Confirmed with Link: Vanacek to Florida Panthers for Giles

I agree. I'm hoping this sort of deal is designed to have Giles play in Kunin's place when he is dealt...at least in terms of roster spot. After tomorrow's game, I'm hoping the lines end up being something along the lines of...

Eklund-Wennberg-Toffoli
Zetterlund-Celebrini-Smith
Kovalenko-Dellandrea-Graf
Kostin-Goodrow-Grundstrom

Yeah, it sucks and Giles can probably get in for Grundstrom or Kostin but it's moving the team forward.
Boy we are anemic on top 6 centers. I wish we could slot Wennberg on the 3rd line where he is best suited. We really need a top 6 center. If we don’t get Schaefer, I. Really hope we get Misa.

I still have faith in Smith becoming a 2C and if that happens then we're actually in pretty good shape.

I also think it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep Nico around as 4C.

I would agree on the sturm call. He is a great 4th liner. Not for any kind of real money, but like 3 years, 4.5M type deal.

Goodrow, Kunin, and Dyllandrea are such a dumpster fire, its amazing that they are still on the ice. When you are bottom 6 forward with limited ice time and you are -20 or worse, it speaks volumes. -29, -24, and -20 respectively. I dont see how them on the ice helps the team???

Compare to sturm who is only -4 and pitches in offensively too (he has the same point totals as Dyll and goodie combined in fewer games and far less TOI. I would be very happy to keep him...I also got a chance to meet him, and hes a really gracious, great guy! I think hes a solid locker room presence.

He’s among the league leaders in faceoff percentage and that alone is immensely valuable for a team that struggles getting out of their own zone.

As for the trade, and I think two simple ideas:

1. Its doing V a solid. Kinda like the burns deal. Giving vets good opportunities elsewhere even for zero return earns you good karma. It also shows that signing with SJ, even if the team struggles, does not stop you from having a chance to compete for the stanley cup, and that the GM has your back and understands you and wants to help you. Grier really did Blackwood a solid, and now vanecek. This can make it easier to sign guys over the summer.

2. Giles is big. I have mentioned the importance of size, and I think grier is trying to acquire big people. I doubt he ever makes any impact in the NHL, but he is big, so there is upside.

3. Vanecek had zero real value. In fact, given his moderately high salary and no retention slots, his value was potentially negative. As such, this was a zero for zero value trade. No biggy either way...

Sturm is the perfect TDL sell off piece. Riding an unsustainable 18.4% shooting percentage and only being entrusted with 10 mins of ice time a night on this dumpster fire of a team. Also been hurt every year he's been here.

Thank him for his time, get yourself a 3rd or 4th rounder (or add him to another deal for a singular asset that is better) and move on with it. $4.5M for a 4C is lunacy.

kinda feel this was a money saving move, not a cap saving move.

Saves about 800k in real dollars? I know the owners rich and all, but if you dont think he would like to save almost 1m for a guy who wasnt resigning and with the team this far out, idk.

But GMMG getting HIS GUY in Giles.

The more I think about it...perhaps saving Plattner real dollars was the biggest factor, with getting AHL support (especially after the post-deadline callups vitiates the Barracuda's depth). On one hand, saving money when you can is always prudent...but on the other hand, why is a multi-billionaire that cheap?

Seems like this is mainly just a favor to Vanecek and to Florida. I just wish we didn’t take back a guy with multiple years left on his deal.

It's one more year at the league minimum. Pretty much the least "multiple years left on the deal" that it can possibly be without being a FA at season's end.

If this somehow impacts anything else the Sharks want to do in a negative way then we have bigger problems.

as for the trade itself, meh. Vanacek likely had little to no value thanks to his injury and not great work with the Sharks. I'd guess this is more about doing a solid for a veteran while opening up the opportunity for Askarov to get some more run with the Sharks unless they plan on taking on another goalie in the next couple of days.

Giles himself feels like a nothing-burger crossed with depth insurance if Grier finds a taker for more than a couple of our bottom 6 pieces. Kunin and Sturm might be attractive and open up slots for Cardwell and some wild-card call up (Duerr? Bystedt?) then having someone like Giles who at least has gotten NHL games before isn't the worst thing in the world.

Right now the only real value Giles has is potentially as an opportunity for gifs. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer or, if you're feeling particularly literary, The Crucible.

Rich people are the cheapest people on the planet. They don't get rich by being less than absolutely tight-fistedly obsessive about their money.

Mike Grier - "More weight!"

I'm going to assume that a big part of this was simply opening up a spot for Askarov once he's healthy--which hopefully won't be that long. Sheng's note on that at the end of his trade piece was, "He’s back on the ice and is progressing, but he’s not quite ready to return to action."

So hopefully that means we can see Asky within one to two weeks, which leaves him about a month to split time (or better) with Georgiev and then go back to the Barracuda for the playoffs. Feels like this was something Grier always planned for as long as dealing one of the two veteran goalies was possible.

I don't think it's that he's cheap. We've always spent when we're contenders. Dude is literally paying almost $10M to have players not play for our team this year between Jones, Karlsson, Burns, and Hertl (and has done so for 3-4 years with varying amounts of money).

If there is money involved, it's probably simply that why spend money that gives you nothing in return? Hasso has also funded way more than our share of SAP Center renovations and maintenance as well. I don't think "Hasso is cheap" is a reasonable statement in any form or fashion.

Other than Giles being instantly the biggest wing in our system, I don't see the point in doing this deal. I'd rather have a defenseman or a mid round draft pick than another grinder forward.

It comes down to was Vanecek worth a mid round pick at $3.4M with below league average results the last 2 seasons (plus injuries)? I'm sure Grier would have liked a pick as well. Issue is there probably wasn't one being offered.

I feel like it's Christmas and I just opened my present to find out it's socks.

I'm gonna assume he meant the whole contract is 4.5 and not AAV.

Also, no one would be taking him on for his 7 goals so bringing up his shooting percentage as an unsustainable number is kinda pointless.

He's German. It's efficiency.

Worse. It's ankle socks.

It's even less likely he'd re-sign while taking a $500k a year pay cut while the cap has gone up $13M+ since he signed his current deal.

He or someone else also mentioned how he chips in offense well, so seemed pertinent.
