Here's how much money Ole Miss pitcher Gunnar Hoglund is due to make - Clarion Ledger

Former Ole Miss pitcher Gunnar Hoglund is due a hefty pay day.

Hoglund was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays with the No. 19 selection in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft on Sunday. The slot value of that pick means Hoglund is expected to make $3,359,000 in bonus money. Hoglund could be paid less than that if he agrees to sign under slot value, but the team also could offer Hoglund more than slot value if it chooses to do so. That number is simply the recommendation by Major League Baseball.

Every team has a set amount of bonus money it can give to players picked in each draft. Teams can choose to offer players more or less than slot value but they cannot exceed the bonus pool, meaning if one player gets paid more, another player that team drafts has to be paid under value.

Hoglund has until Aug. 1 to decide whether he wants to sign the contract offered to him or return to Ole Miss for his senior season. Hoglund will not be able to pitch until the summer of 2022 because of elbow surgery he had in May.

Why draft a guy who won't play for another year? Was there not a better pitcher on the board?

He was trending towards a top-10 pick. 3 plus pitches, and some of the best control.

They clearly think he was worth it, and they may save [significant] money which could allow them to grab an Allen or Solometo (or Jump, please) who they've been tied to.

I don't really see that. He went right around where he was going to be drafted, and would have went higher if not for the injury. Sure from college so doesn't have as much leverage to go back especially when injured but you don't draft a guy and try to strong arm him, they'd know what he'd sign for. I think he'll come in around slot. Even if he's sitting there and willing to take 25th overall slot that's only 600k in savings which gives you 1.25 at 91 which is basically slot for 56th overall. Add some for the 5% overall and perhaps a plan to underslot 4-10th rounds I'm not sure you're going to get another guy in the 25-40 range. I'd be really surprised.

Who from our strong top 8 no longer qualifies? Kirk? Manoah?

I got Martin, Moreno, Manoah, Pearson, Kirk, Groshans, Orelvis in the solid top 7. Hiraldo could be right there in that tier at 8th.

Now if Manoah and Kirk don’t qualify anymore then Hoglund is easily 6th for me.

Just intentionally trying to crush my dreams today C4G.

Missing SWR which is why I was confused you had Hiraldo at 8 so assumed there was someone in there who must have graduated.

I do my best to achieve that goal :sarcasm:

Not saying it's impossible. Would be funny if the Allen link that kept coming up was a 3rd round link and nobody realized. Just seems rather unlikely.

My bad. I was using MLB’s list and they don’t have Kirk. So swap Kirk out for SWR.

Does time on the IL count towards not being a prospect anymore? Seems like Kirk doesn't have enough service time otherwise.

Merryweather no longer there either so perhaps it does.

Players on IL who were on the major league roster when hurt accrue service time just as if they are playing.

I know they accrue time, I thought rookie status was related to playing time but I guess service time also counts.
