OT: Video Game Thread

Anyone have recommendations for PS4 games? I'm just finishing up one and just finished a project at home so I'll have more time to play on weekends and such.

Thing is I've been limited in the games I've played in the last ten years or so (because I was poor and busy) so I always tend to fall back on series that I know rather than invest $50 in something new that I don't know if I'll like or not. For the style I like, generally I enjoy open-world games like Rockstar makes (GTA, RDR2) or Assassin's Creed games, and I always like Hitman. I could always get more of the games I've missed in those series to get caught up, but part of me wants to stop leaning on the same things I always have and to try something new. So any recommendations on that front in terms of games that play somewhat like the ones listed?

Last year I did download Horizon Zero Dawn or whatever it's called when PS Store was offering it for free but honestly got bored rather quickly - the more science-fictiony it gets with dinosaur robots and crap, the less I care. The more grounded a story and gameplay is in reality the better, IMO.

you seem to like the same games as me. I hate sci fi games. zombies and crap like that.
I love the hitman series. Sadly the game I play the most now is from 2006. Its the blood money remastered version on ps4.
Maybe give the game The Long Dark a try?? Just a survival game. No zombies or crap like that. I also liked the game Gone Home. Think it was made by fullbright company?? Pretty sure they are at least 4 or 5 year old games so they shouldnt cost much.

Blood Money was one of my favorite games of all time. I spent like all of 2007-2008 playing that game, probably found every way to complete each mission. Great, great game that even the new Hitman games haven't been able to replicate successfully. I played the first PS4 one and it was alright but felt almost too scripted, like there's less creativity and flexibility and you have to follow very specific steps to assassinate targets in the ways the game wants you to. I still ended up enjoying them and may pick up the newer one later on. But Blood Money can't be topped in terms of level design, missions, music, etc.

I'll take a look at the ones you recommended and see if they look any good.

@McGarnagle

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is probably still on sale. Easily 150+ hour game, even if it's stayed away from the original Assassin's Creed playstyle to a more action combat focus.

Vikings, etc. I'm STILL working on it, but I have enjoyed it.

Blood money cannot be beat as a non sport game for me.
Even hitman contracts and hitman 2 silent assassin were excellent games. and definitely less scripted than the newer Hitman games.

Contracts and Silent Assassin had good gameplay and missions you could problem solve in different ways, but the tone is so dark. What made Blood Money special was how enjoyable the setting was. The Opera House, Suburban Neighborhood, Mardi Gras, the Casino/Hotel, etc. are so memorable. All those missions were just so fun to explore and the overall tone of the game is much brighter than the earlier PS2 ones.

Also, another one I forgot to mention that I enjoyed was Spiderman on PS4. It came with the console when I bought it, and it's a lot of fun, open world, swinging around Manhattan is pretty cool.

I bought an Assassin Creed years ago I forget which one. I think it was in Europe or was the revolutionary war one. I played a few times but whenever my boy would come over he would play it for a few hours and after a few months we checked his progress after hours upon hours and he was only 17% thru.

I loved the Hitman series before PS4. I think I loved the older hitmen series cuz u could use codes and get all the guns.

There was an old PS2 or PS3 game came out around the time max payne came out called dead to rights I believe I loved that game. Kessen on PS2 was also one of my favorites.

The Hitman movies never did it justice. I think like Punisher it needs a Netlflix type show.

Okay, best old school game that never gets any love?

My nomination is Legend of Kage on NES. This game was so fun and playable. And the visuals for the time really made it feel like you were floating/flying.

Elden Ring has been a lot of fun. Took a break from Valhalla to play it. You do a lot of dying but the sense of exploration and strategy involved in taking out various bosses is cool. Ghost of Tsushima is on my list for this summer. tremendous looking game. Been sitting on my shelf for months now.

Wow NBA 2K22 only $10 at the PS store must be cuz of playoffs. Lmao NHL 22 is still $53

NHL typically goes on sale in the PS Store around November during their Black Friday deals. That's usually when I'll buy newer versions lol. I refuse to pay full price for what is basically roster updates.

With NCAA rules being changed I am really hoping for an NCAA football game. I know they were more popular than madden. I used to play the 2K college basketball series.

Hope college games come back

People have always told me PC games are superior. During the pandemic was watching this guys channel Jeff Faviango or something and PC games look much more in depth. But some dudes like the Jeff guy get into it like he has American Trucking and he has whole driving rig for it.

I also like how he could play GTA as a cop
American Truck Simulator is one of my favorite games. I wish someone would bring back NHL and NFL to the PC, as I don't have a console.

I have played video games all my life. I used to play Street Fighter 1 in an arcade so I think I am showing my age here. I continue to play games but I have become a lot pickier about what I play. I stopped playing sports games because I was way too competitive and I wasn't happy with buying what was essentially the same game year after year. I am not an FPS enthusiast either. Now I am mostly into horror and survival horror games.
Same bud!
I’ve been playing death road to Canada a lot lately.
Almost like a choose your own adventure but with some fun zombie killing action.
Nice 16bit style graphics too.
Give it a look,
Might be up your alley
