I never said I'd take the Sharks' fate over us. What part of admiring their competitiveness don't you guys understand?
I just can't accept these rebuild talks when our main core guys are still in their prime. It's not like Kopi, Doughty, and Quick are in their mid-to-late 30s. Until those 3 are really washed up, **** the rebuilding talks.
One thing the Sharks don't have to do right now is pay their top center $10m. Pavelski is obviously worth the $6m cap hit. Marleau may be slowing down, but he still hit 25 goals and almost 50 points last year, and he just turned 37. And he's got just this year left on his contract. The Kings are paying $11m on the cap for whatever Brown has become, and Gaborik who you never know if he'll be healthy, and had a whole 12 goals last year. Quite different from Pavelski and Marleau.
The Sharks are currently getting more for their money. Vlasic has a little bit higher cap hit than Martinez, but Vlasic is a top 6 guy for Team Canada, while Martinez isn't making those kind of teams. $3m less for their starting goalie. With the $3m less they pay their top center, and $3m less they pay for their #1 goalie, that's another $6m player the Sharks can have.
Burns is getting less than Doughty, and has been outplaying Doughty head to head for the last year, maybe 2 years. Although, they'll probably have to pay a little more to keep him this summer.
If the Kings hadn't won in 2012 and 2014, are all the contracts the same as they currently are? Quick? Kopitar? Brown? Gaborik? Martinez? No Cup, maybe you give up some money for the greater good. Won a Cup? I'm in the history books, so give me the money.
I wouldn't worry about the Kings actually rebuilding. Trying to fill the gaps from year to year and see if anything sticks, sure. They can't get rid of any big contracts though, and you're not rebuilding if you can't do that.
