HF said the Pens would have to buy out Fleury because there was NO way he'd waive his NMC voluntarily!

Oops.

HF said the Pens would be paying a big price, probably their 1st, in order to make sure Vegas took Fleury!

Oops.

Any more brilliant predictions about the Pens, HF collective? :sarcasm:

Don't forget "Vegas is never gonna do a deal to take Fleury when they could just do nothing and get Murray for free. Why would they do them a favor?" The guffawing around he TDL was especially wonderful. Meanwhile Fleury was a monster on the way to another cup, and today Rutherford has 21m of cap room all for the price of a 2nd rounder.

Hard to fully appreciate how wrong all that collective schadenfreude was.

Only 40% of second round picks become NHL players.

It was a cost, and meaningful, but also well worth it given that Pittsburgh needed certainty in February moving forward. If they overpaid in hindsight, it wasn't by much.

And by the time that pick would contribute six to eight years from now the core will have already been close to retirement and may have bagged another cup or two.

Eye on the prize people, eye on the prize.

Smart for GMGM to spread out his draft picks. What many people seem to be forgetting is that in addition to all of the 2nd/3rd/4th picks GMGM picked up for this season, a lot of the players that they picked and will trade away over time and at the deadlines, they will pick up even more draft picks for 2018 and 2019.

Teams can only develop and promote so many players in any given year -- including issues of waiver-exempt windows for prospects, how many rookies to have on a young team each year, etc. Vegas has plenty of picks this year and will compile more with players they will trade. At some point they will be very happy to have those extra pics in years 3, 4 and 5, even though people may complain about it now. That is how you build a team that can have a sustainable influx of good young prospects.

Yeah, it was pretty hilarious how some HF geniuses insisted there was no way the Pens weren't losing Murray.

Oh well. Maybe at some point people that don't follow the Pens might actually listen to fans who do. It's just possible we have a better grasp on our club than someone who follows them one or two games per year do.

Hopefully Flower does well in Vegas. Odds aren't in his favor with how bad the roster is they've assembled through the expansion draft, though.

Couple months back i also remember Pens fans saying adding anything to Fleury would be ridiculous and Vegas would just be happy to pick Fleury.

IIRC it was even a 2nd rounder (or 3rd, can't remember which) i suggested back then, and got like 5 hateful comments how "that is not how it works" and "we'd just trade him somewhere then".

Of course people who thought they'd lose Murray were idiots, but the amount of people getting sensitive from both sides just for simple predictions of what else might happen was the ridiculous part.

Because of Fleury, I will be rooting for Vegas as my #2. I wish him nothing but the best.

Kind of a sad day as a Pens fans since it's the end of an era. I remember Fleury getting picked #1 in 2003 like it was yesterday. Amazing how fast time passes.

It sucks to have to add a pick but I guess it's worth it to eliminate any drama that they may take someone else. Keeping Rust, Cole, Hagelin etc. and freeing up cap space was easily worth a 2nd in 2020.

It really was a smart move by both teams. Pens not spending any more of this years picks since they're running low on them and Vegas taking the pick from a few years from now when the Pens may start coming back down to earth a little bit with Sid and Geno getting older at that point. The 2020 2nd will likely be higher than the one this year, next year or even the year after.

I dont really understand the dynamics here...

at first glance Fleury is the BEST player Vegas got.

Shouldn't Vegas be the one paying Pittsburgh to be able to take him? (i know pitt could only protect 1 goalie, but they could also have traded him for value instead of losing for free to another team)

At the very least - Pitt doesn't need him, Vegas does, Vegas takes him, both teams go home happy, 0 picks exchanged.

Why in the world would Pitt pay Vegas to take him? Am i missing something? Was there some other better player than Fleury left unprotected by Pitt?
