You knew they were gonna trade the first but figured they would atleast wait a day.

Miller was telegraphed to NYR.

Pettersson always seemed telegraphed to Van.

But Jesus. Having to pay so much to jettison Vinny and Heinen so early after signing is not a good look for the pro scouting department.

I always thought Hoglander and maybe Kud could have got a deal done but they had to overpay to get rid of contracts.

I understand it but I don’t like it.

Would have much rather rolled the dice on the Rags pick and used other assets to make the deal.

But this mgmt group clearly just wants to float and hope for the best.

Meanwhile, the team is likely worse and you are closer to Hughes out the door cause the team is no where near good enough.

Life as a Canucks fan.

Not gonna lie:

Hughes - Hronek
Pettersson - Willander
Pettersson - Myers

Looks like it might actually be a respectable defense group next year.

Forward group needs to major help, but I imagine they have to be chasing after a big FA in the summer like Ehlers.
I’m gonna need you to clarify which Pettersson is which.

There’s certainly cap space to sign now. But that’s two seasons in a row this front office has had to pay to get out of bad contracts they signed. This is their own undoing.
Yep.

They are doing a ton of work, some of it brilliant,(Lankinen / Soucy (last year) / Zadorov) and some of it just brutal (Heinen, Desharnais, Mikheyev)... and all this just to stay float as a middling playoff hopeful.

This trade isn't a straight 1st for Pettersson & O'Connor. It's also a salary dump of 4.25m in cap for this season, next season, and 2.25m for the season afterwards, two players familiar with management, and negotiating rights to those players. It's a little harder to evaluate than most trades like this. I would have expected Pettersson to get a 1st, although a late 1st (which this may ultimately become anyway), on his own. Given that expectation, getting the Penguins to take on bad cap with term and a useful player, even if he's disappointed this season, in O'Connor is a good piece of business.

it's not really tho. desharnais and heinen can both be sent to the ahl to save 2.3m per season. they're only saving a little under ~2m (in cap) this season and next. they also gave up a decent prospect in fernstrom

i also think the rangers are in really tough to convert the pick this year. the islanders, the red wings and the canadiens are all playing really good hockey and boston won't be easy to catch either. whoever of calgary and vancouver don't make the playoffs probably finish ahead of the rangers too and there's an outside shot of utah doing it as well

i think there was a really good chance of the rangers pick being a very high value asset this deadline or offseason and moving it for pettersson is some real short term thinking

I think the d core tremendously improved. all of a sudden if we can run

hugher hronek
peterson myers
peterson marcini
wilander

then we have the breathing room to let players like lekkermaki and hoglander find their game as top 6 players. without bleeding turnovers so much.

Also look at the cap space on top of the cap going up.

Think it is taking a step back to take two steps forward and hopefully weve seen the last of Julusen

Calm down.

Fine with it. We’re not in a position to be hoarding draft picks.

Would have preferred it to be for a younger player with more years of team control, though.

This is what I'm struggling with. I knew it was going to get spent but I thought it would have been like the Hronek trade. Didn't expect them to use it to get rid of two bad contracts with term and add two UFAs.
Kind of reeks of desperation. May work out, but don’t really like the process or risk.

Wow! Hockey DB lists Marcus Pettersson at 6'5" and 178......be must be built like a beanpole. But he's another left-shot d-man, so who do they pair him with--Hronek maybe?

I was going to dispute those numbers but...Elite Prospects has him at 6'4'' 176lbs so yup, he's very tall and slim. He gets knocked around a lot.

I was thinking about NYR's chance to miss: They have a 36% chance to make the playoffs at present (Dom's model). The pick is top13 protected. That leaves 3 spots of variance. Meaning, VAN absolutely should have moved their own pick instead...

That said, NYR will still go for it in 2026. Therefore, unlikely to burn the Canucks in the worst case scenario. But why do it if you don't have to?

Finally, them giving up Fernstrom in a bid to clear cap in a rising cap environment (which inflates away the risk of bad cap) is, well, typical for them. Death by a thousand cuts.

Edit: I do really like M. Pettersson though.

Drew O Connor is a player Ive wanted inexchange for Hoglander and I’m kind of pumped we got him. He’s got a lot of untapped potential and his size will be useful in our middle 6.

What does a Marcus Pettersson extension look like? 5x5M?

M. Pettersson's AAV should start with a 6. Most likely for at least 6 years.

Over the past three seasons, amongst defencemen with 2000+ minutes:

- score adjusted 5v5, Pettersson is 25th in relative xG%, between Carlson and Heiskanen.

- at even strength, Pettersson is 24th in assists/60, just behind Carlson, Faulk, Sergachev and Ekholm, and just ahead of Heiskanen.

Interesting. Didn't realize he was that good.

With the cap going up i think you're looking at something like 6x6. He's been underpaid relative to his performance too so I expect he'll want a long deal if he's foregoing free agency.

Someone else said this but I can't find the comment to quote.

But you easily could've done this deal at the beginning of the season (M. Pettersson has been on the trade block all year) by simply including your own 1st round pick.

We struggled in dozens and dozens of games with a horrific D-core, this trade alone would have us sitting in a playoff spot and maybe Pettersson and Miller don't end up in the same situation.

And even if you do end up trading Miller, you wouldn't be doing it from a position of weakness/desperation for a lacklustre return.
It was me, or I was one

The other thing to consider is that there's a decent chance the Canucks 1st rounder will be higher than the Rangers, and that can still be parlayed into a younger player with RFA rights/term. So yeah, we open up 4.25M on the books for next year to re-sign a (presumably) good defenseman or go big game hunting.

Peens unhappy.

Last time they gave up a pick like that in a trade they got a legitimate top 3D.

Zadorov wasn’t/isn’t as good as Marcus Pettersson but they paid a 3rd.

Just feels like they could have done better here idk. I think it makes the optics of everything worse too.

Leverage is pretty bad unless they already spoke to his agent with permission from the Pens. They can basically demand whatever they want and we have to pay it otherwise this looks horrific.
