I’ll have a little fun with this - which team wins?

Team 1:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Smyl - Linden - Bure
Courtnall - Ronning - Adams
Rota - Larionov - Fraser

Ohlund - Salo
Ehrhoff - Snepsts
Hamhuis - Babych

McLean

vs.

Team 2:

Naslund - Morrison - Bertuzzi
Mogilny - Pettersson - Tanti
Gradin - Kesler - Boeser
Gelinas - Sandstrom - Skriko

Jovanovski - Hughes
Bieksa - Lumme
Edler - Brown

Luongo

Think Team 1 is better by a good margin. However, goaltending makes a big difference. No knock on Kirk but goalies back then weren't on the same level as goalies now. Gun to my head though I'm still picking Team 1 given this is everyone at their best.

Need I remind folks that the legendary Pat Quinn and current wonder GM Jim Benning both patrolled the illustrious blue line of the Canucks? I suspect some of you may want to change things up a bit.

feel free to add in your coach and GM:

Hey guys,

Feel free to add in your GM and coach to your line-ups.

Brian Burke would be my GM, while Pat Quinn would be my coach.

Sedin - Sedin - Moginly - the rw that could finish the twins plays

Naslund - kesler - bertuzzi - not sure if this line would work with kes lack of playmaking but if naslund moves to more a playmaker then it woudl be great.

Burrows - Peca - malhotra 2 way line if peca counts that would shut players down

Torres - walker - Hansen

Ohlund-salo
Edler - tanev
Lynne-Aucoin

Luongo
Schneider

I clearly have a style of play I prefer lol.

GM: Mike Gillis (most successful gm)
AGM: Pat Quinn

coach: AV - this team could play AVs style.

I tried to put players (save for peca) in the position they played their role on the canucks

Waaaaay over there
I feel like I do this about once a year... and although it's early on Petey and Hughesy, screw it, I like 'em.

Sedins- Bure
Naslund - Pettersson - Mogilny
Gelinas - Linden - Bertuzzi
Schmautz - Kesler - Burrows

HM: Smyl

Ohlund - Hughes
Tanev - Jovo
Lumme - Edler

HM: Reinhart

McLean
Luongo

HM: Smith

Coach: Quinn
GM: Quinn

I kind of hate Bure with the Twins, because (IMHO) the Twins really needed a big front of net garbage goal scoring presence that they (and the Canucks) never really had... and Bure wasn't really a cycler, he needed a breakout pass guy on D like Brown... although I'm sure Hughes (or Reinhart) would do just fine. That said, any All-Time Canucks 1st line that doesn't have Bure on it is just wrong.

other than adding hughes almost as soon as he entered the league, my all time canucks team hasn’t changed in a long time. but man i think it’s time to change it.

mogilny pettersson bure
sedin sedin miller
naslund linden bertuzzi
burrows kesler smyl

hughes ohlund
hamhuis jovanovski
snepsts salo

luongo
demko

demko replaces mclean finally

petey’s datsyukian abilities make him the perfectred army style center between mogilny and bure (think: larionov or fedorov)

and i think i now have to have miller as the burrows with the sedins. i have never liked him but dialed in jtm would be great as an alex burrows puck retrieval hound: smart enough to play off the sedins, high enough motor and good enough defensively to get back and cover for them, and what you lose on the downgrade from burrows’ all time hockey iq and defensivel ability you get back with superior offence.

my only thing is i DO NOT trust a team with both jtm and bertuzzi on it. but if my coach and GM are big pat quinn, and tocch is an assistant, maybe that’s enough of a threat of taking them into the tunnel for fistfight to keep them in line

on d, hamhuis maximizes jovo like he did with casual kev, and you have to have salo for the slapshot on the pp. could have gone with several guys as to form a shutdown pair with salo: snepsts, my fav gerald diduck, or mitchell, who with salo briefly was the best canucks shutdown pair i’ve ever seen. but f*** willie mitchell. but if not for the slapshot i would have gone snepsts with diduck as my big snarly shutdown third pair

Admittedly did not favor the older rosters.

Mogilny - Miller - Bure
Naslund - Pettersson - Bertuzzi
Sedin - Sedin - Linden
Burrows - Kesler - Hansen

Hughes - Salo
Hamhuis - Jovanovski
Ohlund - Tanev

Luongo
Demko

Reasoning:
* The temptation may be to put Pettersson on the first line with the other top tier skill guys, but no other star Canuck can play the thankless Morrison defensive role better than he can while enhancing the WCE's offense and doing so without needing the puck all the time, IMO. Put Miller/prime Linden there and it'd be a defensive trainwreck. Put Kesler there and the other two wouldn't have the puck as often as you'd want them to (Kesler's puck hog/tunnel-vision tendencies do not suit their offensive game at all).
* I have always said that prime Linden was the perfect Sedin winger. He checks off every box. (honestly, a lot of star players as the Sedin Linemate probably wouldn't be as good of a fit as Burrows)
* I don't think a better shutdown line can be formed than the those three. Insane chemistry and relentlessness all over the ice.
* With Miller on the first line, you have a tenacious power-forward on every line instead of just unrealistic pure skill lines.
* Hamhuis is the perfect Jovanovski partner, can't get more stifling than Ohlund - Tanev
* Chose Salo to round out the D because it was the only way you got 4 top-tier PK specialists and 3 top-tier PP weapons that are all essential in their own way. Plus, could you imagine his 5-on-5 production with Hughes tilting the ice and feeding his bombs all day? I think Hughes style of play would keep him from being injured all the time, too. Was tempted to put Hronek here, but it's so hard to be confident in what level he's actually at.
