Hughes-Myers is working pretty well
Pettersson_ Hronek in theory sounds good

The shift today has taken the Canucks from "on paper" to a team with holes on D to a team with holes on O. Add to that the likelihood that they will move Boeser if he won't sign.

They're clearly missing a 2C who can play high-leverage, matchup minutes & a play driving first line winger. Boeser is fine as a complimentary winger, but he's never been a guy who drives a line on his own, which is why I'm not surprised management is being iffy on whether to sign him LT at the suggested prices.

I still have no clue where those pieces are going to come from with the assets they currently have. Would be great if we could flip Chytil, Kudryavtsev, and a 1st next year to find one of those
$8m for Boeser is way too much. The Red Wings just signed Lucas Raymond for $8m (x8). That guy is twice as good as Boeser.

Fine with it. We’re not in a position to be hoarding draft picks.

Would have preferred it to be for a younger player with more years of team control, though.

This is what I'm struggling with. I knew it was going to get spent but I thought it would have been like the Hronek trade. Didn't expect them to use it to get rid of two bad contracts with term and add two UFAs.

We don't understand because we haven't seen the extension please god let there be one, and any corresponding moves to add to the top 6. I honestly think Boeser is gone, I can't see Rutherford signing a slow player long term.

Well they must feel fairly certain about being able to sign him, and after struggling to bring in an impact defenseman in the offseason didn't want to take their chances on the open market with the cap headed where it is.

If they don't re-sign him it'll be the 2nd season in a row they've thrown away a 1st though..

Ruthervin effed up with the off season signings, and has made decent moves to fix it before the TDL.

Benning would have extended Desharnais and Heinen for several years and sat on the locker room cancer just as long if not longer.

Sure miss "Demko" Demko. Polyplatosaurus suxks when your vezina caliber goalie gets it

I think a lot of posters here genuinely got excited feeling were finally, finally in for the tank. I also get it, because if we'd done it properly, we'd be laughing to the bank with Petey, Hughes, etc. But such is life as a Canucks fan.

I agree, the return hinges entirely on whether we resign Pettersson or not. Best to do that ASAP, and hopefully it's for palatable $/term.

Anyone thinking we were going to tank was fool themselves. Especially if they thought Hughes would be apart of it.

I'm fine with them waiting until after the trade deadline just to see how he fits in. Otherwise, I'd like a contract done well before the playoffs. Regardless if we make it or not.

With the cap cleared they have just under 26m in capspace for the offseason. Extending Marcus is doable and paramount. He's under 30 and there's just not enough good defensemen to go around anymore.

Plus Willander will need a veteran d-partner.

Those opportunities don’t come up often I guess.

They don't and I understand management's apprehension at waiting for that opportunity to come around when they are trying to salvage the season and get things back on track. It's just not what I expected that's left me a little shell shocked.

That's really the crux of it. If you can get Pettersson signed to a good contract then it's worth it.

This trade isn't a straight 1st for Pettersson & O'Connor. It's also a salary dump of 4.25m in cap for this season, next season, and 2.25m for the season afterwards, two players familiar with management, and negotiating rights to those players. It's a little harder to evaluate than most trades like this. I would have expected Pettersson to get a 1st, although a late 1st (which this may ultimately become anyway), on his own. Given that expectation, getting the Penguins to take on bad cap with term and a useful player, even if he's disappointed this season, in O'Connor is a good piece of business.

Someone else said this but I can't find the comment to quote.

But you easily could've done this deal at the beginning of the season (M. Pettersson has been on the trade block all year) by simply including your own 1st round pick.

We struggled in dozens and dozens of games with a horrific D-core, this trade alone would have us sitting in a playoff spot and maybe Pettersson and Miller don't end up in the same situation.

And even if you do end up trading Miller, you wouldn't be doing it from a position of weakness/desperation for a lacklustre return.

I wish it was the Canucks first rounder instead of the Rangers. Oh well.

Happy to get rid of Desharnais and Heinen. They were awful.

Pettersson is a good pickup and rounds out our D nicely, but that offense.... woof

I am not ecstatic about the trades today but they could've been worse.

Allvin is playing NHL 25 right now, and totally mind f**k**g Canuck fans.

Holy crap. Been coaching at a wrestling tournament all day and trying to process the Miller deal. All right all right I guess.

Not sure the dmem we acquired today do much to help our transition game, but no one can say stuff didn't happen today, so there's always that.

I get the feeling that rental defencemen are going to go for an all time premium at the deadline. There is such a shortage and teams are going to want them not only for the playoffs, but also to get the first crack at signing them. You really don't want to be in a bidding war in free agency this offseason.

If Pettersson doesn't sign I wouldn't be surprised if they can extract a 2nd round pick before free agency for his rights.
