I think there's a huge difference between "staying the course" and tanking. Teams that are 1 point out of a playoff spot and haven't looked anything like a contender the entire season usually either bolster their lineup by trading the equivalent of a 2nd and or 3rd round pick to push for the playoffs or sell their pending UFAs. Definitely don't push all your chips in.

As for what we have, right now I don't think we can say we have a #1C and a #1 goalie unfortunately. Things can change quickly but right now it definitely doesn't look like it's our year. Plus I don't think there are any teams that have struggled the way we have that go onto win a Cup without a coaching change.

I'm not particularly happy with them right now, but Cole, Suter, and Blueger were clearly also good UFA signings.

One thing you have to say about this management group--when they make a mistake with a guy and a contract, they move on in a hurry.

This year, they traded for, or signed Desharnais, Heinen and Brannstrom, and they were all cleaned out in this deal. They dumped Mikheyev and Kuzmenko last season, and let Lindholm walk.

And if they can't get anything done on a contract before the TDL with Boeser, he's the next guy to exit. And I suspect they're actively trying to get out from under the last year of Soucy's contract.

I don't think 'Trader Jim' is nearly done. More bodies coming and going for sure.

We'll see how it ends up but the Rangers pick reminds me of when we temporarily had the Isles 1st and people were contemplating a potential top 12 pick.

The Rangers have been a good team for a long time now but had a terrible to the season. They've been picking it up recently though, 6-2-2 in their last 10, so maybe it's just a hot streak or maybe they've sorted things out. Now with a boost from Miller, they should be the best bet to separate from the log jam and claim a playoff spot.

That Rangers win streak you mentioned has passed. They have 2W and 3L in the last 5 games with 2 consecutive L in the last 2 games.

I was a big fan of both Desharnais and heinen just three months ago, both have been mostly complete garbage. Painful to watch. Like juulsen, but more than twice as expensive.

3petey (&O'Conner) is not, he's extremely solid defensemen, top three at worst, basically in his prime and a colossal upgrade, instantly our second best defensemen. Plus more speed and size and offensive ability in every addition.

I disagree. The Rangers pick is likely going to be ~14-17 in 2025 or an unprotected in 2026. The Rangers aren't a team on the rise simply by adding Miller at least not in the next year or so. These days, top 15ish picks are rarely traded at the draft unless it's to trade down. You certainly don't see that type of pick traded for a player in his late 20s or early 30s. I don't know if it's because teams value the draft pick too highly or teams value the player too highly. I suspect that it is the former.

I've mentioned this here previously in this thread or elsewhere. If you look at the trades for Top 4 Dman, the price we paid for Hronek really stands out. You'll be hard pressed to come up with a recent comparable. Any comparable you find you'll probably see him as a 1st pairing Dman that you would have loved to have on the Canucks.

I like Old D-Petey, but realistically he's a guy you acquire for a late 1st round pick or even 2nd +. I believe that's what Pens fans were hoping for in a trade.

I think it's telling that when we made the Horvat and later Hronek trade, there were significant number of Canucks and Islanders/Red Wings fans who questioned the trade. But here, we have a significan tnumber of Canucks fans who dislike the return and Rangers/Penguins fans who love the trade. Like when the Hronek trade happened I can go on the Red Wings board and read comments about how the Red Wings would be needing a Dman like Hronek in a few years. I haven't read many Rangers and Penguins fans saying it's a terrible trade.

Honestly very please with how these trades turned out. People keep talking about just the players that we've already got, but with all the cap space we've given ourselves, that's going to bring in more solid players as well.

Whether they attain those assets this year, or wait until next year to bring in some top quality players, either way, once the moves are finished (by spending that cap space) I think we're going to be a much better team than before these moves.

His offensive potential is pretty limited. Playing with Sid he paced around 35 points a season if I remember correctly.

He is a big body who can move. His best asset is his forecheck and work down low. Does at times look like he has more offensive upside but it never comes. If you’re looking for a good 3rd line forechecker though he fits the bill perfectly.

If Mettersson doesn’t re-sign, this is an atrocious, desperation type of deal that management deserves to be raked over the coals for making…

But, I’m assuming that they know what the players ask is, and that he’d be happy playing/living in Canada.

With the increasing salary cap, he will sign for significantly more than Zadorov did this past offseason (especially now with the leverage his side has in negotiations) and everyone here will freak out that it’s way too much money…

With him re-signed though, we addressed a glaring need: we had to get Quinn Hughes some help on d.

I'm not a fan of this move, but I suppose we were never actually gonna be patient were we? I had a gut feel that management decided, after whatever drama caused Miller's break from the team, that since they needed another big move on the defence anyway, they could trade Miller and get the resources to do just that whilst settling the while Miller issue. So obviously my gut feel remains unchanged on that front given all this. I just can't believe we couldn't even use own pick to do it...

there doesn't seem to be any reason to be concerned at Pettersson re-signing. It's just a matter of how much we overpay...

Couple years ago when O'Connor went to the world championships. I distinctly remember him playing on a line with Conor Garland. They had some real chemistry in 10 games they played together. I wanted to find out if they could play together in the NHL for a while now. O'Connor is similar to Joshua who Garland has had success with in the past.

This management group like many before them in Van are very short term thinkers. The window is now and they aren't close. So why are they pretending like they are.

He´s already better that Petterson who absolutely sucks, now that he is free of 3rd line role i can see him as 80 point center, his stats per 60 are comparable to Panarin, just hope he stays healthy, way better player than Kakko and its not even close. Canucks finally have their 1C in Chytil.
