Geniunely don't understand how people think this is a bad deal for VAN? Along with the Miller trade, they cleared a bit of cap off their books after this year, upgraded their top 4 and got a guy to play on the 4th line.

They now have more flexibility to re-sign Pettersson and/or make additional moves in the summer.
What’s the likelihood Pettersson would have been available during the tampering period for a 3rd? If they lose him in UFA it doesn’t help extend Hughes anyway, they’re not a cup contender, should be more concerned about next year, and traded a mid first for a rental.

We needed to appease our original Elias Pettersson (EP40), since there was a publicized rift between him and Miller (and JT was rumored to have pissed off most people he's played with, e.g. why Horvat got dealt to NYI). Management made the decision to trade Miller, and getting (and re-signing) MPetey, Chytil who's a middle-6 C with upside and freeing up cap by dumping Heinen and Desharnais so they can hunt for a 2C seems like necessary business to solve 2 problems (top-4 D and remove a locker room cancer). I'm taking a cautiously optimistic approach.
I think the trades that happened yesterday could work out well for Vancouver long term but the jury is out and the fact of the matter is that Miller ahd to go and he would only go to one team so the Canucks had to cut their losses and move on.

Hopefully Chytil does his best Kakko impersonation with the Canucks but getting Petterson on the back end is huge for the canucks in solidifying it.

Just seeing this as a Pens fan.

Like getting a first and getting rid of guys for value that weren’t in the long term outlook.

Although it is hard to even foresee who will be on this team 3-4 years from now… So that first becomes all the more valuable to get back.

Did the Devils rebuild last year? Sometimes you have a down year and need to recalibrate, Canucks always desperate and exhaust assets.

The Devils already had Jack signed long term and had already drafted Luke.

Quinn is a year and a half from free agency and the massive cap increases means 32 teams will be able to offer a huge deal.

Canucks have to contend to keep Quinn, if he wants to walk anyways you trade him to the highest bidder at the deadline with max retention and recooperate any lost value.

Friedman said he was open to most US teams, at first he wanted East Coast but then opened up to West Coast ones as well, as long as they were well run organizations or had strong rosters.

And how often has this board mocked Friedman for supposedly knowing nothing about the Canucks? Now he suddenly does? Regardless, what Miller says publicly and what he's told management can be two very different things.

You're also assuming the offers from other teams weren't also lowballs. We know Carolina was bargain hunting when it came to Miller as it was outright reported they were. Colorado was absolutely dumping Mittelstadt on us.

It's wishful thinking we'd somehow pull out a miracle when the whole league knew our situation.

Canucks trading a 1st for a UFA doesn’t make any sense unless there is an agreed upon extension already in place.

Canucks with arguably a Top 5 defence in the NHL now, going to be a lot of 2-1 grind em out type games lol ‬

We went from bottom 10 to top 5 with one trade ?

If Pettersson isn't extended this trade is hilariously bad.

Remove 4 mil in cap (space for M. Pettersson extension) and add a legit top four, puck moving D. Likely had this trade lined up and needed the Rangers’ first to get it done.
Hughes, Hronek
M. Pettersson, Myers
Good top four, and slots Soucy, Forbert into a bottom pairing (pk) role, where they are best suited.

Defence was always good - when healthy. Riddled with injuries this season, someone was always out (having Hronek out for so long Hurt).

Scoring was more of an issue before the Miller trade, now it’s going to be an even bigger problem.

Cap is king in a capped league. Even if Van doesn’t re-sign M. Pettersson (imo they will though) they created cap space for July 1.

Van should try to flip DOC to some team that just sees he’s 6’3 and hasn’t realized he sucks ass.

Miller wasn’t scoring this season. Getting older. Might be a natural decline, or other factors? I think he gets a bump for the remainder of this season, but going forward he will be more of a situational (pp, d-zone starts) kind of guy.

Desharnais, Forbert, Brannstrom, Juulsen are all terrible, Myers and Soucy are often terrible. Quinn is all world and Hronek is ok. That is not a good defense. We couldn't hold a lead if our life depended on it this season.

I am excited to see if Pettersson can help though. Def not thinking this defense is good though. It just doesn't create offensive when Quinn isn't on the ice.

This was a nice get for Vancouver. Petterson will fit in great with Hronek and Hughes.

Also, does this mean the difference between Filip Kral and the NHL is now VD? Call his ass up!

Hit a nerve uh? Crosby staying with the joke that is the current edition of the Pens is actively hurting his legacy. If he stays he doesn't finish his career strong and just racks up a couple of meaningless 70-80 pts yrs on a team trying desperately to delay the rebuild with 0 assets whatsoever.

Horrible take. Part of Crosby's legacy is playing for one team his whole career. He ain't going to be traded or ask to be traded.

Hughes is a Superstar
Hronek is Excellent
Myers is a good defender
Soucy is a good defender
Forbort is below average
The rest are terrible

The problems came whenever there was an injury and Dmen had to step up and play more minutes then they should’ve. Adding M. Pettersson really solidifies the D core.
