Confirmed with Link: [VAN/NYR] Canucks acquire SJS 3rd round Pick in 2025 for D Carson Soucy (no retention)

I'm okay with the return. Was hoping for better but San Jose's pick will be #66 or 67.

Can't help but think they would have been better off waiting until the off-season to move him.

His NTC would have become a 12 team no-trade list and a lot more teams could afford him with the rise in salary cap.
Probably not. Defensive Dmen like Soucy tend to have their highest value at the trade deadline (although he isn't a pending UFA). Draft picks at the draft tend to have their highest value. If we hold onto SJ's 3rd and trade it at the draft we could pick up a solid young prospect, a slightly overpriced vet on a short term contract or pick up a 5th trading down a few spots.

Soucy was really, really bad this season. Maybe the Canucks could have waited until the offseason, but why take a risk he gets injured? Hughes will be back at some point, and people seem convinced that Willander will be on the roster as well. Sitting in the box would do nothing to raise his value.

Gonna be interesting deadline this year with all the cap space we have. We have a plethora of options available to facilitate for others and gain assets. Sell assets or made a deal for a long term piece. Gonna be exciting 24 hours. A 3rd for Soucy is great for me as opens up slot for D EP as well.
Good post! A extra thumbs up for the use of a plethora!

...
But in all probably--Allvin includes it in another deal for somebody.
65+ overall is a crapshoot at best
I'm looking at this as a pure salary dump. With the cap going to unreasonably high levels the next three years we should be able to extend Boeser.
Would love to reunite with Bo as the Islanders are having a fire sale and he's never produced like he did here.

Nucks are clearing room for more additions this offseason. That much is clear.

Suter is likely gone and Brock is the big question.

Soucy, thanks for the big crosscheck! Good to make room for Mancini and EP25.

Can't see them getting much more... Bird in the hand... I like the deal.

So we lost NHL defensive depth for some minor short term cap savings. The lineup just got more AHLie

Soucy was literally the 5LD right now behind Hughes/MPettersson/Forbort/EP2 and they cleared him for a pretty significantly positive asset (barely different from a 2nd from a contender) and cleared a pile of cap space.

Again: EP2 basically took Soucy’s job.

I was listening to a podcast and I think it might have been Ferraro (could be wrong about that though) and he was talking about Soucy’s decline this last season and brought up something I’d never considered before:

It is fairly common for fathers of newborns to struggle (apparently the situation Soucy is in).

I’d never considered that before, but as someone who has brought home a newborn, it can (and often does) kick your career in the ass (at least for a short time).

I thought Soucy was a really nice addition last season, and a big part of why this team took a step forward last season. His play this season was extremely disappointing though.

New dad or not, you have to figure that shit out and show up ready to play your best hockey.

When you're making 3.25M a year, you pony up for a night nanny.

Seems fine, but given what Dumoulin returned also seems underwhelming. Not sure why the rush to do this but they’ve been trying to move Soucy off for a while.

Sounds like they’re potentially saving the retention slot for Boeser.

I’ve talked about this all year and expect that it’s probably the main reason for his poor year. His skating fell off a cliff to start the year, he didn’t look in shape, and he never really recovered.
