As someone mentioned briefly, what we did today also kinda stirred up a hornet's nest for the TDL, taking away the one of the most highly coveted trade target away, set the price for the other players, accelerating the urgency for other teams, and potentially disrupting the overall vibe of the rest of the market.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but I think this could have some trickle down effects down the line.
Tsn and SN don’t have anything to talk about

Couple of interesting tidbits for LeBrun in this Athletic article.

There were five or six teams with interest in Lindholm, and Boston was one of them. But my sense is the first-place Bruins just couldn’t bring themselves to pay that kind of price, especially given they didn’t have a first-round pick this year (traded last trade deadline for Tyler Bertuzzi). The Flames probably could have gotten Boston’s 2025 first-rounder as part of a package, but even then I think Bruins GM Don Sweeney was still reticent. The B’s have given up a lot of draft capital in the past few years. It doesn’t mean they won’t again, but it just feels like as great a fit Lindholm would have been in Boston, the price was just too high.

The other thing to consider with Calgary is goalie Jacob Markstrom, who turned 34 on Wednesday. He’s got a full no-move clause and completely controls his future. But I do wonder now that his best friend on the team has been traded to Vancouver (which is a bit ironic given that it was Lindholm who helped convince Markstrom to leave the Canucks, spurn the Oilers and sign with the Flames in October 2020), how does he feel about things?

This just makes the deal even sweeter. Suck it, Boston!

While this would have been ideal apparently Calgary's cheap ownership refuses to retain on any player. Reportedly, that's why we got Zadorov for cheap so at least we were able to take advantage of the owner's stupid inflexibility in one instance.

I think traditionally Flames ownership has been reluctant to pay people not to work for them. But they are doing it with Sutter.

But to your point though, retaining on Zadorov probably didn’t/wouldn’t get much more at the time. And they do maintain flexibility to take on salary in addition to keeping their slots.

- Will be interesting to see how the fans react here, when the Canucks lose a couple of games in a row..?...Expectations have now gone to a completely new level....There is a buzz in the city, and we can expect a big crowd at every game, like it was over a decade a go.

- I said from the outset , that it was a fairly big price to pay for a rental (luckily, we had the assets, and could afford it)..It was a good trade for both teams..Calgary did well here, because Conroy said he would never allow an upcoming UFA to walk for nothing.(Gaudreau)...and he was good on his word.

So acquiring Tanev would have cost another 1st and mgmt balked.

I don't blame them.
I have a feeling that there is currently a bigger market out there for Tanev, than there was for Lindholm...Last i heard, was that there were about 10 teams interested.

Will be interesting to see what the butchers bill will be for whomever acquires him.

How many top 4 defenseman are available league wide?

Hell, I even think Myers could fetch a 1st rounder right now.

traditionally we have done better trading quality for quantity so i guess let's see how this plays out.

It would be more than worth it if they could get permission to negotiate a short-term, affordable extension beforehand. And honestly even without it, I feel like it's far more likely Tanev re-signs with the Canucks than Lindholm.

My thoughts, after reading 45 pages, talking to my friend from Calgary, is two fold.

First while we gave up a lot... it wasn't exactly a lot of good... I am completely fine trading everything we did.

While I am not totally sold on the target... I am getting higher and higher on him, especially after speaking to my Calgary buddy. Hopefully it turns out, but you definitely have to try when you get years like this. On paper this is a massive upgrade, lets hope it plays out that way too.

Calgary had Lindholm, Tanev, Hanifin who are all UFAs. All would return a much larger package than Zadarov, thus they opted to keep their retention slots open just in case they needed them. Turns out that they did not for Lindholm by taking back Kuz.
But the reasoning to not retain on Zadorov was sound at the time.

I think it was a brilliant move to leverage Hunter B’s excellent season to get value now. There’s is a chance that he will become a top four offensive D man in the league but it is by no means guaranteed and probably more unlikely than not. He won’t become Adam Fox.
Selling high is a good thing even if the prospect reaches his ceiling.

The Canucks paid a bit extra in this trade because they already have an understanding with Calgary that they will get Tanev as well. The Canucks just need to make a move or two in order to make room for Tanev. It's like they have a deposit on Tanev and will collect him in the next few weeks.

Heard it first here peeps. :)

I really wonder what the producers even do at those places. Like, just do a "Set Roster" special. Outline every team, weaknesses, strengths, injuries, cap situation, etc... Talk about the moves they made during the season.

The trade deadline doesn't only have to be about what trades were made that day. Jesus guys. They make worse quality than youtubers in their basements.
