WC QROUND: May 7 GDT - Canada vs. Sweden

About 6 minutes into the 2nd period, with Canada up 3-1 there was a parade of players into the box...it went 5on4,4on4,4on3,4on4...and Canada put Nash on the ice with a 4on4 situation...Nash pushed for the 4rth goal (and nearly had it 3 times!)...but he made a bad decision to leave his feet near the blueline,to go fishing for a puck... and it caused an odd man rush up ice for the Swedes and Jonsson set up Pahlsson to make it 3-2.
This was a key to the game, the Swedes got rolling and Canada started running around fighting the puck for the duration of the game...I think Habshied should have tried to encourage defence,by getting his checkers on the ice in those odd man shifts...instead we "got greedy" and it cost us.
With more than a few of our defencemen playing poorly...we need to use the defensive specialists like Draper and Maltby...not try and run the score up.

I told you Sweden whould KILL Canada! I was right!

With the possible exception most people wouldn't consider a one goal victory in the qualifying games "killing" them...
:)

How did Canada lose.

Well, nobody's entirely sure, but most say it was due to their opponant scoring more goals than they did. In all seriousness, though, the defencive game was pretty questionable....

I'm a Flames fan but I'll call a spade a spade on this comment. Regher has been awful.

Oh and Jovanovski sucks.

Couldn't agree more. Canada looked completely crap in their own end. I have always thought Jovo to be overrated (along with Redden and Phillips - there's a reason Ottawa disappears every spring from the playoffs....).

I think CDA kept a bit in their back pockets for later in the tourney. Scarey thing is, we usually gel a bit better than this by now.

I'm tellin' ya, I'm not worried about the Swede team - they are an opportunistic pile of little weenies that caught a rusty, unmotivated Canadian team. I'm more worried about what those gifted forwards on the Russian team will do to that D. Yikes!!! :shakehead

Oh, and you wizards who think they should pull Brodeur for Luongo should start watching a different sport, because you sure as heck know absolutely nothing about hockey. It's pretty easy for a goalie to look goofy when he's gotta play defence instead of block shots.

Yes,there are better teams than Sweden...I'm thinking the Czechs and Slovaks can both be dangerous too. And lets not forget the Finns...they are very gritty!

Agreed, the Czechs are something to really look out for. But if Canada doesn't wake up soon teams like Sweden can be dangerous too.

Lets face it...without the NHL season for many players to prepare...and with so many NHLers not participating at all...this tourney is by no means a lock for Canada...on the contrary,it is wide open...anybody can win now!

I think Canada will be stronger next week. But this game showed that a hard working team will give them a hard game. Perhaps some of the canadian players are a bit out of shape though, it felt like the swedes has fresher legs in the last period.

With the brilliant, conquering way the Russian team has been playing , I'd be more worried about what the Canadian team could do to the Russian D, not vice versa

I too expect Canada to progress, but I didn't think they would still have so far to go 4 games into the tourney.
I think we will see less of Jovo, and I'm confident Redden will step up and lead the defence...he is the only guy who I would trust anymore!

Sweden owns Canada!
Actually your sarcasm can't be hidden..we all know this to be an anomaly...Canada has beaten the Swedes in the last 2 Gold Medal games..and not lost to them since 99!

Sooooooo? The Swedes have exercised some share options and now OWNS CANADA!!

Until your boys beat Sweden again, they've become Scandanavian property.

And dont try and deny that there'd be a lot of Canadian fans pulling this one if the shoe was on the other foot.

I am proud of Sweden. They pulled off a great win and an entertaining game. Broduer and Lundqvist cant be faulted though. I dont think that any of the goals were softies.

Aww, come on. Tell us how you really feel. Don't be shy now! ;)

Man our defense sucked big time! Many of Sweden's goals were gifts given in a silver plater. Although i loved the way they played Canada, cuz they didnt sit back and kept coming at us. With the goaltending and offense that we have we only need to cut down on stupid mistakes and we should be fine, i hope...

I agree. Canadas D screwed up on most of the goals. What you're forgetting is that the Swedish D looked equally bad on their goals.

So it evened out. I guess what tipped the game over in swedish favor was maybe a little better endurance due to playing on big ice for a season and, most importantly, a little bit of luck.

Everybody here is bashing the defense of the teams, but I think that in this type of games with such speed and intensity you must expect some mistakes. And we also have to give some credit to the good offensive plays.
