The walk over to The Joe isn't too bad. I walked there from The Old Shillelagh. My party was going to take the shuttle but we figured we'd get there faster on foot due to the post Lions traffic and the snow that never stopped falling. So we set off on foot and then watched as the OS shuttle passed us as we were crossing Jefferson near the Joe Louis fist. Kinda funny. Not a bad walk, though, even in the snow.

My cousin swears by Buddy's and Pizzapapolis. I've never been to either but I do enjoy Jet's. They opened two locations out in Arizona (Phoenix & Chandler) so I've been very excited about that.

Yeah downtown is getting a lot more walkable. The Joe is mostly just in an awkward spot. Its not like there are nice bars/ restaurants right across the street. Plus there are some spots you wouldn't want to walk to from the Joe like Corktown, which someone visiting might not really know.

I figure they flew in last night and would practice either today or tomorrow morning .

Are practices at the Joe closed to the general public ?

I believe it has changed, can't remember where they stay now. My mom used to be director of sales there about 8 years ago and they changed hotels during that time.

Every seat in the house is good. I sat in the last row in 220 and had a great view.

My daughter & I are going to the Wings/ Caps game Feb. 18.

Any suggestions on parking? And place to eat before the game? We are coming from Columbus,Oh.

For parking I usually park on Jefferson St. If you get there early enough it's free and about a 5-10 minute walk from the Joe. It's the street behind the Post Office which you can find via Google Maps. There is also the parking structure connected to the arena via tunnel. I believe it costs $15 and it's pretty darn easy to get into and out of. Even after a game. Almost every surrounding bar/restaurant has free shuttles to and from the game as well!

Here's a list I typed out a couple months back of my favorite (and some of the highest rated) restaurants in Detroit.

Do any of these places do a shuttle to the game? A shuttle from somewhere is not a bad idea or an uber if you have a hotel, the thing to be aware of about a wings game is the flow of traffic. Most people that go to wings games don't live in the city and most don't do anything before or after the game so getting in and out of the game can be gridlock from everyone arriving and leaving at once. Being from Columbus walking 10-15 min through Detroit might be an eye opener. The area around the Joe is safe but parts of it aren't pretty. There is a thread with more info about Detroit

I highly recommend the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Public Library across the street. The science center and the African american history measeum are all within walking distance from the Institute of Arts. The Renisance cetner and river walk including visting Belle Isle would also be great and is closer to the Joe.

When I visited Colmbus for the Chinese lantern festival I parked at the Hotel and Ubered everywhere. I hear Lyft is better than uber and want to try that. Driving around Detroit can be pretty crazy and wings game traffic can suck. If you can park somewhere and shuttle or uber I think that would make the experience much more enjoyable.

Are Caps games always much higher? Any chance prices might drop as the game gets closer?

Hey guys! I am planning a trip down to Detroit for the first time, all the way up from northern Ontario; Kenora (near Winnipeg). The trip itself is a bit more expensive than I expected and I'm wanting to find 3 tickets to the game on Feb 18th. Those tickets online are far more expensive than I expected, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for better priced tickets or even have some for sale. Would hate to travel the whole way down and not even end up seeing the game.

I'm going to attend a game at the Joe this season before it closes. I'm traveling to Detroit and attending a weeknight game, 7:30 start.

What time do the doors open?

Which watering hole should I stop by before the game? I want a classic, old time Red Wings fan bar.

Doors usually open 1 hour and 30 minutes before the game starts (or 2)

As for bars I have no idea I don't drink. There's a thread at the top of the page (visiting Detroit read this thread) that lists some good ones

Doors open typically an hour (maybe an hour and a half?) before puck drop.

If you want to go somewhere close, there is Cobo Joe's which is a hoppin' Red Wings themed bar located on Congress across from the Cobo parking lot. You will want to get there relatively early if you want to get a seat without a long wait. Before games the place has a decent wait.

There are a lot of good bars to hit up and I don't think any of them really distinguish themselves from each other. Nemo's is a good one, though it gets really packed sometimes.

Cobo joes will be busy but there are others. Detroiters is good, old shillaleigh ive heard good things about. They all run their own shuttle to games too so you wont need to worry about driving there after

If you can grab a hat from Amazon or Dunams you will be better off. Clothing at the Joe is an unbelievable markup. I wouldn't be surprised if hat prices were $40+
