bwahahahaha! That's it? I just saw the video of the "Smyth slashing attack" posted above and all you people are crying about that? I was expecting much much worse from the overwrought hype on this thread.

What a joke - waffledave is totally correct. I've seen this type of "attack" in quite a number of games that I watch. Maybe a couple of extra slashes than usual, but it was quite evident that Smyth was slashing at Fischer's skate blade and I would be surprised if any of the slashes actually contacted the ankle or higher. Just an everyday hockey occurence to me.

One last thing - when you're watching the video - where is Fischer's stick located?

Hey I'm just saying that this type of play occurs all the time in hockey. Both Fischer's stick and Smyth's.

Otherwise, a well deserving win by the Czech team. CongratS! And Smyth is STILL Captain Canada in my books. He has served for his country's team so many times when there was no spotlight on the tournament and this so called "attack" has done absolutely nothing to change my mind in that regard.

It seems this kind of attack on our innocent player is normal for you, but for me it s not! Players like Smyth or "butcher" Bertuzzi should not play hockey, if they don t know what is fair play! :madfire:

Frankly I'm surprised that's all Smyth did. Ryan needs to get those competitive juices flowing again. I'm surprised he didn't go 100% loco on Fischer ala Doug Weight on Bryan Marchment a few years back. Plus Fischer is a big boy, he can handle himself.

I notice that there's a lot of judgemental posters on here... all they're seeing is Smyth's stickwork without noticing the stick in between his legs.

No, they saw it. It doesn't make much difference. So now it goes from him slashing Jiri Fischer because his team lost to him slashing Jiri Fischer because his team lost AND he was being obstructed. Doesn't change my thoughts on Smyth one bit.

Why doesn't he face up to him? Trying to break his toes is not exactly captainesque no matter how bad his accuracy with that stick was.

So now we're equating Smyth's actions to Bertuzzi's... I see... And Fischer is "innocent" as in that Innocent looking stick fondling Smyth's gonads...

Actually Smokey, they don't see the stick in between Smyth's legs. Clearly they don't - if you read white tiger's response (who declares Fischer as "innocent"). Its just the usual overreaction by posters.

And what is the correct "captainesque" response to a stick in between your legs anyhow? :dunno:

I frankly don't know. My response would probably have been a lot more viscious than chopping at Fischer's toe. (Do you know how hard skates are in the toe area?)

Don t make a fool of yourself, Fisher is absolutely innocent, he defended him corectly a he didn t provoke him. Smyth is mad man!

How about pushing back at Fischer? Getting in a shoving match would resolve the problem and not affect the health of Fischer nearly as much. If he gives Fischer a good shot to the chest and a shoving match ensues, no legitimate beef will arise. Sure, some anti-Canadians will step up and complain, but ask yourself this: What would Yzerman do? :D

How does slashing a skate affect his health?

Thanks for the video. (What a stupid file name.)

Fischer has his stick in between Smyth's legs the entire time.

I find it hilarious that some people that are calling Smyth a bad sport are basing it on this one incident. He slashes a guy who has his stick inbetween his legs and suddenly he's a bad guy? I guess it's okay for Smyth to be cross checked in the back eight times a shift, but God forbid him slashing someone in the skate.

That being said, I think he acted like a fool yesterday. If he was retaliating for something, fine, give the guy a shot and move on. He'll see Fischer again. I'd like to think Smyth is a bit embarassed today. If Fischer was on the losing end, and took about 7 whacks at Smth, we [Canadian fans] would be calling for Fischer's scalp.
No doubt

You are one of the few sensible posters on these forums, mcphee. :D

Ah Stevie Y - another of my favourites. True, Stevie probably would have done something different but effective. At the end of the video, Smyth does get into a pushing match with Fischer, but only after the whacking at the skate doesn't seem to faze mighty Fischer.

Hey don't get me wrong - I LIKE Fischer, he's just doing his job in making Smyth ineffective around the net. I'm just saying that both actions are a normal part of whack and hack fighting for position around the net. If hockey was easy, then everyone would do it!

anyone who's played the game knows going for the shins is more of a message sender - nuff said

lol...going for his shins. that's a good one.
Look its not the end of the world here but nonetheless it was ridiculous. Im sure he feels stupid today, he certainly looked stupid.

Smyth got crosss checked eight times? When? Anyhow, the stick didn't look like it was really between Smyth's legs, more upper body. Fischer shouldn't have been hooking Smyth but purposfully slashing someone's feet and legs 5 times is extreme(not to mention, vicious).Smyth then threw a couple of weak punches at Fisher, got seperated from him, and came back and gave Fischer a punch in the back of the helmet when Fischer was tangling with someone else. (I'm pretty sure the punch was Smyth too, altho even with VCR review can't be 100% sure) Long story short, I personally was less than impressed by Smyth's actions.Frankly, I think he should have a or two game suspension from the next World Championships and a big ol' fine.

Let me revise my comment: Fisher stick intially is on Smith's upper body but ends up between his legs after the first few slashes as they turn together. Nevertheless, Fischer's stick is not moving very much, I still think Smyth was way out of line.

i guess after the goalie called your team-mate a murderer - its all over the radio here in vancouver - i knew it had to be pretty bad for smyth to go wacko

And he had enough class to apologyze...
And if Heatley has some class he will except Vokoun´s apology because:

A) I have a feeling Vokoun is not the last person which will make him remember.

B) He plays hockey. A game full of emotions that sometimes make people say things which they don´t mean or would not say under different circumstances. I am sure it happened to Heatley as well...

You just can´t except the fact that Smyth totally lost it out there and made himself and Canada look ridiculous. I would bet everything on the fact that if a Canadian player was getting the foot massage you would be writing something totally different :shakehead

Say OR do things. No difference between physical or emotional abuse. One's just as bad as the other.

Is this a captain of canadian team? What a good example of sportmanship!

Give me a flipping break.

This thing has been so overdrawn, it's going right past ridiculous to hilarious, and back to ridiculous again.

Watch action in front of the net of every single hockey game. Tell me if you see anything different than what was going on between Smyth and Fischer.

He shouldn't have had to apologize, because he shouldn't have said it in the first place. If I'm Heatley, I beat that ass of any player on the ice who calls me a murderer, plain and simple. It's clear Vokoun was just being a dumbass in this situation.

This thread is going in f...ing circles :shakehead

Either...

1) In Europe, they don't show the action in front of the net when they televise hockey games.

or...

2) A whole lot of Europeans here don't actually play hockey.

Huh? If I'm reading that correctly, then because Vokoun won't be last person to "remind" him, that somehow minimizes the affect of his comment? If Vokoun had any class, he wouldn't have said it in the first place. Doesn't get much lower than that.
:shakehead

BTW, I'm sure Heatley is reminded of it everyday.
