Great start, sure.

One of the greatest? Dear lord no. I don't think it's even close.

That market hasn't even really been tested. There have been no lean years, no rebuild. Will Vegas be a destination if their tourism dries up and economy tanks? Will fans stay loyal when they're dogshit for years after their current core ages out? Will they be able to stay competitive if the NHL clamps down on all the wyas they've abused the rule book?

Destination teams come and go in this league. Yes they are a destination right now. It's unrealistic to expect this will always be the case.

a huge part of their success came from catching a bunch of gm's with their pants down at the expansion draft. aside from that they made a few shrewd moves and they benefit from the vegas flu. can't deny their success though, they've done well with their opportunity.
You can't just pin their success on a draft that was taken place 9 years ago. They made moves to get players like Eichel, Hanifen, Stone, Marner, Hart and drafted players like Howden and Dorofeyov etc. Those are just smart decision making.

They probably won't have locals watching the games when they are bad since they will have NFL games to go to and other entertainments. But perhaps visiting fans will fill their arena and tourists that want to watch a hockey game. They will probably have their arena filled or more filled than some other places in US

I can't call them one of the greatest franchises, simply because they don't have the history of sustained success (how can they, I have shirts older than the team's expansion bid.) That said, they are the model I want all of my teams to learn to follow, because they are utterly ruthless in their pursuit of success. Nothing seems to influence their decision-making beyond "will this make the team better" and "is it technically legal, and if not, are we willing to pay the price for doing it anyway."

Not only the team plays with an edge, the whole franchise does. The fans seem to love it, i like what Vegas has built.

One of the best in the last decade for sure

Remind me of the Blackhawks from 2009-2017. Although the main difference being most of the Blackhawks stars were home-grown through amateur draft, Vegas’ stars were taken from trades, free agency, or expansion. Dorofeyev is the only one that they’ve drafted that I know of

I'd be more impressed if they had to deal with the same expansion draft rules that Minnesota and Columbus did.

Minnesota and Columbus had to choose from a smaller list of players AND had to split them, teams didn't have to protect any NTC players unless they wanted, so the pool was further diluted by bad contracts, AND the teams got a 3 year warning. Teams only got a one year warning with Vegas, which was further amplified by the laughable reversal on NTC players.

Vegas is the sports embodiment of the phrase "born on third base and acting like you hit a triple". Maybe closer to second base, but still a heavily privileged start.

And their owners also got in dirt cheap and apparently made no attempt to negotiate more favorable expansion rules as Foley did.
