Lots of interesting moves. I hate losing Miller, and going forward with the lack of punch in our forward group. Hopefully they flip Chytil before he is a permanent fixture on the ltir. We have basically replaced Horvat and Miller, with Hronek and M Petterson. I expect this team to go all in for playoffs at the deadline again. They need a driving center, to get Boeser and DeBrusk scoring. Probably cost us all our draft picks to get one.

I do wonder if they’ll try to buy an underperformer like Cozens or Mittelstadt on the cheap. I don’t really like either player, but if they’re relatively cheap I could see it. Or use the new salary space on some other upside salary dump.

" So Miller, Heinen, Desharnais, Brannstrom, Fernstrom, and Dorrington for Pettersson, Chytil, O’Connor and Mancini.

Dorrington is a low-end prospect filler so let’s take him out. Brannstrom had already been waived. Heinen and Desharnais are depth bodies each with an additional year. I don’t view them as heavily negative assets but I do view their “loss” as flexibility creators.

Mancini and Fernstrom are both solid prospects. Mancini will help more immediately but Fernstrom is a guy to watch down the road…as I said before he’s still 18 and an SHL regular which is trending up for a guy who just got picked in the 3rd round. But let’s call that a wash form a pure asset value standpoint.

The meat of the deal in total is Miller for Pettersson, Chytil and O’Connor - with a presumption that some of the cap flexibility created will be used to help resign Pettersson (and maybe O’Connor).

So that’s an ultra solid #3 type defenseman with great size, a talented but often injured middle six center who has some theoretical top six upside and an interesting third line winger who occasionally can pop in a more middle six role for a very talented (and unhappy) first line star forward with a bajillion years left on his deal (albeit at a good AAV). "

This is a quality take that really takes into account what has really been lost and gained. After the Miller trade to the Rangers I was as unhappy as I've been with a Canucks trade in recent memory. But honestly, after the 1st got moved for M. Pettersson, I'm feeling SO much better about it. That's the player we've been needing. That's the player that is going to shore up the defence. The defence not working right has been the main cause of a lot of this teams issues, even including it's scoring woes. The forwards haven't been able to commit properly because they've been so nervous about odd man rushes and poor positional play by the D.

Yes, we now have a lack of center depth, but that can be solved WAAAY more easily than the defence issues. I don't think the Canucks made out like bandits or anything, because the best player in the whole thing is still obviously Miller, but I do feel a lot better about the return and what it means for the team going forward, and I haven't even gotten around to mentioning the cap space, which might be the most important part of all of these transactions.

But what is he worth? With the new cap projections (which I find difficult to believe will be accurate in 2 years time) what is a reasonable contract for him? I'd probably be ok with a 6x5.5 or maybe 6x6...but if he gets more than that its value is diminishing in a hurry.
I don’t know what’s the point of worrying when this management has a track record of giving out reasonably fair contracts.

I do wonder if they’ll try to buy an underperformer like Cozens or Mittelstadt on the cheap. I don’t really like either player, but if they’re relatively cheap I could see it. Or use the new salary space on some other upside salary dump.
if avs sells on Mittelstadt then they would want a 2C in return.

What a crazy day.

All comes down to whether they can lock him up to a reasonable contact. I'm assuming they did their homework as this could turn into the type of blunder to get you fired.

Plus side is we never have to watch Desharnais play another game. Hopefully it also puts Juulsen in the press box where he belongs.

If he gets extended, the defense starts to look pretty solid over the next couple seasons with Willander and EP2 likely cracking the roster.

It was pretty obvious they were never going to hold that pick, but I thought it would be longer than a few hours.

looking at my podcast app and seeing emergency miller trade podcasts that immediately became obsolete when the pettersson trade dropped

i’m still reeling, bring on the next shoe

Pens fan here.

His offensive potential is pretty limited. Playing with Sid he paced around 35 points a season if I remember correctly.

He is a big body who can move. His best asset is his forecheck and work down low. Does at times look like he has more offensive upside but it never comes. If you’re looking for a good 3rd line forechecker though he fits the bill perfectly.
So O'Connor is basically another Hoglander. I can live with that.

Well yes, but Canucks are now in a position to play third team in a deadline trade. If Avs bring in someone else they may need/want to dump. Just have to see what opportunities open up. Those were just examples.

Pens could’ve given permission. It’s not the first time JR has negotiated with his agent so given their history, I don’t think we should worry too much about it.

They could have asked for permission, but I’m assuming with the cap they’ve opened up (and the rising ceiling), they’ll just pay him.

Not if they insisted on getting permission to talk to Marcus prior to executing the deal. It doesn't sound like they did.
I'm guessing because Thomas specifically noted they didn't have negotiating rights that maybe Pittsburgh wasn't giving permission.

