OT: Video Game Talk (oh, also the Week before the All-Star Break Pre-Game Talk "archive")

Walmart is taking pre-orders for the Switch 2 starting tonight. What do you guys think, go for it? Worth it?

I never bothered with the original Switch so the entire library would be brand new for me.

Buy it day 1, put it in a drawer, and hope someone can find an exploit for it in the next 6 months or so. When someone finds a jailbreak, sell it for 2-3x what the original price was

I'll probably keep it if/when it does get cracked, especially considering Mario Kart alone is $125 CAD. I don't really care about the online part.

I lucked into a early OG switch that was exploitable. I modded it and bootlegged a lot of games. Mostly old console ports and not Nintendo exclusives. So it was nice for Sniper Elite and Metro before the Steam Deck came out

I'm gonna try and preorder one, but the preorders start at 12AM EST. So I'll be at Ball arena watching the Avs when it happens. Don't know what kind of signal I'll have from my seat. If you like Mario Kart, then I'd also recommend the bundle. That brings the game down from $80 to only $50. Seems like it's worth it.

Yeah, the bundle would be the plan if I go ahead with it. It makes the most sense since I'd want Mario Kart anyways.

I'm the second person, as much as the non mission stuff is an open sandbox, the actual missions are way too rigid in requirements. Writing is meh and feels smug
I've never actually gotten around to playing any of the GTA games. I played Saints Row IV, which was just bat-shit crazy fun. Is it worth while to go back at this point and play any of the older GTA games or would the best bet be to just wait until the new one releases and jump into the series then?

4 was decently fun and it's always cheap, and had pretty okay DLC

GTA 4 was the best. 5 had worse driving, shooting, physics, story and characters.

The driving and shooting being worse especially hurts since that's what you will be doing most of the game. Still a fun game, but I don't get the hype honestly.

Ok, so less than 4 hours in and I am already completely enthralled with Expedition 33. The comparisons to FFX are so completely on point in terms of storytelling. The emotional beats hit early, fast and put you in a place where you want to learn more about the world and its characters. The French Renaissance-adjacent fantasy setting is really interesting and helps provide a base plotline that is entirely unique. If I had to compare the vibes to anything it'd be Lies of P, which is a major compliment.

Almost more impressive though is the combat loop. It's a traditional turn-based JRPG at its core, but pushes the genre with a Legend of Dragoon (or Paper Mario)-esque timing system. If you time your button presses correctly you can enhance your own attacks and dodge/parry enemy attacks to avoid damage completely. This leads to some incredibly tense moments within what is typically a fairly straightforward turn-based system.

Coming away from this small sample of what the game has to offer, I'm really just blown away that this was created by an indie studio making their first game on a AA budget. The cracks are there. As stunning as the game is, there's definitely signs that it didn't have the biggest budget...mainly in the lip synching and cutscene transitions. But MAN, what an impressive first outing and an absolute no-brainer purchase considering the price point. I couldn't recommend it enough, especially for JRPG purists.

Switch 2 pre-ordered. Best Buy's preorders launched 28 minutes late (I was refreshing during the game) and it took an hour to get through the line.

But at 10PM on launch night I will have a Switch 2 in my hands.

I was able to pre-order one from Target last night at around 11:45PM. I tried at 10pm, but all the servers were just overloaded I guess. Saw a post on Twitter by Wario64 that "Target links were back up" and sure enough I was able to snag it.

Nice. I got too cute with it. Could've pre-ordered through Walmart last night but decided to wait for Best Buy today because I much prefer them for gaming and their accessory replacement policies. Of course, I couldn't get it at Best Buy and now I have to try Gamestop at 10 am.

Hot take - GTA5 didn't do anything for me. I think the only game on Steam I ever refunded. Didn't even beat the first mission. Controls were just garbage. 4 was fun though
GTA Vice City is easily the best GTA game made, but RDRII really trumps the last two GTA games quite easily.

For me, what happened is that GTA IV is what GTA V should have been if that makes sense. For example, everything you could do in GTA V should have already been in GTA IV, even if the game needed an extra two years to add everything. Of course, that would have never happened because there are financial implications and software limitations when you delay a game two extra years. Nonetheless, I personally loved GTA IV's story. You start as a random Russian immigrant and make yourself into a thug, meeting a lot of interesting characters. It was done very well if you'd ask me, as you saw a ton of character development. The biggest problem is the map was a big letdown and was completely empty or devoid of things to do. Similar to the same problems I had in BotW versus TotK.

Rockstar fixed that mistake in GTA V with the map being insanely refreshed with countless number of things to do or see. I spent countless hours not even finishing that game because my friend and I were using subs to explore the entire sea lol. But the story was a big letdown. The entire plot was just a huge rehash of movies done in the entertainment industry. Switching between the three characters was unique, but each character was again a huge giant copy of one from movies or games in the past. Michael is one of the most boring characters I have ever played as, Franklin is Carl Johnson 2.0 but a worse version of him, and Trevor is so effing over the top that it actually works against his character (you never go Full Pejorative Slur). Hopefully, they learned from those aspects in GTA VI.

I recently got RoboCop and TMNT off PSN, but I've been playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, so I haven't had time to try either. I also bought Spyro again somewhat recently. It's a good time for new games. Or old games.

RoboCop is a fantastic game. If you liked the movies you'll love that game. Only complaint was some performance issues, but they're very minor, and might've already been patched out.
