As explosive as he was as a rookie I feel like that got lost a bit over time and that was also a long time ago now where a lot of people didn’t see it. While he gets remembered as a good skater, I don’t think his speed is usually talked about like when Bure gets brought up, or McDavid

I guess I kinda misread the title. Selanne is known for his scoring, but I feel like that really came about because he was a master at using his speed to his advantage, not because he had an extremely lethal shot.

The window where Selanne was associated with speed is pretty small, mainly his rookie year. He lost some speed his second year and was merely an elite skater rather than one of the fastest in the NHL after that. He was still one of the best scorers in the NHL for years after that.

Not to disrespect a great career and a great player but I think he is and wil be mostly remembered for his insane record-breaking rookie season!

A lot of the responses in this thread center around a key point — Selanne was unusual in that his career had so many different chapters. Winnipeg, first tour of Anaheim, SJ/Colorado, second tour of Anaheim all looked different for him. Very unusual player in the way he shifted gears and remained at a high level longer than almost any other player in history. As a result, there’s no single answer to this question as the Selanne you got in Winnipeg was a different player than the one you got in his second run with Anaheim.

Since Teemu had a long ass career, where we saw him lose speed and still maintain his scoring touch, I think he will be remembered for his career as a whole for his scoring

I feel like them together was beautiful hockey

Agreed

I was a huge Mighty Ducks fan at that time, to the point I prefered them over the Patrick Roy-less Habs

Selanee/Kariya together was something to behold

I watched the movies and made my parents buy me Mighty Ducks merch and toys because of them lol
