Hughes seemed in discomfort from a hit to the back. I don't think it was his hand.
One thing I forgot to say: This is like getting two players if M. Pettersson can right Hronek. On the other hand, it's like losing two players if Boeser falls off due to losing Miller.
Interesting times.
Ya, I think it was when Dandanov hit him behind the Canucks goal line.
That was my feeling last night too, but I’ve come around on it as a wait and see.
Pettersson is really good so no concerns there, but the age / UFA aspect I didn’t love.
But who knows what else the team would have been able to do over the next six months. They desperately needed a number 3 LS defenceman.
Looking at the UFA market the only other LHD at Pettersson’s level are Gavrikov and Chychrun and neither is going anywhere at the deadline. And they probably aren’t making it to UFA either.
While it would have been nice to try to pull off a deal like the Hronek trade (or either of the Marino trades) in the offseason, with the cap going up and parity what it is there are like 3-4 teams that might give up a player like that and I don’t see any great fits either. Maybe Walman in San Jose?
This feels like one we can really only judge with hindsight to see if management got the market dynamics right, both in terms of getting Pettersson re-signed and how the market develops more broadly.
Ya, I think everyone is correct in thinking that they probably overpaid for Pettersson. But with that said, a lot depends on the perceived value of the NYR pick. It’s reportedly a weak draft, and I don’t think teams perceive NYR in the same way the NYI were perceived when we traded Horvat. So I think some are probably overrating the pick value.
People are also forgetting that we dumped Desharnais, and to a lesser extent, Heinen. And getting out from these contracts is good.
Pettersson is a good target. But he does seem a bit on the older side. But with that said, the reality is that this team is trying to compete over the next 3-5 years, and that’s his 29-34 seasons, so age isn’t a huge concern, but there is a risk he drops off.
And agreed on the hindsight comment. Although i think the exact terms of an extension are less important in that it would be an unmitigated disaster if he isn’t re-signed.
But for me, the bigger hindsight judgement, which is perhaps overly obvious, is just how this management does on the compete now! path. Because it almost goes without saying that this move will largely be judged based on whether the Canucks are competitive and make the playoffs (at least predominantly) over the next 3-5 years. Because if they fail to be competitive it won’t matter if MP is good, or we extend him at a good rate, the deal will be a failure. And almost all of their coming moves will be judged in this lense. Because they’ve forgone (whether willingly or not) a retool or rebuild.
Personally, I’m not overly optimistic. I feel like I’ve seen this movie before (Benning, Nonis). It’s very difficult to successfully make a bunch of compete now! moves that actually result in a contending team. And I don’t really love Alvin and JR’s most recent record in Pittsburg in trying to accomplish this.
