Not to takeaway from anything you are saying but Joe Sakic took a lot of heat for the Duchene saga that went on for like a year.

You must not have been on this board when the Avs hit rock bottom in that 48pt season... I clearly remember some Avs fans contemplating getting the pitchforks out and threads being made comparing him to Benning/Chiarelli/etc.

By that point, aside from the Duchene drama, a lot of the heat at that point was similar to what Yzerman is currently facing. Wasted cap on signings that were quickly seen as overpayment (Iginla, Soderberg, Erik Johnson extension, etc.) and trades that either went sour right after being made or where it looked like Sakic got handily fleeced.

To Sakic's credit, he was able to clean up the cap mess and turn it around. I sure hope Yzerman has a Makar-like pick and can get some gems like Nichushkin and Toews in the near future.

and that even rebuilds with award winning gm's and extreme draft luck can take 8 years+
