We're gonna overspend on defense again, aren't we? The problem is only going to get worse if we don't make another trade.

Also I think more is still to come. We're committed now, we have to spend another 1st.
It’s difficult. I think I’d walk into a meeting and demand Severson’s deal at minimum if I’m his agent.

Separate note, giving up a prime asset here means that you’re in a tough spot to try and make the forward improvements they need.

Even if we punted on this season and were looking towards next season w Willander, they need to pull two elite forwards while keeping their current talent. I have no idea how they do that.

We'll see how it ends up but the Rangers pick reminds me of when we temporarily had the Isles 1st and people were contemplating a potential top 12 pick.

The Rangers have been a good team for a long time now but had a terrible to the season. They've been picking it up recently though, 6-2-2 in their last 10, so maybe it's just a hot streak or maybe they've sorted things out. Now with a boost from Miller, they should be the best bet to separate from the log jam and claim a playoff spot.

Probably try hard to go after guys like Ehlers, Bennett and Mangiapange.

I dont think they are elite, but theres no other options.

Just be strong down the middle. If you are going to underspend anywhere, for the love of god make it the wings. The rest I all concur.

He has 709 hits in 491 games, ever time I watch him, he's involved physically around the net and good at protecting the front of the net.

I wouldn't call him a great fighter, but he's still willing, He's fought Deslauriers, Nurse, S. Bennett, Tom Wilson.

Not too many canucks are tough enough to fight Wilson.

If we had to nitpick his transition game is probably his weakness, but pair him up with say Hronek can work well.

He's timing in his defensive zone is good, seen him time a lot of blocks and stick checks well.

Last season, I thought he also improved his offensive zone game, was able to hold the puck better on the blueline. He's not an offensive dman.

All in all, team guy that should be a strong #4, pair him up with Hronek who is more offensively gifted and potentially that's a good 2nd pairing in the NHL. Should be an upgrade on Soucy.

If Willander hits, him and Hughes can potentially be another pair.
Hits are a stupid stat. Just take Pens fans word for it that he’s not physically heavy and isn’t great at protecting the net- he usually (until this season) made up for it in other ways. He will fight once in a blue moon.

This is what I'm struggling with. I knew it was going to get spent but I thought it would have been like the Hronek trade. Didn't expect them to use it to get rid of two bad contracts with term and add two UFAs.

I think this was always pie-in-the-sky. Hronek-like trades just don't happen.

With a reasonable extension for Pettersson, I don't think they could have done much better than Petey3. At least, before the trade deadline.

The Miller one I expected, this one....stings.

It's a bit like shuffling deck chairs, but M. Pettersson is good enough to potentially level the effect of losing Miller. He's that good. (Assuming he re-signs)

He's better than Hronek. Now, Pettersson-Hronek can take on the secondary minutes.

We all knew they would flip the pick. I'm glad it was this target vs some of the other names mentioned.

I didn't get to watch the game, but if Hughes aggravated his hand, we dodged a massive f***ing bullet. If he's out for awhile, we are mega f***ed as a franchise.

For the love of God DO NOT let him do the 4 Nations f***ing farce

Hughes seemed in discomfort from a hit to the back. I don't think it was his hand.

One thing I forgot to say: This is like getting two players if M. Pettersson can right Hronek. On the other hand, it's like losing two players if Boeser falls off due to losing Miller.

Interesting times.

Boeser's a smart enough player that he'd develop chemistry with a cardboard cutout of a hockey player in the ready-for-pass stance and bounce like 20 off it if remote-controlled players were allowed.

You could try Petey with Boeser, but that's a powerplay pairing not a 5v5 one. I hope the third guy is fast and big like Joshua was last year.

I like both players but the fact that both are pending UFA’s due for raises is annoying

Also think we need to relax with the “look at all this cap space next year” posts

They don’t make this trade if they don’t plan on paying both of these players, especially Pettersson

I’ll get excited about cap space if Boeser gets traded for futures

I do like Chytil(when healthy), Pettersson and O’Connor as players but it’s hard to look at the net haul today and get excited lol

Marcus Pettersson 2024-25' + Penguins ranks:

55.27% xGF (2nd)
53.95% Scoring Chance For (2nd)
59.26% High Danger Scoring Chances For (2nd)
Started 17.7% of shifts in the Defensive Zone (1st)

Most Common DPartner: Erik Karlsson (464:00 TOI)

Pettersson xGF% with EK65: 56.62%
EK65 xGF% without Pettersson: 47.15%
Pettersson xGF without EK65: 53.3%

The #Canucks are getting a very strong #2LD

Lets do some research before calling 3Petey a #4.