What does Boeser + a 1st get us? (in terms of offense)

i think optimum value for this is a high upside young player from a contender or a bubble team going all in to save its GM’s job

but imo boeser by himself can probably return that, or a 1st that we can re-flip.

maybe we package a 1st from someone with our own to get a proven young guy who can contribute now? but that would have to come from a bad team that wants to reset its rebuild and start from scratch.

but hard for me to see a destination that would where both rental boeser and our 1st are aligned as priority needs. not that there’s nobody who would want both, but for diminishing returns reasons those assets are probably better spent split up than packaged together.

Who is going to score goals?
You do realize JT has scored 3 goals since November 16th right?
And 2 of them were in 1 period in Montreal right?
23 games since he got back from his LOA. Who the f*** takes a LOA in the NHL?
Particularly coming from a guy with the attitude and pretensions JT has.
Guys a headcase, talented though. Good luck NY. No really i mean it.

It should be noted that Vilmer Alriksson has the same agent so if they really wanted to get a sense of what Pettersson is looking for, they could have easily got it.

There must have been an agreed upon extension in place or trading a 1st for a UFA doesn’t make any sense. ‪Canucks with a top 5 defence in the NHL now, going to be a lot of 2-1 grind em out type games lol ‬

There is a ton of soft tampering though. Canucks may not have directly spoken to his agent, but there are ways you can confirm, I directly, whether he was open to re-signing with Vancouver. With all the Swedes we have, it wouldn’t surprise me that he would.

This was fair value for the 60 point bitchy Miller, not the 100 point playoff warrior. And he's the 60 point guy this season.

I think management has a very good idea of what Pettersson's team is asking, but they're wisely saying they don't know because, you know, they're not supposed to know, legal like.
6x6 would be perfect. He should be a cornerstone for a while yet and he's the perfect partner for someone like Willander coming in.

With the rising cap I'd even go 7x6.

Once they get Willander (provided he seamlessly transitions in) it'll look like this:

Hughes - Hronek
Willander - M. Pettersson
Soucy - Myers

Forbort
E. Pettersson

Much, much better than what we've seen this season so far.

I'm (unrealistically) hoping for less but you may be right with that figure and contract length.

That is my problem yesterday, this whole feud thing blowing up this year, in the same year that both decide to stop playing because they cant stand each other. auto tanking both their values when they need to be sold. If it was kept under wraps, and Allvin traded Miller on the DL earlier, you will get 100pt playoff warrior value. Instead, the franchise has to sell their 3rd best asset at the lowest ebb of his tenure here.

But I cannot blame Allvin much. The guy has proven to be tireless, and really on top of things. Its not like he leaked the feud out, its Miller taking his LOA that caused the media to dig into the trash. I honestly blame our predatory media, I dont know how you can run a business with them blaring all the dirt out to the hockey world first sign it shows up. Mostly though, I blame EP and Miller dividing the room (remember "RIFT!!!"?) Its on both these millionaire babies, and also on Tocchet throwing his hands up with an on-paper playoff team.

I think Allvin did the best he could, and I understand the need for JR to do the Mason interview now, looking at this end result after both trades. MP is basically the only solidly top4 D that is actually available early, he has a better than good chance to resign and contribute. I'm quite high on him, and its pretty obvious how he could fit into this room from as early as last season. and if the team craters, Im sure he can be recycled into a first before TDL.

This trade is a good sign, Allvin showed that he will fix his mistakes. Batting better than .500 is not so bad. Lankinen was the best signing in the off season, Debrusk came as advertised, streaky as hell, but a good player, and Sherwood is a gem. Jury is still out on Forbot if he can stay healthy. O'Connor should be an upgrade on Heinan. That first was never meant to be kept like most of us armchair GMs wanted. Management's role with Hughes playing like a 25 year old Hart candidate is to support the captain, compete right now and keep him happy here.

As a fan of this team since the Bure days, coming out of last year thinking we are legit building up to a cup contender after the Benning years, this is an incredibly dissappointing turn of events OUT OF THE BLUE. This tarnishes both Miller's and Pettersson's legacy here for me. EP seriously better mature, step up and return to 90+ point Selke form, or this whole saga will go down as "The most Canuck thing ever" in the history books.

I think we also needed the applecart to be upset and restocked ... I think the other major part of this is the change in team dynamics. Hopefully 1 - 2 of out prospects start to flourish when they get a chance out of this. Last year Dakota and Hoggy stepped up. This year its Sherwood...

Anyhow, I am looking forward to EP being more relaxed, think it will make a big difference.

I blame our predatory media

This will never not be hilarious to me. Our local media was so far hands off in this and it was the national media that dragged it to the forefront. And then our own front office who joined in keeping it there.

But damn Jeff Paterson to hell, may he take Thomas, Patrick, Harman, and IRF with him. And don't even get me started on that scoundrel, Iain Macintyre.

So O'Connor is basically another Hoglander. I can live with that.

O'Connor is a reliable defensive player and a very coach-friendly/systems-oriented guy which is the opposite of Hoglander. I'm struggling a bit for comparisons but he's maybe like a bit less-skilled Warren Foegele.

He's always popped to me as a guy who is all over the place in terms of working hard and winning puck battles but doesn't necessarily have the skill or hands to turn that into production. Very good 3rd liner though.
