2 years is a bit too player-friendly in my opinion but him and his agent have had this by the balls from the start so good for them i guess

still think there was some happy medium to be struck for maybe 4 years but i was also very concerned his AAV was gonna be way over $6M or blake was gonna sell out on some insane 8yr contract so this is a win in that sense

i guess if the team falls flat on its face, that's a very valuable contract at the 25 deadline too

It's closer to 5.6M left.

Kings still likely need to move out more salary.
gabe et al probably clear most of that $5.6M i'm assuming unless he goes extremely team-friendly, goalie's still gonna be the outstanding problem.. definitely need to move more

moving AI would be a miracle

It will definitely work out for Vilardi in the sense that something is going to get done given he is an RFA and he is arbitration eligible. I doubt he gets $5M+ unless something crazy happens. It will either be a friendly bridge deal or he will go to arbitration and get a short team ~$4M deal.

I’ve seen Arvy’s name floating around but I’d rather move AI. We’ll be in trouble without Arvy

AI would be the odd man out given they just gave Moore his deal, but Arvy is a UFA. Though, if they want to compete they likely will have to risk him walking unless there is an upgrade out there. AI is a staff darling though. They love their glue guys.

Here’s a sampling of the free agent goaltenders come July 1:

Jonathan Quick, Martin Jones, Jonathan Bernier, Joonas Korpisalo, Adin Hill, Jeremy Swayman, Tristan Jarry, Ilya Samsonov, Semyon Varlamov, Mackenzie Blackwood, Antti Raanta, Frederik Andersen, Filip Gustavsson, Connor Ingram, Cam Talbot, Alex Stalock, Laurent Brossoit

Quite the number of options, some less attractive than others, but some interesting names who can share the net with Copley.

I would like to personally nominate Durzi, Lizotte and Iafallo. Need to move on from forwards and plant younger, cheaper options in. And just need to move on from Durzi, plain & simple because there is already better options in the organization that should be playing over him.

Gavrikov is the big winner. Gets a short-term big money deal to play for a team with a couple of years left to try and win, and then after that can go wherever he wants and still get another big money contract to take him into retirement. Sign for 6 years and you are at the mercy of Blake or whoever the Kings GM is when the tear down begins again in a couple of years, and there isn't another big contract after that one.

Leverage is a powerful thing for an agent to have.
The wolf is full.

Good deal considering the need and all. Prevents that TDL deal from being considered an absolute disaster.

Sure, Arvi > AI...especially considering RW need. It's just that Arvi is a UFA after this coming season. He's also more valuable and easier to move (throw Moore into that as well).

Getting rid of Lizotte and Durzi also opens up over $3.3M in cap space, and both were utterly useless weak links in the postseason and absolutely got dominated against Edmonton.
I’d rather get rid of Trevor Moore and Durzi first before I get rid of Lizzo.

Trevor Moore seems pretty unimportant. I like Lizzo because he was one of the few guys standing up for his teammates along with Iafallo. It’s sad to say that this is the case but even if the balls on our team are front pint sized players, I’d rather keep them.

I don't really have a problem with the two year length, by the end of the two years Kopi will either be done or HOPEFULLY be going back to the 3rd line center position. Doughty will be even less effective, the short window will be just about closed anyway and they'll likely be starting another rebuild or a big retool.

All of these moves are pointing to either one of two things.

The Kings are delaying the inevitable which is going to be a full rebuild. There’s no first line center yet and Byfield likely tops out at a 3C so they need to rebuild again.

Or they actually go all in on Matthews to try to fix the problem.

I think a rebuild is much more likely.

like it, shouldn't expect any complacency if he wants to get paid on his last contract.

The path was painful and somewhat costly....but Gavrikov is 80% better than Chychrun, McCabe, or the other deadline defensemen. He's tremendous. Period. He was on the oce for a few ES goals in the reg season...made Roy look like an allstar and Roy vice versa make Gavrikov look like an allstar....

and EVERY time Gavrikov activated, was more dangerous than ANY KING FORWARD, not named Kopitar, Fiala, Kempe. He's a star. Period. With more offensive upside...McCabe was like -8 for the Leafs in the playoffs! Chychrun pretty much is meh and will always have injuries. Was plus 5 vs Edmonton...going on memory...while DD and Mikey were minuses. Gav is the best defensemen on the Kings....PLEASE give Clarke some time with him, in preseason.

I'd love to see Gavrikov get some PP time and activate more. He had 8 goals and 25 assists a few seaosns ago.

Hate Blake. I don't care. But getting Danault, Arvidsson, Fiala, Gavrikov (Copley and Korpisalo?) has made this team better.
Sure, he's made some blunders.

Agree 100%- we may not even have seen the best of Gav yet given he played most of his career on a lousy team going nowhere. Now, he's playing for a big pay day in two years and has every incentive to improve his already very strong game. I like this deal from the King's perspective- we get two prime years at a fair price, have the opportunity to resign him if appropriate and can flip him at the deadline in two years if we need to- players always wave their NMCs if they are sent to a destination they approve of. Plus, Gav and his family may fall in love with Manhattan Beach.

Durzi yes.

But I don't understand what people have against Lizotte. He's an excellent 4th line center.

exactly then get him for only 2 years, way too short ...should be 4 yrs

He may very well be here for 4 years, or 6 years, or 10 years. Just because he's not locked up long term now doesn't mean it was all for just 2 years. He had told CBJ he would test UFA, was traded here and liked it enough to forgo UFA and try a little longer stay. We'll have a pretty good chance of extending him when the contract does expire.

Alternatively, if we suck, we can trade him as he nears UFA and recoup assets.

A top 3 dman at that rate is a hell of a deal. Any way you slice it, they found a way to secure a pending UFA who would have been one of the best available dmen in the open market.

Now to secure a goaltender…

Relieved...no way is there a better d man out there and that already fits.
I get all the Blake vitriol and he dug this hole....but the Walker deal was not way out of line
and the Cal one, was a little heavy but no one was screaming so much about it then.
Most of the onus falls on Cal, the player, black holing.

Fiala at 7.9 and Gavrikov at 5.875.
Now a goalie and address Fiala not having a suitable center. Lizotte is notte.
Or, move Fiala to 2LW with Phil and Arvy and move Moore down.
But, please make Lizotte 4C again. Not sure if QB is 3C answer this coming season,
but try him there.

Hopefully they can trade Durzi for one
Trade Durzi this summer and give Bjornfot a legitimate shot till the trade deadline. Maybe even carry 8 D.

Bjornfot Doughty
Gavrikov Roy
Anderson Clarke
