Why do Canucks dump Edler for a late first? They could easily find a better deal at the deadline

To Canucks: Andrei Markov, 2017 1st round pick and Charles Hudon/Daniel Carr.

To Montreal: Alex Edler

To Montreal: Nazem Kadri

To Toronto: Nikita Scherbak, David Desharnais, 2017 2nd round pick and 2018 2nd round pick.

Thoughts? Markov & DD are both there for cap purposes a la O. Jokinen/Brooks Laich. Both are UFAs at the end of the year so the teams don't commit to their contracts beyond this season.

Dont know much about Huddon or Carr they good? If there ok its not too bad a deal but i doubt Markov would wanna come from montreal which has been the suprise story of the season so far even tho its unsustainable to Vancity a league known dumpster fire

Habs dont touch Kadri without any contract going back. Easy pass. Markov + picks + prospects is way too much for Edler imo.

I'll take markov over edler, so thats a no with all the ads anyway. And Toronto probably says no to Kadri

Assuming this is a later season trade, the Habs would have no cap issues fitting in Edler, so no need to include Markov (I see that as basically a straight up trade now, Edler is not the player he was 3 years ago). Plus he has a 12 team NTC and VAN may be on it for all we know.

Yeah. Markov as part of an Edler trade doesn't really make much sense for either team.

Canucks don't need Markov. Does nothing for them...and since he's actually still a quality player, it'd just eat into the return in futures pieces they'd actually want in any sort of Edler deal. It'd be a hassle trying to flip Markov somewhere else for picks/prospects...when Montreal already has the sort of other pieces that would be far more attractive in the first place. Keep it simple.

And for Montreal, dealing Markov for Edler would make the move a lot more lateral, for no good reason. Especially if Markov ended up flipped back to another Eastern Conference contender.

Makes far more sense on both ends to work any potential Edler deal without including Markov. If it happens later in the year, the salary situation gets a lot easier to shoehorn in there without such a significant cap dump/cap offset coming back. And realistically...an Edler deal isn't happening until later anyway, when the Canucks are clearly out of the playoff hunt (if an Edler deal is going to happen at all - he may well exercise his NTC).

By Christmas time or later...the Habs could probably squeeze Edler's $5M in there with only a bit of salary coming back the other way. Beaulieu's $1M would probably do the trick and might make a lot of sense - as an RFA, his salary will surely be going up quite a bit next year anyway, in addition to requiring expansion protection Habs won't have available (Weber, Petry, Edler would likely be the guys, no?).

Or at the deadline, you might even be able to work a pure futures/prospects/picks type package and still squeeze Edler's money in there with some creative accounting. Though Edler if he moves, would surely fetch more than just a likely very late 1st and a good but not great prospect. He's a top-pairing defenceman with two more years on a very good value $5M contract.

Why do we want Kadri? He is not significantly better than DD. He is younger than DD, but is not worth giving up Scherbak and 2 2nd rounders along with DD. Seriously, if DD is overpaid at 3.5 million (final year of the contract) why the Heck would we want a guy who produces at the same level at DD for 1 million more??? People on this site do not seem to know much about the players involved in these phantom trade talks.

By the way, DD has played 226 games in the last 3 seasons and produced 129 points, while Kadri has played 227 games and produced 134 points. For 1 million more per season. Yes, Kadri is way more physical, and is younger. I get that. However, he is not going to bring enough to our team to make him worth DD, Scherbak and 2 2nd round picks. There would be other players I would target with those kinds of assets over Kadri.

Fair enough, other than Matthews, are players like Nylander & Marner still expected to be used at center going forward or they'll remain on the wing? What I had in mind was that the Leafs would trade Kadri to make room in the top 6 at center.

Leafs likely will aim to run three scoring lines in the long term - so Kadri fits in there.

The only way i could see them moving him at the moment is in a deal for a defensemen

Pass. Behind the 3 of Matthews, Nylander, and Kadri the Leafs don't have great center prospects who can fill that void if we trade Kadri(Bozak isn't here long term IMO). I think we want to run a top 9 instead of top 6/bottom 6 style so having 3 quality centers will be essential. Not gonna trade that for a winger prospect which we're loaded with, and couple 2nd's.

So you don't like Bozak????? you sound like those fans who predicted Bozak's demise years ago but like it or not Bozak's still here

I, as a Habs fan, would do the Kadri trade in a heartbeat.
The picks would hurt, but I'd still do it.

Don't know for the Edler one. I'd have to think about it.

Bozak's likely theloser in terms of the numbers game and age. Lots of competition coming up for those top 9 spots and he's heading north of 30. And management just locked up Kadri long term

you sound like one of those people who judge people on things they don't even say.

I like Bozak. I was happy when we resigned him, and he's done well in his time here playing in spots above his head(1C role). He's 30, he'll be 32 by the time his contract runs out and realistically he's the 4th best center on this roster. He's not a long term piece unless you love handing out contracts to players to are past their prime. I figured people would have learned from that by now.

No interest in Edler, Kadri would be a good fit for us as a 2C tho.

Radulov - Galchenyuk - Gallagher (o-zone starts)
Pacioretty - Kadri - Shaw (o-zone starts)
Lehkonen - Plekanec - Byron (d-zone starts)
Danault - Mitchell - Flynn/Carr (d-zone starts)
