I was at Iceworks for my hockey camp today and heard Vlady Nikiforov has been signed by Bridgeport.

Thats great news if we signed Nikiforov, the kid showed so much potential at the prospects camp and I honestly thought he was one of the best players on the ice....I really hope this is true

In all seriousness, keep in mind that a contract with Bridgeport (which is what this sounds like) is no the same as contract with the Isles. If he has an AHL deal with the Soundtigers, he is not Islander property.

Thats fine...he will still be playing for our AHL team though where I would get to see a lot of him because I go to school in Fairfield so a trip to a sound tigers game is very easy for me. And if he likes the guys he plays with and he himself plays well then he would be more inclined to play for the Islanders because he would be playing with buddies of his.

These are giant steps foward for hockey on Long Island. Given the size of our programs, when a kid makes to the AHL out of juniors it's a shot in the arm. A link would be nice.

Here's an update on antoher Long Island native;

Yes, but can Melvin skate?

More important: is he fan-friendly?

"Melvin showed up in the baking section fat, and frankly we were forced to use Rick the first part of the grocery list until Melvin finally got around to the prouce section, when he wasn't an outta shape big fat pig. We won't be disclosing the shopping budget as per Islander policy."

Note: Joey MacDonald will be doing the shopping now.

I was on line in the supermarket late last night and I met a guy named Melvin. He was buying milk and a carton of tomatoes.

Was melvin going to make a tomato sauce? Perhaps hed eat each separately. Maybe he is lonely and was going to make his cat a nice meal. I fear we may never know...

I also like the heart and the skill of Vlad Nikiforov. But honestly, he is very undersized and is really going to have to make a strong impression before the Isles even consider signing him to a contract and giving him a shot in the NHL. But maybe, just maybe, he can be a Jason Blake type player for us. I certainly think he has the skating ability. But he is going to either have to show some solid defense / penalty killing- which got Blake his shot - or some excellent scoring ability. But he is a really fun player to watch. He leaves nothing in the tank and gives it his all everytime out there.

I hope the news is true. Heck, I'd love to even see him playing pro in Utah or Odessa - and who knows.... he could be assigned there. We don't yet know the ramifications of any supposed AHL contract.

His skill level seems undeniable and his Long Island ties are something to build on for this franchise in some capacity.

Also, despite a truly miniature size, I wouldn't count anyone out, especially a guy who's not ready to count himself out.

Hopefully he's got his eyes on the prize and won't let anything deter him.

Hopefully....

Great news..played a few times with him at the Rinx growing up and wish him the best.

Seems like no one wants to give the guy a chance, and he's the one who has gone out and given himself that chance.

tomatoes come in cartons?

Vlad

I found out today that he signed a one-way contract with Bridgeport and pending on how he does in their training camp and pre-season games will determine whether he will extend his contract and possibly sign a 2-way contract next year with the Isles
