That’s the potential game changer right there. Now whether it’s via trade or FA this summer is the question.
Canucks are suddenly in a REALLY good cap position for the offseason, even with the OEL buyout on the books.

27m in cap space, no bad long term deals to contend with (depending on how you see Petterseson) This is the most flexibility this team's had as far as I can remember.

No one bats 1.000 but this management misses more on UFAs than hits. Lankinen/Sherwood good, Heinen/Desharnais/Mikheyev bad, DeBrusk - ??
Cole - good
Soucey - mixed
Debrusk - probably good considering cap is going up like crazy
Sherwood - yes
Lankinen - yes
Heinen - ass
Mik - ACL changes things
Kuz - mix
Desharnais- f*** off
Bluegar - good
Suter - good

I think this is us paying a fair price for a solid player in a position of need. Not really a win or a loss, just a purchase.

I like us getting this done before the deadline too. The wildcard battle in the East is crazy this year and it isn't hard to envision it being a seller's year this year.

Jesus christ so many bad, defeatist, victim complex takes in here, surprising honestly.

Keeping Miller until summer was obv not an option.
Keeping the 1st and stockpiling assets for 17 yr olds was never an option.

Adding a top pairing defenseman they're going to sign and alot more speed & rush offense is exactly what was needed, and most have been clamoring for.

The team is unquestionably better now relative to less than eight hours ago, while ditching five million in trash, and still have cap space & assets for additions.

Who is going to score goals?

I mean, they have most definitely have already talked to the agent before the trade went down. I doubt this is just a rental.

We have the cap space to make a reasonable offer plus multiple Swedes in the room, Allvin in the GM's seat, and the Sedins on the coaching staff. Really hard to imagine an extension doesn't get done.

Shorthouse: "Well, thankfully, I'll only have to suffer two Pettersson's in one game. Shouldn't be that hard, and cause much of a confusing tongue twisting mix up."

We should be able to make a serious run at Rantanen and still have enough room to re-sign Boeser, Pettersson, and Lankinen. We'll have to spend it somehow to keep Hughes happy so why not?

Digesting this.

O’Connor and Pettersson are both solid players. They’re also both pending UFAs.

If they’ve done their homework, got permission to talk to Pettersson‘s agent, and a 4-5 year extension at reasonable $ is incoming, fair enough.

If we don’t sign these guys, don’t make the playoffs, and then they walk … it’s a debacle.

Clearing a couple contracts for non-contributors is a plus.

Now we see what happens with Boeser. I guess all signs point to a trade but if they move him how are they going to score?

Lekkerimaki has a great shot but doesn't have the strength/boardwork/forechecking ability exc. to replace him. And I don't know if there are any real options in FA.

I think they should try to re-sign Brock.

I just don't see how you can look at our forward group and think it's playoff caliber. But I like your positive outlook on the matter and gonna wait and see how this team performs. I'm just really not thrilled from an early viewpoint.
