The conversation I'd love to hear is how a previous draft list (doubt they'd reveal any lists from recent years) looked, how they came up with it and how they view it in retrospect. That would be a fascinating conversation.

Back in 05 I had the opportunity to talk to some of the people in charge of a few team's drafts and they didn't want to be quoted by name but they were very forthcoming. The most surprising interview I did was with Doug MacLean while he was GM of the BJ's. I was at a Memorial Cup game in London when Crosby was in his draft year. I saw MacLean and I went up and asked him if I could possibly do an interview some time. He told me to call his office the next week and we'd set something up. I didn't know what to expect but I called and he not only took the call, but called in his head of scouting and we spoke for an hour!

On the flipside, I arrived at the Buffalo airport on that trip (I was going to drive to London). I went to the luggage carousel and there 2 people there and one of them was Don Maloney (who was with the Rangers brass at the time). He was going to go to the Memorial Cup as well, but I think he was driving to Kitchener first. I tried to get an interview and he said it had to go through the Garden. I tried but they never agreed to an interview.

One more draft-related story: My son and I flew to Seattle and then drove to Vancouver. On the way back, we were walking through the Seattle airport and I walk by a middle-aged guy, blonde woman, and what looks like their son. They've all got on black warm up jackets with the Kings logo on them and my mind quickly starts putting 2 and 2 together. They must be a draft pick and his parents. Maybe Kaliyev. So I turn and half yell out "Arthur!" And the 2 grown-ups turn around and me and my son go over and I ask if Arthur will take a pic with my son? I told them we were bummed the Rangers didn't pick him and the mom frowns. "Us too." Too funny!
