Can a Canucks fan explain why I'm seeing so many comments celebrating getting rid of the bad Desharnais and Heinen contracts and paying a premium to do so? It doesn't look like they really need to shed cap. If they were both buried, they'd be under $2M combined, and the team looks to have a substantial amount of room. What am I missing?
Term.

Why are Canucks doing this? Someone smarter than me please explain.

If they're going for it, why trade away JT Miller? If they're not going for it, why trade away a first round pick?

Both Hughes and Elias Pettersson were sick of Miller's bad attitude.

The team's #1 goal is to stay competitive enough for Hughes to want to stay, if Hughes re-signs then they can deal with any issues later, but attempting a re-tool while the best defenseman in the league is 2 seasons away from UFA is not a good idea, so the team can't afford to just sell.

It seems like no team in the league had a #2C and a top 4 (I would argue top pairing) D for trade together who was interested in Miller, so the deal ended up being a pseudo 3 way deal, where Pittsburgh got New York's pick and the Canucks got a top pairing RHD and a mid 6 C.

The proposed offer from the Sabres was Cozens + one of their D for Pettersson, this is likely as close as you get while moving Miller but keeping Pettersson.

VAN needs to make noise the next 2 years before Hughes leaves. Writing is on the wall, playoff success could make a difference though.

Do people really think the Rangers will suck next year? They have too much talent over there. That pick will prob be a mid to late 1st.
McAvoy was a 16 th overall pick. Mid round 1st picks could be lethal. List is long of how many studs get picked there. I dont like this move for nucks. I love the chytll pickup though hes gonna be solid.

Miller had to be traded. Some bad stuff went down behind the scenes. Wasn’t salvageable.

Can’t not go for it or they risk losing Hughes in a couple years. Still might lose him but they gotta try still.

More misses than hits. You want to keep Hughes you trade for players. You wanna lose Hughes you stockpile picks.

not a Canucks fan but your missing that they also received Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor... it's more than a cap dump trade

I'm not missing that at all. It's even in the thread title. But they paid a high price for rentals, considering they may well be a worse trade after the team and are sitting outside of the playoffs.

And as I said, it seems like a few people are cheering dumping the contracts - so my question remains: Did those contracts actually need to be dumped given the team's cap situation this year and next?

He really wanted the Canucks NOT to trade the 1st round pick they got in the Miller trade. Sorry Shannon.

I respect the boldness of Vancouver here. There's a chance it could backfire in a big way since they're a borderline playoff team as is, and the two incoming players are upcoming UFAs. But it's definitely an upgrade to the roster and I like that they're not throwing in the towel.

On the flip side, pretty nice haul for Pittsburgh. Dubas has taken heat but they have compiled quite a few picks.

Edit-Rangers pick makes it slightly less risky.
