Soooooo......I am off to Brooks tomorrow, but right now I am in NE Calgary near the airport at a hotel.

It's kinda seedy and funky around here. I read a little about the NE area and Sunridge (where I am right now) and have found that there is a lot of *****ing and moaning back and forth about whether it is bad or not and blah blah blah....racism....PC libs....blah blah blah.....etc

Well, from an outsider, I have already seen prostitutes, strip clubs and a very crummy tractor trailer stop with "ladies" making the rounds.

But there are also a couple of nice restaurants around here, so it is kind of a mixed bag. I am a Chicagoan (living in LA now) so having a colorful environment is preferable for me, but dang this place is seedy as hell!!

Oh.....and there's wildfire smoke again just like in LA!!!

I'll be visiting Calgary for the 1st time this weekend. Big Flames fan. Is their a store at the saddledome or downtown where I can buy some gear?

Thanks.

I have jokes but they'd probably get deleted

That's okay, I'm pretty sure I know what you were going to say

I can't think of any stores downtown, but there is Fanattic at the Dome. There's also one at the airport if you're flying in and out.

Yeah you're basically right in the middle of an industrial park. I work not far from there. Don't recall ever seeing any prostitutes in the area but I do know the truck stop you refer to, and which strip club you're talking about. It's incredibly blue collar area, but there is some fantastic food around there too - you have to be brave enough to go inside.

At least now Brooks won't feel as sad. ;)

FanAttic has a store in the Saddledome as well as various locations around the City. Sporting goods stores will also have jerseys and stuff (even Canadian Tire)

There is one in North Hill Centre according to google. I don't think that is classified downtown, but it would be somewhat close and close to Motel Village if that is where you are staying.

Address: North Hill Centre, 14 Ave NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4T6, Canada

Having lived in the NE for most of my life and my parents running a shop in Forest Lawn, none of those places bother me one bit. In fact, going back to the NE feels like home for me and some of the best food is there

I grew up near there too, at the end of Junior High I moved to a nicer part of the city  my girlfriend is from the SW, like, the very well-off SW; so it's an eye-opening experience every time she goes there, for me it's pretty normal.

If you like Viet food, for sure, right near the Giant Tiger  dunno if I'd say the best food is there though, some of the best... ethnic (Right word?) food is there though .

Like the others were saying, you picked a fairly sassy spot to stay in Calgary haha. On a high note, you were right near Barlow, for some safe fooding (Joeys, Earls, etc) if you're not too adventurous.

The NE and part of the SE (mostly just south of 17th) are considered the less desirable areas of Calgary. Just the nature of the beast.

It is like anywhere, if you go looking for trouble you're going to find it. But I still think the NE (and Forest Lawn) is the roughest part of Calgary by a fair bit. I did grow up in Thorncliffe though, and it was up there as well.

Right now I live in Tuxedo and it's like a retirement community.

I am quite adventurous when it comes to food. I stayed only one night in that area and am in Brooks now, so I really didn't have an opportunity to savor the local fare.

I noticed a Nigerian restaurant, a Thai noodle joint and a South Asian place. Definitely have the kind of food I like, but by the time I was hungry it was late, so I grabbed something from Boston Pizza, which was open very late.

In Brooks now (doing something with the local school district here) and I have not noticed the smell that I read about. Nice little town. And if anyone needs an inexpensive hotel in Brooks, I recommend the Heritage Inn & Suites, not to be confused with its sister hotel next door (Heritage Inn & Convention Center, which is not good at all). Nice place and very affordable. Great rooms with awesome amenities. Very impressed for the price.

Yeah! Earls was right across the street and by "Joeys", I am guessing you mean Joey Barlow's? I wish I had more time to sample these places. The South Asian place is what really caught my eye.

Sassy is a good word to describe the area. And speaking of SE, eventually I will be moving to Calgary within the next year and it is the SE area where I will live; already have a house secured there.

I like Calgary a lot and have very little to complain about. It is almost home away from home and will become home soon enough.

Luckily, I have been a Flames fan my whole life, so I will be getting into them even more.

"Joey's" used to be called "Joey's Tomato", but I guess in recent years they dropped the Tomato part and replaced it with the name of the location, like Joey's Barlow, Joey's Eau Claire, etc. Like Volica said, Earl's and Joey's is pretty safe food. There's nothing amazing about it and truth be told, depending on the location, people really just go for the eye candy more than the food. Which South Asian place were you looking at?

Let us know when you're settled in and we'll recommend some places for you to try out. The SE is where my favourite pizza place is.

We've started a tradition of meeting up to watch the NHL Draft, so hopefully this means we'll be seeing a new face there. :)

It's called Sahana's Sri Lankan.

I'll let you guys know when I've permanently transitioned to Calgary. Will be cool to hang!

That's awesome man!
Welcome aboard to the YYC. I personally live on the cusp of the SE myself, maybe the trendy SE lol  so there's a lot of good **** in Calgary.

I grew up in the SE so whenever I have to travel to the north, I feel a bit scurrd.

Growing up in the SE as well; when I go to the NW I'm like... where the **** am I? I have a house there right now; and when I first went up in the NW it was like going to a new town
