This is my 2 cents behind the logic of the trade. Vegas picks him up and will have insurance pay 80% of his salary but will use him for Cap Flexibility. Only thing Islanders really gain out of the deal is 1M and not having to worry about him possibly coming back(small possibility) as they fill out their roster this summer, they could have easily kept him and put him on LTIR

I don't think it has been confirmed that he has insurance.

Nelson is soft and frustrating. 20 goals a year and 45 points for 2.5 million.

I'd rather have the 15th pick and the 2nd rounder than Nelson, Strome or Pelech but Snow is under pressure to win now so I get why he did this. He gave up a lot of value though.

You're delusional if you think this is a "huge win." You gave up a 1st and a 2nd in the expansion draft. You lost. You could have lost more but you still lost

In what world is this a loss? It's a 2nd TWO YEARS FROM NOW. Anything can happen and it's very possible to acquire a 2nd along the way. And the 1st this year is a) pointless to us since we don't need to pick and b) pointless in the sense that it's a a very weak draft.

We get rid of a bad contact and keep all of our players that we can use for trades all at the cost of a 1st, because that's really the only thing of great value here.

Losing a big contract, a 1st this year, a 2nd in 2 years and a nobody prospect to keep De Haan, Nelson or Strome? Why is it a bad deal?

Losing a 1st and a 2nd to keep de Haan, Nelson, or Strome isn't a huge win. None of those guys are anything special. Grabovski only had 1 year left and is probably going on the LTIR anyways.

I don't get why some people are celebrating lol

I'd rather have CDH, Strome or Nelson than the 15th overall pick in a weak draft. Regardless, it leaves the Islanders with pieces that they can trade, and it relieves cap space.

Again, they could have protected De Haan and expose Pelech instead. In any event, it's not that bad of a deal.

I honestly don't think this is so bad for the Islanders.

They keep all of their important players and the only really valuable piece they lose is the 2017 1st.

They could have just protected De Haan and let Vegas take Pelech, Strome or Nelson.

would have been smarter but I think the 5 million they save for Grabovski is what they paid for. Protect the asset you want and save a bunch of cash.

Let's see what happens this week. Possible that pelech was protected as part of an upcoming trade but if not yeah I don't get it

Nelson, Strome, and De Haan all have more value than a middle first, second round pick, and irrelevant prospect.

More importantly, if your plan is to trade someone off the current roster you need to retain the others. You can't lose De Haan and trade Hamonic, for example.

This is a very good trade for the NYI, and I approve.

A mid-first, one of the Isles' lower end D-prospects, and what could very well be pick 55-60 two years from now to keep their roster (and trade chips) intact and gain 5 million in cap space

That's not a loss. Not as big a win as I was hoping based on the initial reports. But nowhere near a loss

For sure. The Isles are definitely loading up for a big deal.

Imo, Vegas would've chose Nelson. He's not the greatest player but a consistant 20+ goal scorer in his early 20's with a big body. I think you would be happy if the 15th overall pick turned out to do that so to me it's a wash.

those draft picks arent really all that valuable.
15th in a weak draft
a 2nd rounder 2 years away.
garth basically gave up a deadwood contract and a long shot prospect to keep his roster intact.
ive seen worse......

That is the thinking of a losing franchise.

Sure it hurts but every year teams throw away first rounders at the deadline and sometimes you win(Pittsburgh 2014 + Chicago 2015) and most the time you end with nothing

Wait until we see what he does with the space. If he adds two impact players, it was worth it. If he doesn't... well, he's screwed and probably trying to get max value for JT.

Then they lose Nelson.

You cross your fingers and hope the 15 overall becomes the consistent 20-25 goal scorer that Nelson is in 3 or 4 years. Chances are that player never becomes that good.

This trade is a big win for the Islanders given that they were in one of the roughest situations of all teams for this expansion draft. Anyone that types "LOL islanders" has no idea what's going on.

I guess everyone forgot that snow was giving up dehaan and a first to protect his forwards. Most isles are pretty happy with this deal as snow kept all his best which a few will be dealt soon.
