This sounds exactly like the type of player Rutherford is talking about. Would the Rangers be willing to move Laf for Horvat? Is there another piece I’m missing here?

No. I feel like they remain patient with Laf, as they should and Horvat would be a luxury for the Rangers, not someone they really need.

Do these kind of "retools not rebuild" ever work without a solid core of vets in place already?

MYbe its just me, bjt usually teams that say that end up bottoming and picking in the top 5 a few years in a row anyway

Why would NYR not bridge Laf for cheap ?
He’s 21.
The kid also needs to sign said contract.

I really hope a team OS him just under the 1st rd pick threshold. Thats 4.2 IIRC. That screws up the NYR big time with their other RFAs and their internal cap structure.

A 4.2M 2-3 year deal to make their life really hard until Trouba becomes a UFA

If he's the guy to bring in Horvat though, that changes the balance of power in the east
The Rangers aren't trading for Horvat. They don't need a center and can't afford to re-sign him in any case. And even if we were to trade for him, we aren't giving up our 1st overall pick who had 19 even strength goals last year just because he's struggling this year. He'll either figure it out or he won't but he'll do it as a Ranger.

In fantasy land sure but offer sheets rarely happen

Kakko signed 2x2.5 ish so I would figure the same

Are you suggesting adding Horvat makes the Rags the best team in the East or even the metro?
Settle down.

Laf is a bust, right? So why are these teams suddenly handing out 4.2 million over 2-3 years. If it happens and Laf signs, let him go.. I think we'd be more worried about players like Miller.

Need to get everybody as cheap as possible, esp long term, given cap reality.
Howev, I see Canadian teams itching to offer sheet him if he is not traded to one of their own.
We don't want to overpay LaF, but an offer to low from NY invites a reduced offer sheet.
We should consider trading LaF for first signif = acceptable offer, one recognizing his value is not Jagr-esque, but still like the next Steve Vickers

I welcome a VAN offer but it has to be signif, and principally picks which do not add salary to cap.

LaF not looking good right now, but his skating, while at a snail's pace, is at least NHL par.
That + eye test proves he is productive w/correct linemates, i.e., kid line.

Listen to offers, find a line for him that has chemistry and stop effin CONSTANTLY juggling the lines.
Stay the course, but don't overplay this hand.

I see a larger deal, btw, with the LaF portion of it to be
LaF
for
Pinto + Grieg

busy til w'e
hope to post it then

I’m not saying the Devils are the best. Just to clear that up. But adding Horvat isn’t making the Rags leap frog Carolina or Boston.
I think the poster is just referring to "If you have Boston, Carolina, and Tampa in your top 3 (or whatever your top 3 is), now you have NYR in the conversation with them as potentially coming out of the East. I don't think the poster was calling NYR the best division/east team with Horvat.

I still don’t see it. Horvat is good but he’s in a contract season and Vancouver fans overrate their players big time. Is he that much better then Trocheck (assuming Horvat would be the 2c and Trocheck would drop to the 3rd line)?

Now if the Rags got Petterson that would be different.

It would behoove the Rangers to get his bridge deal signed as soon as possible. They hold as much leverage right now as they’ll ever hold in this contract discussion.

He isn't a 1C but he's definitely better than Trocheck, we definitely over rate our players but your completely underrating Horvat even asking that question.

You’re probably right. I just don’t see Horvat elevating the Rags by any significant margin. I’ve watched them sign and trade for a lot of big name players over the years and most of the time it doesn’t work out.

They might not develop them very well but they do have a solid core of young players. I’m happy to watch them repeat the same mistakes of the past I just don’t think it’s a good idea for them. If they’re going to trade Laf it should be for a sure thing (which is almost impossible)
