Vilardi vs Turcotte

Avs fan coming in peace: would you guys consider packaging both Vilardi and Turcotte for Girard + prospect (let’s say Kaut, former first round pick)? It may solve your issues about finding an offensive first line LD on a long term sweet deal while it will give the Avs options on on the 2nd/3rd line center positions for years to come
I would definitely consider that. Girard is a very good player on a great contract. We have a massive need for impact LD men. And both Turcotte and Vilardi have been disappointing so far.

I'd classify him as a top-3 defenseman. Playing 21 minutes a night so far on a crowded (at the top) Colorado defense and had 23+ a night last year. To me, guys like Drew are number 1's, and I wouldn't put him on Drew's level.
I agree. Girard might be a perfect top LD if paired with a physical RD, otherwise he slots on the second line. He is only 23 y/o and signed for 5 more years at 5 mil. What makes him expendable from the Avs point of view is only the log jam at LD with Byram and Toews and the need to manage the cap to get depth after having lost Saad and Donskoi. I truly believe that this might be a good hockey deal that can result to a win-win for everyone

And where is this top 4 "physical RD" on the Kings or are we trading for that guy as well?

The nice thing about trading for a 23 year old who is signed for five more years is we don't have to have an immediate perfect partner. He's still an upgrade on everyone but Doughty, so if the deal is there you make it knowing you have time to find the perfect guy to go with him.

If the vision is short term, acquiring a player like Girard is a great tactic. He could slot in on the top pair ASAP with a healthy Doughty. And he could provide a sugar rush at 5v5 plus PP. If Kopitar and Doughty need more support out there with them, Girard gives them a shot in the arm.

Longer term, the picture is less clear. Neither Vilardi or Turcotte is anywhere close to an official bust. Both guys still reasonably project to play 500+ NHL games. Their timeline to being NHL top 1/200 players is the big question. Girard is in that tier today at 23yo. Vilardi is 22, Turcotte 20. Neither a fixture in their NHL teams top two lines anytime soon this season.

Both guys need as much time as possible in the AHL. It prepares players for the grind and ups and downs of the NHL season. Vilardi should have played at least 100 AHL games or so.

I like his point production but he is a bit undersized. I've heard the ramblings on the avalanche forum about him and his playoff performance, but he is a good player. I would say no to both vilardi and turcotte, but possibly vilardi for girard+. I don't know what the Avs would be willing to give up but possibly a decent forward prospect and girard?

Girard is worth a lot more than Vilardi

Girard himself played a total of 6 AHL games, at the end of his last junior season.

A case can be made for Vilardi to go down, and he may at this point once Andersson and AA get back, but it's not to get used to the ups and downs. You don't play in the AHL to get used to the NHL game, just as you don't use the NHL as a developmental league.

Not that Vilardi looked out of place in those first 10 games. It's the 24pts in the following 60 games that have been the issue. If he's going to be 12th out of 14 F's in ES ice time, only ahead of two other rookies, then he may need some more time in Ontario.

Can he be sent down without having to clear waivers?

If it were up to me, and of course it's NOT.

Vilardi would be on the first line with Kopitar and Arvidsson.
2nd line would be: Iafallo, Danault and Kupari
3rd line would be: Andersson, Byfield, and Tkachev
4th line would be: Moore, JAD and Brown (Sorry Dustin. It's time for the kids to get minutes)
extra Forwards: Grundstrom and Lizotte

Trade: Kempe, AA and Lemieux. Really don't care what for. Futures, picks.

Until Doughty comes back:

Anderson, Roy
Edler, Strand
Bjorfort, Clague
Maata. Once Doughty is back jettison Maata.

To AHL

Kaliyev and put him on the line with Turcotte and Fagemo.

Baring injuries of course. roll with and let the season playout. We need to know where Vilardi, Andersson, Kupari, Tkachev, Strand and Clague are. If they aren't part of the future move em for a LHD or impact top 6 forward. We probably finish bottom team. If we luck out on lotto, we get top end talent. If not, we have a trade piece for a LHD upgrade or Top six forward.
