Seattle had the exact same rules Vegas did.
Seattle had basically nothing to pick from by comparison and weren't offered compensation. Not too mention the idiotic NHL reasoning of why Vegas was exempt when there were so many teams in a worse state so essentially every team lost an asset except Vegas which only helps them.

Again how does your point prove that Oilers did not have luck in getting Gretzky? Also having luck that he became the great one?

Also Vegas are doing things in a 32 team league with parity and all the teams on even playing field when it comes to finances and the cap. It's not the 80s so comparing it to 2026 NHL is pretty dumb.
All teams are not on equal footing primarily because small market teams have to pay more and players can literally put them on a No trade list that Vegas will never have to worry about being on even if they are bad. While teams like the Sabres and Winnipeg are constantly denied even when they are good. Only people out of the loop consider that an even playing field.

Gotta take chances and do everything in your power to win a title..

Vegas coulda easily just kept doing their thing this year and inch along and owners keep making money but NO.. mccrimmon saw that the players needed a jolt and he brings in Torts. Unreal move to see that the players needed a Torts type coach to change things up

Florida had a good team with Huberdeau having huge point totals.. Zito says NOPE, this isn’t working and he trades him away and brings in Tkachuk and then we all saw the domination for back to back Cups.

Tampa loved being aggressive and doing their thing too and won Cups

Canes obviously haven’t won a Cup in years but they are obviously constantly making blockbusters(trading Necas, trading Rantanen etc) and they are in the finals

Waaaaaaaay too many gun shy GMs out there that don’t do everything they can to try to win. Too many GMs are happy with being mediocre and just sneak into the playoffs and consider that successful.

The big boys do everything they can to win

Vegas is the cream of the crop.. I can’t wait to see what’s up their sleeve over the next couple years when lots of cap starts opening up when high priced older guys come off the books. They will be making massive signings and continuing on with their domination
Excellent post. Bang on.

Envy ?

Expansion team in 2018 -- been to three cups, won one (so far). 8 playoff seasons out of 9 years.

What makes this MORE impressive is this is being done in a 32 team league with parity insurance (aka salary cap).

It is being done without any goofy or artificial enhancements (Montreal getting pick of the French Canadian litter, etc.)
Point #1 true

Point #2 true with qualifiers.
Small market teams with tax, climate and desirability issues that Vegas doesn’t have to deal with.
Stone didn’t even want to play in his hometown.

Point #3 False , the entry draft Vegas had was far different than when the WHA teams were accepted into the NHL

Vegas has a few advantages over small market and Canadian teams in particular,

So it's Vegas' fault that the other 30 teams were idiots and then suddenly wised up? And Vegas was exempt from the Seattle draft because they didn't get a cut of the expansion fees. Once again blame the other 30 teams and their owners for not wanting to lose money. If they had been a part of the draft Seattle would have had the opportunity to pick from the likes of Carrier/Dadonov/Martinez.

I don't care what a random website says. We are on HFBoards and using their system.

Type in colon, sarcasm, colon and see what appears in your post, where instead of actually spelling out the word colon you use the symbol :

I'll wait...

It’s just impossible for some rival fans to give Vegas credit. They constantly blame the NHL and act as though Vegas did some sort of secret witchcraft to make other GMs do a horrible job during the expansion draft….. even though at the time of the expansion draft, these same rival fans laughed and ridiculed at what Vegas did and assumed the team would be horrendous

The jealous rival fans know that Vegas is the cream of the crop when it comes to NHL franchises.. it’s just impossible for them to actually admit it. They see Vegas continually be a contender every year and it causes jealousy

That's not the fault of the league if your city isn't desireable. Even playing field means having cap so teams like maple leafs don't pay crappy superstars $20 million a year and effectively make the market for any good players inflated pricing out teams like Winnipeg or Buffalo. That's what I call an even playing field.

a huge part of their success came from catching a bunch of gm's with their pants down at the expansion draft. aside from that they made a few shrewd moves and they benefit from the vegas flu. can't deny their success though, they've done well with their opportunity.

People should revisit the expansion draft threads in the days following the draft before they are allowed to comment on the current team and how it was unfair.

The typical rubes will mention they didn't get any of the expansion money, but that was only like 20 million dollars a team.

The Vegas owner is worth almost 3 billion dollars. 20 million dollars is about 500 bucks to us regular people. It was dumb and is dumb.

Sure ....sometimes it can be
Even if Seattle picked literally the best possible options they couldn't of possibly matched Vegas it's dumb to even argue otherwise. I also don't care if Vegas didn't take money it's more reason to show that money matters more than anything.

3 Finals in first 9 seasons with one Cup and another on the way.
Knights are one smartly run franchise.

" dumb to even argue orherwise"

And yet nearly everybody predicted that Vegas would not succeed as a franchise and that it was totally stupid to put a hockey team in the desert, again
What’s the season ticket base, if you don’t mind me asking?
Reason I’m asking is your market is unique in the amount of tourists that can travel there to have fun and see their team on the road

I honestly don't know, but anecdotally it seems that somewhere between 1/4th to 1/3rd of the attendees on any given Knights are visitors.

The casinos resorts buy huge blocks of good tickets just to have them on hand for the suckers high rollers who want to see a game.

Then it's time to take away the choice players have? I'm down for it. Makes things much more fun.

The thing about Vegas is that for their early runs, if you looked at the roster it never looked that good, even though every year they did better than expected.

But you look at their roster today, and it's no wonder they're a good team. They did well out of the expansion draft, but they've done even better since to make it sustainable.
