose they will say "it was just a gimmick tournament anyway"

Both fanbases will contain a share that can and will play possum depending on the outcome.

It's interesting that some people dismiss this tournament as a meaningless gimmick and hold up the OG as the ultimate. Just how much more meaningful is the Olympic tournament anyway? Either way it's just one tournament that isn't going to alter the balance of power in the hockey world.

I guess I'll just say that we all know that Canada is the strongest hockey nation in the world, who wins this tournament isn't going to change that. :D

I'm only kidding. Or am I?

That is the biggest guarantee that can be made about this tournament. Winners will declare their national team the best, dissenters will be decried for their excuses.
