Weekes: Washington: Charlie Lindgren Extended (3.5M-4M AAV)

I mean if i'm the Caps I would trade him for some forward help but I guess Goalies don't do well in trades so you might as well keep that elite tandem together.

Dont mind paying the best tandem in the league 10m. Some teams are paying that for one goalie.

Its better two have to 1A goalies than one starter and a backup who you have tough time to win with.

They also seem to love Charlie in the locker room. And with Stevenson not taking the next step this season our pipeline for goalies looks unimpressive. Dont mind securing the position for few years while we have no shortage of cap space.

Only positive sides here. hope they get it done.

A worse veteran backup would cost 2-3 mill. Stevenson and Shepard arent ready for the NHL and might never be.

So if you only save 1-2 mill to have a decent backup instead it might be worth it to go for Lindgren for some extra money to be sure you have a solid 2nd goalie. Im more worried about term than paying Lindgren 3,5-4 for a couple of seasons, but I dont want a 4-5 year deal.

I don’t like the AAV. Lindgren’s numbers are far inferior to thompson’s. They should have gotten him at 2.5 mil per

Lindgren was crazy good last year for us, and have been stellar this season. His numbers are a bit off, but pretty much every night he has played he has given the team a chance to win.

I like this for the Caps.

About half of the teams will be paying in the ballpark of 8-12 mills for their goalies next season. Including Panthers, Jets, Tampa, Stars etc. Contending teams. This is normal price range to have invested in the position.

I dont mind Caps betting on security with two guys, over pushing all-in for one guy. Thompson/Lindgren has the best combined sv% in the league this year and they have both looked to benefit from the tandem-set up. I cant find any negatives from keeping this duo together for few years.

Our pipeline for surething-goalies is empty as well, so nobody gets blocked here either. If Stevenson has what it takes, he will force his way in. Its not looking like that at the moment.

I don't mind the AAV if it keeps the term shorter.

That said even thought they are exploring it, i'd still think Lindgren gets atleast 4x4 elsewhere and i'm not sure the Caps are willing to go there. Maybe they'd go as high as 3.5m x 3 years and if that's enough then it's fine. Personally i'd prefer a 4m x 2 years contract since Lindgren is 31 already but doubt that would get it done. Lindgren has been underpaid for most of his short NHL career and this contract is propably all he has left to try and cash in.

Fun with numbers time...

According to Puckpedia goalie contract cap hits take up $223M of the total $2,755M 2024-25 cap spend (not total available cap). That means 8.1% of cap spend is on goalies right now. When you work that out on an $88M cap, teams are spending roughly $7.1M per team on their goalies.

So spending $10M on goaltending should be considered "high" vs league average. $10M won't be 8.1% of the cap until/if it reaches $123M.
