Confirmed with Link: [VAN/NYR] JT Miller, Erik Brannstrom, & Jackson Dorrington for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and 1st 2025 (Top-13 Protected, Unprotected after)

With the benefit of hindsight, I don't think Miller really wanted to be in Vancouver. Everybody denies it, but I don't know what other conclusion you can draw.

Sportsnet saying that one of the reasons for Miller's absence a month or so ago, was him taking time to decide if he really wanted to stay in Vancouver. So doesn't surprise me that the narrative didn't change even after he returned.

Mancini sounds like a late developing, big, physical, mobile, defensive RHD, and he could be a nice add. After Willander the right side was lacking for young depth. Here's some more info:

From the last article:

Mancini’s Emergence Has Beefed up Defense

The Rangers’ young 2024-25 upside isn’t limited to the forwards. No story that came out of camp was bigger than the eye-opening effort of Victor Mancini, the 6-3, 215-pound right-shot defenseman who looked to have caught the organization’s attention as part of the future, then did more than enough to end up on the opening-night roster with the injury to Ryan Lindgren, and now might just stay even after Lindgren returns, which is expected to be soon.

Mancini, a 2022 fifth-round pick out of Nebraska-Omaha, got the nod for Lindgren’s spot despite forcing fellow righty Braden Schneider to move to the left side, the 22-year-old being just too impressive to not make the team. With Schneider handling his off side well for now, it’s possible Lindgren’s return will come on the third pair, bumping another rising youngster, Zac Jones, to the press box. Jones has looked good as well in the first three games after taking a leap last season in 31 contests, but the Rangers’ depth of personnel might force strong options such as Jones out of the lineup – the kind of problem every coach wants to have.

With Mancini in the mix, the Blueshirts’ defense is bigger and tougher, something that has become a necessity for success in the NHL playoffs nowadays, and, as mentioned earlier, has been lacking in recent years for the Rangers. Whether Mancini stays in for the long haul or not, he and Jones, the speedy offensive-minded blueliner, have fortified a deep pool of defensive options for Laviolette that will surely be needed for the Blueshirts to make another run at the Stanley Cup.

exactly what I was thinking. We came out with a 1st rounder, a pretty decent prospect, right shot dman, and a roster player, whois scored 20+ in the past while averaging 13 minutes, we also dump 8 million dollar contract.
It's too bad that Chytil is also not good at faceoffs. You make a good point about RHS. That's something we need.

If I'm reading the standings right, if the season ended today the Canucks would own the Rangers' unprotected 2026 first.
Correct.

Perhaps we deal our own 1st for a top 4 LHS and keep that pick in our back pocket.

It's strange, I don't really have a take. I'm sympathetic to the "we traded our 100 point matchup C, our window is slammed shut", but I also get the "the Canucks just added flexibility and draft capital". I'm not a Chytil fan, but it's not unheard of for guys to get past concussion issues and stay healthy.

I'm gonna miss Miller, and also, I'm mad at him that it came to this.

Lots of feelings.

Ignoring Lindholms poor fit with Boston but I find it hilarious we waited until this season to trade JT when we could have last year and potentially used Lindholm to fill his spot. Just another strike against management how narrow minded they are and more proof this Miller locker room cancer is so blown out of proportion. If it was so bad they obviously would have known about it last year and could have acted with more leverage. Just completely butchered this while situation. Joke of a franchise as always.
Getting rid of Miller just to sign Lindholm to a complete albatross of a contract would be a even bigger disaster

I really didn't see the situation as a "things are getting worse with every passing day" type situation.

We were winning games. Miller was producing.

The way you present it is that removing Miller immediately improves things by subtracting a negative.

Long-term, something needed to change, but I don't see how trading Miller for a lacklustre return made things better for the team right now.

I think you easily could've waited for a better return.

We're about to find out real soon though.
Oh really, from outside of the organization and locker room you didn't think this was a big deal and that it could wait, even though the president of the team said publicly that the situation was untenable.

But ya, just wait a bit longer and let it fester more, until more players want out, until more players have time outs, until more losing occurs, until more irreparable damage is done.

They already waited too long. Some unreal takes here.

That's only if you think Miller's value in the league is different from what the fan thinks his value is.

Clearly his value across the league is low.

Teams like Miller. Teams really like Miller.

But they also absolutely hate their contract and they hate the fact that they have to gamble on whether or not 23/24 Miller shows up or if 22/23 Miller shows up.

He's a good, but inconsistent player who's entering his twilight years and is on a bad contract. Plus he has a NMC. All that drops his value significantly versus his output.

Teams aren't lining up to offer their best trade chips for Miller the exact same reason no one's lining up to offer a haul for Zibanjed.

I don't think Miller's value in the league is low per se. I think it is simply difficult to pull off a deal for a big name C. Unfortunately, we really don't have much examples these days. Eichel was kind of damaged goods and his return wasn't some huge ransom like Quebec trading Lindros. Even the recent Rantanen for Necas + deal isn't some great return as Rantanen is clearly the better player and only 2 years apart in age and contract expiration.

In comparison, we traded Horvat for a top 12 protected 1st when the Islanders were ~ where the Ranger are in the standings (Rangers are slightly lower). Assuming Chytil doesn't have negative value he is certainly better than Beauvillier who was very much a cap dump. Mancini and Raty value wise is a bit of a wash.

I do think that these days that mid 1st round pick is a significant asset however disappointed I am in the return (Chytil being the target especially).

I know we'll probably end up trading Rangers' 1st before the year is done, but I think the best course is to hope the Rangers miss the playoffs and then have a really terrible season the following year.

This is why the NHL needs to get rid of guaranteed contracts too many Loui Erikssons floating around on long term deals ruins the quality of the product. The NHLPA would never agree though.
Agreed. the NHLPA would balk at fixing this, but it should be a priority. There should be a way to walk away from a bad contract that doesn't cripple a team. Of course, smart GM wouldnt sign the FFing things in the first place. Sadly, those are lacking.

At the same time there's no onus on the player to live up to the contract. But yes stupid GM's helped create this problem and the Salary Cap has just made it that much more glaring.

Not sure if you guys watched it but on SN Central they had that Hockey Group guy on and he basically said the Canucks had a better deal with Carolina in place but got greedy and Carolina went for Rantanen instead.

I wonder if it still would’ve been Miller or if it would’ve been Peterson instead.

Miller Trade
  • Retention is what prevented the first trade to the Rangers from happening
  • Original trade was Chytil, 1st rounder, and a defensive prospect but can’t confirm if it was Mancini
  • Rangers wanted the Canucks to retain and Canucks were not willing to do that
  • Always believed that the Rangers were the most likely outcome
  • When the Rangers told the Canucks that retention was no longer an issue, the trade was finished and Miller waived his NMC
Carolina Hurricanes
  • Were more interested in Pettersson than Miller
  • Looked at Pettersson but ultimately chose Rantanen
  • Doesn’t know if Miller was anywhere close to being traded to Carolina
Other Suitors
  • There were some teams that were looking at Miller but never got the sense that it was anywhere near as serious than it was with the Rangers
  • Miller preferred to go to the Eastern USA; over the last couple of days expanded that to good teams in good situations; didn’t want to play anywhere else in Canada
