Confirmed with Link: [VAN/NYR] JT Miller, Erik Brannstrom, & Jackson Dorrington for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and 1st 2025 (Top-13 Protected, Unprotected after)

Even though he just got 103 points?

I get that he has a history of being a known malcontent, but he still put up those numbers. They still re-signed him knowing what he was. They viewed it as valuable. How come that view wasn't shared by the Buyers? Why do it now when the 4 Nations and the TDL was around the corner? They didn't have to.

Horvat is the better player.

Yes. Even though. This particular situation goes way beyond the ice. I think that's what some people are having a hard time realizing when they look at it. The players aren't robots. They are humans who are effected by toxic work environments just like most of us are. Maybe even more so. The fact that Van just moved out a 100pt player while fighting for a playoff spot should be all the evidence we need. Miller isn't a good teammate. This has been his MO at every other location. He rubs people the wrong way and it effects everyone around. He's also soon to be 32 and lets not pretend his contract will age well.

This was the very definition of addition by subtraction. The fact we walk away with a 1st while shedding the player and his contract is pretty impressive. Nobody will ever be able to convince me otherwise.

Like some have said, you were never going to get true value for Miller. If you are thinking short term this is an obvious failure of a trade. But it does make some sense if you are thinking long term.
I could tolerate it if we were headed into a certain retool/rebuild.

We all fully know that pick along with other assets are being traded to salvage this deadbeat group.

Nope, there are more centers I'd take over Horvat than RHD I'd take over Hronek.

If you are thinking long term, you keep Miller until the offseason and trade him for a better futures-orientated return.

What the Canucks did today is exactly what the Bonino, Sbisa and late 1st for Kesler trade was.

A team trying to "re-tool" and ending up failing to get present or future value for their asset.
... I hate this situation and the trade (until we see what else happens), but the present (Chytil) and future (1st rounder) assets are pretty obvious in this trade.

Typically I would be extremely pessimistic and conservative about the Canucks chance to sign a marquee UFA. Most often I don’t even think they should.

But—I do think Vancouver has a chance to convince a Marner or Rantanen for the opportunity to play with Quinn Hughes. They may have the cap space to sweeten the contract to the degree necessary to do it, too.
Yeah we got the cap to do a bunch of stuff now. I am more curious who we will acquire with our 2 1st rounder

This whole ordeal has burnt whatever faith I had in management after last year. We had two of the elite centres in the game and management and coach allowed petty f***ing bullshit to cause this. Absolute f***ing joke that this is the best they could come up with, just keep him and f***ing sort this bullshit out.

We arent getting Byram or an impact player for a non lottery protected 1st rounder. This closes our window. Demko is done. Boeser is gone.

In some ways trade has the scent, some would say odor, of a rebuild.

Get a fill-in at center who has couple of years on his contract. Hopefully increases value here and can be tradeable if the team wants to fully rebuild. If he sucks can be jettionsoned fairly quickly.

Get the first and you think, at a guess, that will be somewhere b/w 20 and 25. Rangers will make the playoffs it seems. Drafting here is crucial if they don't move the pick.

Get a youngish right shot d-man with size who might develop.

Get some cap space

Get rid of a contract that, long term, was going to dimish exponientally (although it means they lost the best player in the deal but Miller fragile mental state has to be considered)

Get something for a player that might not be being willing to sign here. (but did give up in Dorrington an interesting propects given his toughness)

Get rid of player who did not figure into the future (but too bad for Abby) and turned a waiver pick up into something.

Would probably be a great idea if Hughes wasn't due up soon. That pick is getting traded for help immediately I would guess. Can't take a massive step back if you want Hughes to commit next summer

The 1st rounder is the main return in this trade but it could easily be a mid pick.

Chytil is a 3rd line center. A massive downgrade from Miller. So I don't see the present value at all.

We'll be lucky if he ends up better than Pius Suter.

Honestly would much rather have Kappo. Somehow Seattle managed to get almost as much value as we did for a significantly worse player in Borgen.

The cap space and removing an apparent major issue in the locker room is a big part of the return as well.

actual thoughts:

- the rangers are currently in 22nd. if the season ended today, that pick is most likely 10th overall - so it flips to next season, unprotected. that is not a minor/nothing asset.
- of course, gotta think the rangers make a good push here with jt, but it's still probably a top-15 to 20 pick, very similar to the isles pick for horvat.
- chytil - is what it is with his health. really hope that he can stay on the ice, but at the very least he is a good player to fill in for the short term. not banking on him as a long term piece.
- don't know anything about mancini, but sounds like he's close to the nhl, and maybe tocchet will actually use him unlike brannstrom
- sucks that it came to this with miller, but making the move is the right call vs waiting. there's no rebounding value here - he could go on a tear and be back at a 100 point pace and teams still might not trade for him. we have been here before. almost for three years.
- this could've gotten worse. we're lucky jt is still playing at a high level, but he's 6 weeks from turning 32, signed for 5 more years - if he loses a step or two and becomes a 40-50 point guy, no one is touching this contract on waivers. we're lucky the rangers imploded this year and drury probably needed to do this to make the playoffs and keep his job
- said this in the "what do you do with miller/ep" thread, but it's time for petey to nut up or shut up. he's on the clock now, and it's time to assess the rest of the core for what it is. the distraction is gone.
- did this get done now specifically with the cap figures more clear? jt's cap hit definitely becomes more palatable; but for the canucks, getting that money off the books with no retention is massive.
- or was it always going to be friday at 4pm? hahah @Vector has always said, friday or sunday

Boy, the worst of the two 1st rounders they now have must be burning a hole in PA and JR's pocket. Maybe they have a deal already cooked?

Still not convinced EP40 is here by the time his NM kicks in.

kesler had a NMC and demanded anaheim, just like miller demanded new york.

you guys with ur revisionist history here is hilarious

Really not the same thing because you've cut the field of able Dmen.

Put another way: I would take a placeholder RHD over Hronek if it meant I could keep Horvat. Someone like Carrier would have been just fine.