They've done this Kuzmenko, Mikheyev and now Desharnais and Heinen. So I guess a) the pro-scouting isn't as great as some posters make out however b) they are quick to correct their mistakes. Only issue is that they give out...ahem....sweeteners when they do so.

They take swings and miss and correct those misses promptly and efficiently and ppl still complain.

i actually think i hate this the most of all the moves allvin has made

pettersson is okay and will help the blueline but he's already breaking down at 28 and i think extending him is probably not the best use of the cap space. drew o'connor is fine but another 3rd/4th liner isn't really what this team needs. i get that they had to pay to get rid of heinen and desharnais but i really really think they could have used the rangers pick to much better effect

Tell us about it.

There should be a rule that ppl can’t complain about what Allvin does with a player without including what you would do instead.

Yep.

They chose a INSANELY narrow path to try to walk when they pushed straight ahead when they got there instead of taking a year or two to step back and accumulate assets.
Don't think 2 years of accumulating assets is an option if you want to keep your future HOF dman on board.

There's really no easy path here. Even Rutherford admitted it.

All we've heard about this year is that every top 4 D on the market costs a 1st+, the Canucks just got the best one out there and dumped two dog shit players in the process, both of whom had term.

The intention is clearly to sign MP long term.
I don't think you can overspend on good defensemen anymore. These are the prices now. You have to jump the market otherwise you're left with Deharnais when the music stops. Expansion has just spread the talent too thin.

Like, what's the other option? 7x7 for for 30 year old Brandon Montour? That 5x6 for Zadarov was gross. What Vegas did to get Hannifin was costly but they spent it on the right commodity.

I'm not sure how I feel about this deal. Hopefully he's signed quick and I guess they can trade him by the deadline if we can't.

Something's bugging me but it's not the player. No complaints about Petterson and LSD is a big need and he's a very good fix, hopefully he can last the 6 or 7 years he's going to get.

Young top 4D aren’t available for rental prices. You trade for them for like a 2C or 1W. We don’t have the assets for that type of trades.
The most realistic ones are getting a Guentzel type player or top4 UFA D and then try to sign another UFA in July.

A 1st round pick that is projected to be a mid 1st round pick (14-17) is more than what is usually paid for a rental top 4 defensive Dman. Take the 1st we traded to Calgary for Lindholm. That was the 28th overall pick. In order for a team to move up from #28 to 17th in the draft, a team would almost certainly give up more than the value of a 2nd round pick as a 2nd round pick. Hanifin, who is younger and better more valuable than Old D-Petey essentially returned a late 1st, 3rd, and bottom pairing defenseman. The Rangers' pick is worth more.

As much as the Hronek trade has worked out, we paid a premium to acquire him but was RFA age. We basically paid a slightly lesser price to acquire Old D-Petey.

Just chill, have some bc greenery and relax for a few more weeks, everything is going to be okay.
And if chytil can stay healthy, yes big if rn, he's got near ppg potential , ppl are sleeping on his skill level, plus speed and size.

Today was a good day.

Not trying to ruin the parade, I don't know anything about this guy...
But based on his career stats, he looks more like a 40 pt career kind of guy.

Idk who rob Williams is either but this is an awfully brain dead take, I'd be embarrassed to have posted something so stupid as a public figure of some sort, presumably.

He's going to sign, literally everything points to this, just have some patience for some weeks.

I was a big fan of both Desharnais and heinen just three months ago, both have been mostly complete garbage. Painful to watch. Like juulsen, but more than twice as expensive.

3petey (&O'Conner) is not, he's extremely solid defensemen, top three at worst, basically in his prime and a colossal upgrade, instantly our second best defensemen. Plus more speed and size and offensive ability in every addition.

Clown take robby.
