is it towards the airport? or the other direction?

which park would you recommend for downtown? or something that would be nice to visit?

kids are 13.

Prince's Island Park would be nice.

U of C is northwest of downtown, airport is kind of northeast. If you wanted to visit there you can take the LRT right to U of C.

thanks!

transportation wise, is it easier to take the c-train to get in and out of downtown?

go flames!!

What to do in Calgary?

Hey guys,

Hope your summer has been going well. In a couple of weeks, a few of my friends and I are going to be driving from Vancouver to Calgary and we're planning on staying in Calgary for a week and a half. We have a couple days already planned out for activities in Banff but I need some ideas on what there is to do and see around in Calgary and Edmonton. Maybe Banff as well.

Any suggestions or places to eat would be nice :) Looking to have a couple of relaxing days in both cities to explore. I posted in both the Flames and Oilers board because maybe it might cater to the local fans living in the city so if it looks like it's a repeat topic, it is but it's to have different ideas from the people living there.

Thanks guys and hope you're enjoying the offseason :)

Some good restaurants are:
- Anejo in Mission (Mexican)
- NOtaBLE in Bowness
- Charbar downtown
- River Cafe on Prince's Island Park
- Cibo on 17th (pizza & pasta).

For cheaper fast food, check out:
- Peter's Drive-In on the Transcanada (a must)
- Koob in Mission (kebab wraps - my favorite!)
- Tubby Dog on 17th.
- A number of food trucks around the city. Check out @YYCFoodTrucks

For nightlife, you pretty much have your choice of Irish Pub or Beer Hall. Top places would be:
- Craft on 10th ave SW
- National on 17th ave, 10th ave (the biggest and most popular) and Stephen Ave (probably best rooftop patio in the city)
- Local on Stephen Ave
- Ship and Anchor on 17th (go to pub)
- Rose & Crown on 17th.
- Wurst in Mission (German beer hall)

Things to do,
- I would check out the Telus Spark (Science Center), if you time it right, they have adults only nights where you can have a beer while learn things
- Flying Squirrel trampoline park just opened by the Airport and I've heard it's pretty fun.
- The Locked Room is a really fun way to spend an hour or two.
- You could check out doing a brewery tour at Big Rock or Wild Rose breweries.
- Canada Olympic Park has a bunch of fun things to do. They just opened a half-kilometer Zipline, as well as having a luge and bobsled track.
- We have a couple wave-pools if you want to go for a dip.
- If you're up for a drive, you can check out the Royal Tyrrell Museum (Dinosaurs!).
- If it's a hot enough day, rent a raft and go for a float down the Bow or Elbow Rivers!

There's no shortage of things to do and these are by no means all the restaurants, bars, pubs and things to do. Ask around and you'll have a good time!

Range did an excellent job there; most of my suggestions would be there too.

If you're heading to Banff, stop in Canmore and check out either Grizzly Paw brewery or La Belle Patate poutinerie (Has sick ratings for a reason).

There are some great hiking trails between Calgary and Banff, worth taking a look at. Also, if you guys are bringing bikes or anything, do the Legacy Trail between Canmore and Banff, it's pretty beautiful.

Like Range mentioned, if you're up for a little drive, head East to Drumheller, it looks nothing like the rest of Alberta; and has some pretty unique sights (along with Dinosaurs, they have the hoodoo, and some cool walking paths, including the old bridge to the old coal mining company). If you're not just a bunch of dudes (who could care less about quaint-ness) then there are a lot of bars and places to hang out (in Calgary).

If you have some people into antiques and old-timeyness in general, head down the Nanton, about a 30 minute drive South of Calgary. They have a ton of cool antique stores with some interesting stuff, as well as Alberta-style old architecture.

If you want some Calgary money-shots, head up the the Scotsman's hill in Ramsay and get that picturesque view of downtown with the mountains in the background. If you stop by there, head to Red's for Breakfast-Brunch-Lunch, it's one of the best in town. Outside of Monday's, you can then swing down to Inglewood for one of Calgary's boom streets, a lot of cool shops there and restaurants. The Zoo's right across the way too, along with the Dean House and Rouge Restaurant. IF you were coming in a couple years, I'd suggest going to East Village because that's going to be trendy as hell; I wouldn't go there now because it's just a lot of construction and homeless people pan-handling or passed-out on benches.

If you want kind of a mega-mall, go North to Balzac and you'll see the big mall we have. Clearly if you go to Edmonton after there's WEM; CIM is Calgary's answer to it.

Let us know how it goes!

Notable was fantastic both times I went.

Peter's is always good.

Don't listen to this man.

If you don't hit the right time; get ready for a wait at Peter's. That should be noted too.

Peter's will always be the best, you get a fresh serving of heart warming memories with every bite of your burger and sip of your milkshake (you know 30 minutes later when you can get some). Reminds me of stopping there to and from the lake every summer with my grandparents every summer.

I walked away last time i went to peters, considering i waited for over hal an hour in line and they served the two drunk natives that came up and cut the line despite the entire group of us waiting telling them they cut. doubt ill ever give them my business again after that. Boogies tastes better on the burger front anyways

Don't Fear the Reaper burger ftw

Did you guys know there's a Peter's in Gasoline Alley now? Saw it this weekend on my way back from Edmonton.
You're telling me I can pick up a double cheeseburger and a chocolate banana milkshake TWICE on my way to Edmonton!?!

woah.gif

I agree, Peter's changed the way they make all their food and it sucks now. Milkshakes are still good, however. But there are way better burger joints around now. Plus Peter's sold out and is trying to branch out to different cities.

Calgary area

We have our first trip to Calgary coming up and wanted to know a little about the area around the rink. We're staying at the Hotel Arts on 12 Ave SW and are curious if the area is safe enough to walk to the rink. Thanks!
