Nothing ever changes in international hockey. Canada always whit a head start/handicap in imortant games, whit one or two goals, given to them by refs and "street smart"-Canadian players, knowing they have the refs in their pockets, plays the game accordingly.- If cheating is succesfull, just continue whit it! (Canadian elite-hockey players and coaches mental-mind set)

Give me a break. Canada does not get special treatment, especially when the Ref that made the call was Russian. Do you think a Russian ref would ever favor Canada intentionally? But according to you, the only way Canada can win is by cheating... yeah right.

As to the goal, we don't know what Camera angles the video judge has to see. Sure TSN had some good shots of it, but that's TSN. Essentially what it all comes down to is that when there is a video review if the video is inconclusive then the call on the ice stands. So it is obvious to me, that the video judge did not have the best angle to see whether it was a good goal or not. He then told the ref as such, in which case the ref has no choice but to go with the call on the ice. After the fact, I'm sure the IIHF saw the other angles through TSN or what not and they were embarrassed by it.

The ref didnt call the video judge. As rule 89.1 etc makes it impossible. The video judge called the refs; coz he wanted to know, why the goal was allowed.

Answer: Yes

Furthermore, had it not counted, Canada would have simply scored again and again and again. Get over it.

No. It was not a good goal.

Did it end up mattering? Not this time.

Bottom line is that the Finns should've never put themselves in a position where these sorts of calls can go against them. As the projected "top defensive team" of the tournament, you expect better than two guys standing around stationary like lamp-posts, allowing an easy break-away on PP.

But these are young men with a lot of nerves, and they are bound to get better as the tournament goes along. Canadians to me just looked more confident in their play right off the gate, and that was a huge difference maker. I'd refrain from judging the talent level based on this game alone.

I wish one call had gone Finland's way because it would've made for a tighter and more entertaining match, but that's mostly for selfish viewing purposes, not so much because I felt the officiating was biased against the Finns.

We played like ****, but it was far from a struggle. I guess Slovakia > US too?
Sometimes these young teenage players look passed teams they think will be easy to beat and it backfires. The US will be a better team today than they were yesterday, It is being played in a football stadium outside in freezing cold weather so who knows what will happen.

Canada is the best 100%

I don't know, one gold in 8 years doesn't really shout 'the best 100%' to me. It's not the 80's anymore... Plus, most experts seem to have US, Sweden, Canada as favourites - in that order.

Canada were the better team with a small margin on the day and got lucky with the calls. If the first goal had been disallowed the second one would not have happened (sure - self inflected slashing penalty) and who knows how the game would've gone from there.

Best team won either way, but the game momentum could've swung if those two goals did not happen and Finland might've been the marginally better team after that. Meh.

Good luck Canada today!

So why didn't they? It was a close game, Canada got a bad call in their favour which lead to another goal right afterwards, and a remarkably close almost-goal against them. Remember Canada only won 1 group game in regulation and not a single one in the playoff stage two years ago, then lost twice in the same tournament to US the year after.

Finland has beaten us recently more than once, 5-1 in the bum does not exactly tell me to always assume Canada will simply score again and again and again.

Let's not assume we'll win everything, we have home stage most years (ya Buffalo is practically that :) so that's good.. and today we have US on a back to back game so will be good to finally beat them after 3 straight losses! :) ..or I mean :(

P.S It is actually not an opinion whether that goal was good or not, IIHF has stated according to the rules it was an illegal goal. But let's look forward from here!

I didn't think it should have counted, but it reminded me of my favourite goal that shouldn't have been. Finland down 2-0 to the USA, who went on to win 3-2 after this goal was allowed despite it going through the side of the net. They even reviewed it and the video ref there said good goal, leading to one of my favourite John Tortorella moments.

Love how the commentators go silent on the replay in this version.

This and Ruutu's hit on Jagr's head were probably payed desicions. Feel always sorry for these. Should be always fair play.
