The season he came back the Wings had a .451 winning percentage. His first year of management they hit rock bottom, but when he joined at the end of 18-19 the Wings were in the same position they are now, really bad. Detroit still lacks top end talent. Larkin was never the guy you could build an offense around and now he’s going to be 30 and has very little prime ahead of him. Raymond is a very good player but isn’t a top tier guy in a league where 40 other players are at or above PPG. Seider could be a Norris candidate but could also just be a very good top pairing d man. Ed could be the next Makar or he could be a second pairing offensive d man. And Detroit has a lot of future NHLers in the farm but no one that is likely to be a star player.
when he took over as gm, he had recent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall draft picks already on the team. his first year as gm the team regressed from 112 to only 90 points, then from 90 to 82, before bottoming out in his third year with only 48 points in 82 games. he was gifted a generational defenceman despite losing the lottery that year. the following year his team lost in the first round, second round the following year, second round the next, second round the third, before finally winning the stanley cup in his 8th year as gm. that year he took home the jim gregory award as the general manager of the year

his name is joe sakic, and i don't recall anyone ever calling him a failure, incompetent, or calling for him to be fired

Not to takeaway from anything you are saying but Joe Sakic took a lot of heat for the Duchene saga that went on for like a year.

You must not have been on this board when the Avs hit rock bottom in that 48pt season... I clearly remember some Avs fans contemplating getting the pitchforks out and threads being made comparing him to Benning/Chiarelli/etc.

By that point, aside from the Duchene drama, a lot of the heat at that point was similar to what Yzerman is currently facing. Wasted cap on signings that were quickly seen as overpayment (Iginla, Soderberg, Erik Johnson extension, etc.) and trades that either went sour right after being made or where it looked like Sakic got handily fleeced.

To Sakic's credit, he was able to clean up the cap mess and turn it around. I sure hope Yzerman has a Makar-like pick and can get some gems like Nichushkin and Toews in the near future.

The length that people go to defend this trade is crazy. If our GM wasn't named Yzerman he would be catching so much shit right now.

I don't think people are defending Yzerman as much as brining basic common sense to the discussion. Something happened behind the scenes that you will never know about. He was even healthied by SJS, and he gave his version of the story he decided to give.

Larkin said measured were taken and dealt with over the offseason. Where there's smoke there's fire. In this case it's an inferno!

Or you can stay in denial and be mad about clouds in the sky.

My BS radar has always said something behind the scenes happened with Walman, something we'll never know. Player on player crime with girls, etc. Coaches didn't like him personally, something.

There's just no way(imo) Yzerman thought it was a good idea to trade for him, resign him, then trade him away with a pick. It's never made sense outside of something happened internally, likely, not even involving Yzerman at all he just had to choose sides.

100% agree.

I didn't check his numbers this season, I believe he (and Hughes) has been injured.
However he had great numbers last season and was a top 10 dman in the league.
Anyhow all 3 put very good and even great numbers.

What does it mean?
Under what metric or criteria was Hronek a top 10D last year?

What a stupid and childish response.
I don't follow any of the 3 defenders I mentioned, but I have checked the stats and he was top 10 in points.
Suter and Namestnikov are also putting great numbers.

Should have checked at the end of the season. He wasn't top 10 for the year and isn't this year either.
