It's the offseason, patiently waiting for NFL season :D

To be fair, most Oilers fans figured Arvidsson and especially Skinner meant that Henrique was gone. The Perry cap hit isn't limiting them from any additions.

On topic, Desharnais was a fan favourite, a big D that can clear the crease but he had lost his spot by the end of the playoffs to the more talented, higher upside and much quicker Broberg. Vinny has his spot on the bottom pairing of most teams' D corps and would have been welcomed back as a 6/7 but he priced himself off the team (he would have kept them from signing some of the forwards they signed today).

I think he could do really well with the Canucks, but wouldn't expect him to really be any better than he was on the Oilers. Guess we'll see

As much as the offseason or free agency day has been, there's been way too much activity.
Ah well, got nothing else but to enjoy the sun.

The guy may be a pylon, but he’s our pylon now hahaha

Joking aside the pro scouting department probably liked aspects of his game seen in the playoffs and foresee him providing value in the right role and developed with our coaching team.

They’ve had more hits than misses of late will see how this goes.

Calm down everyone, It's July 1. Canucks have lots of cap space and plenty of time to add a puck mover to this D core.
no they dont. unless they move a garland/hoglander. they have at least 1mill. without silovs signed.

It's amazing how many people still don't understand the basics of how the cap works. Yes capfriendly says 2 million, but there are some things to consider:

1. They have 24 players on the roster - so that right there is adds another 800k-1 million depending on who you send down, so it's more like 2.8-3 million
2. If you ADD another player, well you'll need to take someone else off, adding another 800k to 1 million.
3. You don't have to have a 23 man roster going into the season. Many teams go with 22 or 21. That could free up even more space.

Conceivably, the Canucks could add a 6 million dollar player and still be cap compliant on day 1. I doubt they'd want to do that, but adding a 3-4 million dollar player could be done relatively painlessly.
plus the offseason teams can go 10 percent over the cap until the first game of the regular season starts then they have to be cap complaint. weather thats dressing a 21 man roster or 22.

Anyone with insight on how the 2 million 2 way deal works? Can you send him down and take the entirety of the cap off the books?

My understand is he can be sent down and make his full salary but it wouldn’t count against the NHL cap?

It's the same for any player I believe - you send them down and the only cap space you get is the league minimum, the rest counts on your cap. So if we were to send him down we'd save just over 1 million in cap.

Two-way just has to do with the salary he gets paid in the AHL, but it's confusing in this case as CapFriendly has his minor league salary equal to his NHL salary (unless they just don't have the details on it yet because it's a fresh signing).

Fair points but I think and Alvin backed this up that Foote and Gonchar saw that his flaws were correctable with their tutelage.

The work they did with Juulson, Quinn and especially Myers, definitely gives them some clout.

You would know more but keeping Broberg in had roots in the fact that you don't change the lineup after a win.

I mean Broberg was by no means bad but he wasn't a revelation that one would point to and say ' that's the reason we won 3 in a row'

I do agree that having Broberg allowed them to save cap towards forwards but I don't think he's better and wasn't Vinny inserted in the lineup fulltime right around when they had much improved defensive results?

I was thinking it'd be better for Nucks today. Such a great turnaround. Bad injury luck in playoffs but I thought this offseason would be really strong for you guys to build on your great year. Feels more lateral to me. Giant D but not very mobile. Has a 1990s vibe to me... Other than Hughes of course. And first half Hronek.lol

Have to disagree, there's no issue with speed on the backend and as far as this off-season they got a great fit for EP and every forward they signed is a great fit in the system and best of all not one bloated term or AAV

People get so enamoured with name recognition when the reality of it hockey is more about fit and systems and this team is loaded with size, 2 foot players, tons of depth. All while having three guys that can score 40, several ppg guys and a bunch of 20 goal scorers and one of the best goalies in the game.

