Peens unhappy.

Last time they gave up a pick like that in a trade they got a legitimate top 3D.

Zadorov wasn’t/isn’t as good as Marcus Pettersson but they paid a 3rd.

Just feels like they could have done better here idk. I think it makes the optics of everything worse too.

Leverage is pretty bad unless they already spoke to his agent with permission from the Pens. They can basically demand whatever they want and we have to pay it otherwise this looks horrific.
That was my feeling last night too, but I’ve come around on it as a wait and see.

Pettersson is really good so no concerns there, but the age / UFA aspect I didn’t love.

But who knows what else the team would have been able to do over the next six months. They desperately needed a number 3 LS defenceman.

Looking at the UFA market the only other LHD at Pettersson’s level are Gavrikov and Chychrun and neither is going anywhere at the deadline. And they probably aren’t making it to UFA either.

While it would have been nice to try to pull off a deal like the Hronek trade (or either of the Marino trades) in the offseason, with the cap going up and parity what it is there are like 3-4 teams that might give up a player like that and I don’t see any great fits either. Maybe Walman in San Jose?

This feels like one we can really only judge with hindsight to see if management got the market dynamics right, both in terms of getting Pettersson re-signed and how the market develops more broadly.

What makes you we could have. Stop acting like we are the only nhl team out there.
I guess we get to start negotiations early. Are we going to offer him 8 years?

Those are the only two benefits of having his rights for this season.

edit. Oh. And the benefit of having for the cup run this year obviously.

Reading the Pens forum, those guys have no idea what they're getting in Desharnais. We fleeced 'em good and hard on including him.

We gave up a solid 1st and a decent prospect in Fernstrom. I think declaring victory, especially without a Pettersson extension in place yet, is a bit premature.

I do think getting out from under Desharnais’ deal is good work. It just didn’t work. I wasn’t as down on Heinen as some were, but clearly the Canucks felt it wasn’t working and decided to move on. Moving out a few multi year, multi million dollar deals for a pair of pending UFAs gives us a bit of cap flexibility. But again, this deal hinges on us locking up Pettersson. He’s a great fit and fills a huge need, and hopefully Allvin and Rutherford have done their due diligence on what it will take to extend him.

A 1st round pick that is projected to be a mid 1st round pick (14-17) is more than what is usually paid for a rental top 4 defensive Dman. Take the 1st we traded to Calgary for Lindholm. That was the 28th overall pick. In order for a team to move up from #28 to 17th in the draft, a team would almost certainly give up more than the value of a 2nd round pick as a 2nd round pick. Hanifin, who is younger and better more valuable than Old D-Petey essentially returned a late 1st, 3rd, and bottom pairing defenseman. The Rangers' pick is worth more.

As much as the Hronek trade has worked out, we paid a premium to acquire him but was RFA age. We basically paid a slightly lesser price to acquire Old D-Petey.
Hanafin’s agent was telling everyone he was only willing to sign in like a couple of cities and that limited his value greatly.

Hughes seemed in discomfort from a hit to the back. I don't think it was his hand.

One thing I forgot to say: This is like getting two players if M. Pettersson can right Hronek. On the other hand, it's like losing two players if Boeser falls off due to losing Miller.

Interesting times.
Ya, I think it was when Dandanov hit him behind the Canucks goal line.

Ya, I think everyone is correct in thinking that they probably overpaid for Pettersson. But with that said, a lot depends on the perceived value of the NYR pick. It’s reportedly a weak draft, and I don’t think teams perceive NYR in the same way the NYI were perceived when we traded Horvat. So I think some are probably overrating the pick value.

People are also forgetting that we dumped Desharnais, and to a lesser extent, Heinen. And getting out from these contracts is good.

Pettersson is a good target. But he does seem a bit on the older side. But with that said, the reality is that this team is trying to compete over the next 3-5 years, and that’s his 29-34 seasons, so age isn’t a huge concern, but there is a risk he drops off.

And agreed on the hindsight comment. Although i think the exact terms of an extension are less important in that it would be an unmitigated disaster if he isn’t re-signed.

But for me, the bigger hindsight judgement, which is perhaps overly obvious, is just how this management does on the compete now! path. Because it almost goes without saying that this move will largely be judged based on whether the Canucks are competitive and make the playoffs (at least predominantly) over the next 3-5 years. Because if they fail to be competitive it won’t matter if MP is good, or we extend him at a good rate, the deal will be a failure. And almost all of their coming moves will be judged in this lense. Because they’ve forgone (whether willingly or not) a retool or rebuild.

Personally, I’m not overly optimistic. I feel like I’ve seen this movie before (Benning, Nonis). It’s very difficult to successfully make a bunch of compete now! moves that actually result in a contending team. And I don’t really love Alvin and JR’s most recent record in Pittsburg in trying to accomplish this.

Yes another Pettersson! Exactly like I wanted!

Seriously this is a d-man I was confident they were targeting. I hope they get him extended because if they do then these deals have balanced the team I think.

This has been disproved by Zadorov and JR himself. Canucks gave him the dollars and term he wanted, they matched every request Z had. In the end Zadorov just wanted to play in Boston.
That and Pettersson is a much, much better D-man. Much better.

heh, Jimmy Rutherford did us a *HUGE* favor in taking NoGoodBranSuck off our hands when he was the GM for the Pens (and actually giving us a decent servicable player in return).

They think they're getting a big nasty defender with edge.
They just need to sign Christian!

To an extent, they have. But we also just lost an 80-100 point centre on an already anemic offensive team while replacing him with a 50ish point centre.

Unfortunately, I think we are in for some very low event and boring hockey.

What's the guess boys. 6 x 6 be enough for MP?

The D is set for years, if we can find the money for Hughes.

Hughes Hronek MP with Soucy and Myers for a couple of years, with Willander EP2 Mancini and Mynio up and coming.

Edit - and to some extent Forbort has been playing ok recently as well.

were 1pt out of a playoff spot. 2 pts back of 3rd in the division.

we have a #1 c, #1 d, and #1 goalie. we also have a ton of cap flexibility now to support the core.

what do you expect them to do? Tank?
Who is the #1 goalie? Lankinen is okay I guess, definitely exceeding his contract but absolutely a stretch to call him a #1. Demko is nowhere near a #1 currently.

But if that center was bringing down the room and other performances it could also be a wash. And quite frankly they need to play boring low event hockey. Demko has not been good. Lankinen solid but not otherworldly or anything. And who knows now you have 3 d-men that are actually top4 guys and a Myers who is a 4/5. The Canucks should have the puck more and be able to transition better.
