If they sign him using Kane’s money with the intention of keeping Kane on LTIR (even tho healthy) until playoffs, then yes they will have more healthy players under contract than the salary cap allows for
Kane’s not healthy. Again, have you not paid attention to LTIR operations over the last decade?

I have a feeling the return (prospect and conditional pick - knowing the Oilers don't exactly have tons of high-end prospects) will be less than some are expecting if they just look at Walman's counting stats and usage on a team absolutely bereft of capable NHL blueliners.

There's definitely a world where a rental Dumoulin gets more back than Walman, and people are going to be outraged by it based on "stats" - but a lot of it comes down to the type of defenseman teams are looking to add at the deadline and also that often rentals will get higher prices than guys with term when it comes to depth players. I mean, Soucy still has term and got less than Dumoulin as well. Sometimes the "no strings short term fix" is more appealing.

Something like a mid-prospect and a conditional 3rd that maybe turns to a 2nd (don't kill me, not looking at the Oilers draft pick chart here) seems like it might be in the cards.

I don't really see the fit for the Oilers, but I hope it's a win-win deal. Something around Savoie too crazy? I really haven't been following hockey lately.
If I’m the sharks I take the picks instead. savoie is looking like a classic AAAA player in the same mold as Matthew Phillips. Lights up the AHL but out of his element in the NHL

It has nothing to do with what I think of the Oilers. He's poor defensively like Barrie (when he was an Oiler) and lesser offensively. Not sure how you can argue that.
If he was poor defensively then he wouldn't be playing the minutes he gets or let alone be in the NHL.
He would certainly not be returning a 1st.

He is likely an offensive Dman ala Barrie but doesn't make then equal.
Barrie would be -30 on that Sharks team

I didn’t say he was. He has gone on record as saying he should be ready to return to the ice on April 1. If that’s the case, then you’d have to agree that what I’m saying is correct

I appreciate the response! I liked the Savoie trade for the Oilers, but admittedly haven't watched him at all since the trade. And I haven't watched any games for a while now, so my opinion is pretty worthless.

Sounds like first and a prospect

There are a lot of guys playing 17 minutes on other teams that would probably be 23 minute defenders on San Jose this year.

Walman is probably a 19 minute #4/5 on a good team who needs a blueline boost. He will help Edmonton and provide an upgrade in certain minutes, and I think Barrie is an exaggeration in terms of his defensive ability. He plays hard. He's not the world's best decision maker though.

Who's the worse GM, Bowman, for trading a 1st for an offensive dman going to a team that has just offense and has no defense or goaltending, or yzerman who traded a 2nd to unload a player who was traded for a 1st 50 games later?

Mike Grier cooked at least.