They are a better team than the one that opened the season and will be an absolute pain to play against.
Alvin has gone out and built a team based on the mantra of the staff and no one line or player needs to set records every year I'm order to win.
Lekkerimakki is a real wild card as well, he's coming off a year that really couldn't have gone much better on a personal level and there's no reason he can't jump right in like many other Swedes with less production have done coming out of the SHL.

I think both our teams seperated themselves from the rest of the Pacific, yet neither team added a Stamkos but neither team needed to because both team already have enough high -end talent and in the nucks case, just swapping out Mikheyev for Debrusk is a big improvement.

What are the odds we have a home and home again to kick off the season? Clearly after this last season the league would be dumb not to foster the rivalry that's been growing, especially with the flames a likely bottom three team this year the battle of Alberta isnt all that appealing.

I don't mind this. He'll be a 6/7. Probably play most games, be used more heavily against big strong teams that try to penetrate the inside and given less playing time against super fast teams who might exploit him.

Really didn't like him as an Oiler and felt like he could be overwhelmed by a good forecheck, but we have fantastic D coaches who must feel they can work with him on that. And his size, strength, and meanness will come in handy.

Did he play much on the Oiler's successful pk during the playoffs? I know he was a healthy scratch as things progressed to the finals.
He is basically a pk specialist. He is great at that. He would look okay for us until the playoffs. He's a bit too slow for playoff hockey. He is great at clearing the front of the net, but not as physical as you would like, and puck moving doesn't really happen for him. I like him. I am glad he got a pay day in, but I am not sold on him being worth 2 million.

Vinny was a fan favorite for sure in Edmonton.. Truly one of the 'good' guys so not a good fit in Vancouver. He is also a late bloomer and could very well take another step ahead and become a solid 2nd pairing Dman. All he has done is improve and was arguably as good as Ceci if not better for long stretches in the season.

They have roughly $3.5 million with Poolman on LTIR and roster adjustments to keep 2 spare players.

Imo this guy remains underrated. The only limiting factor to me is that he is already almost 30 so not sure how much more development/improvement we will see — but as of last year he was still getting better/ getting used to the NHL.
If he continues to improve even a little bit hes going to be very good. He can play against elite opposition.

He was injured in the playoffs one game, and then they put him up with Nurse who was struggling at The time, the very next game. That pairing didnt fare well and then he was out of the lineup. Not sure if it was fair to him.

Also remember that he was very physically imposing in his first season but when the playoffs came around he complained about the atrocious reffing in game 1 and after that every ref called him for even breathing on a guy the rest of the way. He was allowed to own his space in front of the net all season and then suddenly he was getting chintzy penalty after chintzy penalty. He “cleaned up his act” after that, but was less effective in the crease because of it. Other players on other teams get away with the kind of stuff he was doing 365 days a year so maybe now that hes a “veteran” on the Canucks he’ll be able to play with the same rule book as everyone else.

IMHO, an extremely useful player who has upside as he has become more comfortable handling the puck. He’ll never be Erik Karlsson but I can see a world where he helps you instead of hindering you on the puck moving front some day. EASILY worth 2M in my books.

I'd take Zadorov over him but not at 3x the price. Is Zadorov 3x better? I don't think so. Desharnais will help on the PK and I wouldn't be shocked to see him on the #1 PK unit like he was in EDM.

I think I'm the only Oilers fan not happy with our TDL. I won't be happy till I saw a real Top 4 D core and we still don't have that. We always get forwards and 5/6 D to solve our issues.

As far as Nucks.. will be neat to see how they deploy Hronek and Hughes. If they can both carry a pair (obviosuly Hughes can) then it could end up great as they'll both have a giant to play with.

I don't think they're going to add a D and risk losing Juulsen on waivers as I think they like him, so if that's the case their bottom pairing is going to be maybe the least mobile league wide. If they play with a 21 or 22 man roster I guess they'd accrue enough to add like 2 million at the deadline?

Lots of moves can look good on paper but can still turn out bad. Optics for what Oilers did are good, they just need to turn out good

Trade deadline isn’t until like February.

And 2 TDL’s ago we got Ekholm.
