1) You are right, I use yahoo's boxscores and malhotra and lappy are back to back so i misaligned that one. However, he was still 65+% past 2 games.
2) Who is the player throwing hits and scoring? THAT'S WHAT I AM ASKING!?! Who is the player at that REASONABLE PRICE (Acquisition AND salary!!!) that you are going to acquire once we have our team fully healthy? Who are you going to trade for that will do that much of a better job than Manny? Manny is still one of our top faceoff men and PKers and yes, that is still valuable to the team.
If the team is fully back you don't need to replace him
Go
Sedin - Kassian
Booth Kesler Burrows
Raymond Schroeder Higgins
Weise LaPierre Volpatti
Here you can go roll 4 lines without the continual chaos of trying to hustle Manny off on on the ice
Beyond that, what is valuable here is the cap space you get by shedding Malhothra's bloated contract. With that you can pick up a player at the deadline that can actually hep the team There will solid wingers available for draft choices as many other teams look to rebuild that can be picked up if we don't use up so much space with Malhotra. So if you want the reasonable replacement the best avenue is to dump Malhotra. By retaining him you negate that possibility. Got to get the chicken before the egg here.
And yes Malhotra's contract is among the worst in the League.. Watch him play. He has no offensive skill. None. He has no physical component to his play. No one throws more snow than Malhotra or has less contact. His PK is barely adequate as he gets no up ice pressure and won't block shots. Seems, in fact , to lack stamina on the PK and really lags if he has to spend any length of time on it. And he is getting 2.5 for this absolutely marginal (and that's being charitable) contribution.
All you Malhotra apologists cling to is that he can win faceoffs. But with the new rules not allowing you use glove to sweep away the puck. (Malhotra's favorite gimmick) there is a every possibility that even here Malhotra will begin to fade.
In the end, people cling to corsi ratings, specialist talk, situational use, etc.. to justify a player I guess they feel some affection to. In reality , all you have to do is watch him play to see his ineffectiveness. I believe the tide is starting to turn and many here and elsewhere are willing to agree he is simply no good. He had a terrible season last year which was explained away a dozen to Sunday (lack of an off season, restrained play because of eye concerns, bad coaching by AV) Yet he has started this season just as ineffectively and with the same tentativeness. Yet there will always be there those sentimentalist who don't really regard Malhotra in a hockey sense but who love the story and want to believe what they want to believe no matter how contrived it is.
To me anyone suggesting that we bring back Malhotra next year needs to give their head a shake.
